To think Alan could just kill the bloody mouse?

Some of you may remember my thread last year (under a different name) from Alan’s kittenhood, about how the dirty little bastard kept pissing in the house, largely in reusable shopping bags. Thankfully those days are over but now I have an objectively worse problem.

Anyhoo, him and his sister Hattie have recently got into murdering things. It started with giant worms, and now what I’m getting is mice, shrews, birds and even a fucking massive frog. My wheely bin has become a morgue for the local wildlife.

Get a cat they say, then you’ll never have a problem with mice! WRONG. I never had a single mouse in the house until those two little feckers came along. And now, one of their victims escaped and has been having a rare old in my kitchen for about 3 months now. There’s mouse shit in the cupboards and drawers (thankfully not in any of the food cupboards), and recently when I opened a little used drawer, the mouse back flipped out of the drawer onto the floor and scarpered away. Proper jump scare. DD2 saw it last week sat under the boiler on the worktop.

Why those two furry little eejits don’t just kill it, I don’t know. Instead they bring me yet more mice in and murder them. Every time I find a dead one I hope it’s kitchen mouse but sadly not.

So, long story short, how do I get rid of this bastard mouse? The cats are clearly not going to help me out here. I will caveat this by saying I am quite literally petrified of mice and I’m a single parent. I know the options, old school traps, humane traps, poison. None of them sound good when you’re very scared of mice. I think poison is out because I do actually love the useless cats and don’t want to poison them. I’ve read that humane traps are actually the least humane thing to do as if you take a mouse out of its territory it will just die a horrible death. So do I have to get a Tom & Jerry style head snapper? I don’t want to but also I don’t want a mouse in the house really.

Photo of Alan for reference, he’s not quite the full ticket in his defence.

DD's birthday party was a few weeks ago. Loads of 12 year olds on a bouncy castle in the garden, nice music and sunshine and loveliness. Then in walks little dainty Spats, carrying a rat half her size which was shrieking its head off in terror. Good times.

Buttons, her much larger sister, brought us a magpie once. We reckon she just fell over on it and sat there till it submitted.

We've had voles, mice, rats, a magpie, a wood pigeon, a wren, yellow hammers, a goldfinch, and I don't know what else. And this is their first summer outside; last year they were only kittens and didn't go out. I dread to think what they'll be like with a few more years of practice. The field next door has sheep in the winter - I bet Buttons could squash one of those. Tasty Grin

I too have a not-Alan Alan, who firmly believes in his right not to have to get cold and/or wet whilst playing with his well not his but one he nicked off his sister mouse. He also favours the "let them go and chase them" playing method, but being stupid he lets them go and then can't find them, or gets distracted.

We put a ring doorbell on the cat flap so we can see if one of them has brought one in, and then we play hunt the mouse. It was both a game changer and a nightmare as now I know how many creatures come in vs how many I find. I'd say in the last 6 months we are missing 3 mice but we've found probably 6 or more in odd places, half dead, including inside shoes.

FeliciaFancybottom · 13/07/2022 09:14

Alan is a fucking legend, look at his face!

Fizbosshoes · 13/07/2022 09:19

I feel your pain OP. Never had a problem with mice until we got 2 cats. Now they bring them in to play with, get bored, let the mouse go and then mouse gives us the runaround turning up for days at a time but running away before we can catch it. Lazy cats have long since forgotten about it!!🙄
Annoyingly they always kill birds ....who are not likely to set up home under the kitchen plinths or behind the radiator cover in the lounge

Fizbosshoes · 13/07/2022 09:23

I am OK with mice but I do not want the cats to know this, DS found a live one in his trainers the other day!😳

easyday · 13/07/2022 09:23

Yep - never had an issue with mice til I got cats. So far my current two don't seem able to kill anything other than the odd fly (which they usually eat)!

Fizbosshoes · 13/07/2022 09:24

....I'm OK with them as in I'll catch them (if I can) and put outside. Definitely not OK with them actually living here and flaunting it

Omg 🤭 Alan 😂 I love him!
This thread is the best

@PrawnGoDookaDooka thats hilarious, DD2 suggested that the other week - put a ring doorbell on the cat flap, set the flap so they can go out but not come back in, and then only go and let them in if they’re not brandishing an animal in their gob 🤣🤣

We HAD rats, I got NotDog from a collegue at work. Husband called him NotDog as he is a cat.

NotDog is a ginger git. He started with worms moved to birds - never the fledglings weirdly - and has gradually gone up the size scale. Came down today to find a fully grown seagull in the lounge. In pieces, like a serial killers jigsaw. He is half the size of a blasted seagull. Not even sure how he fitted it through the catflap.

He should have been called Fred ( as in West)

Currently is sitting on the fence three doors down watching her chihuahuas. Im praying he has no ideas about them.......

CherylStreep · 13/07/2022 09:41

I <3 Alan - he's a beaut. Think he's unfairly taking the heat here - what about Hattie? I also have boy & girl cat. Girl cat is a much more accomplished assassin. Boy cat is a lazy yoke.

Unfortunately snap traps do not always kill cleanly. Had one set in a cupboard many years ago in a mouse ridden flat in my student days. Heard it go off. The mouse had run over it and was caught by the leg and still alive. Got the hammer and, after gritting my teeth, hit it on the head. Stunned it!!! By the time DP got home, it was coming round. Made him dispatch it and refused point blank to have them set again when I was alone in the flat. I would recommend a "live trap" (quite cheap on Amazon), then take the mouse at least a mile from home before releasing it....

MumOfNowGrownupKids · 13/07/2022 09:50

Oh, and bait the trap with chocolate. Mice are not very keen on cheese.

Margotshypotheticaldog · 13/07/2022 09:56

Oh if you get sick of Alan he can come and live with meeeeee 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

sleepymum50 · 13/07/2022 10:02

My go to mouse trap is a wellington boot.

Lay it on its side near to where you think the mouse is. Put in chocolate/biscuits/wild bird food etc. in the foot of the boot. Best against a wall.

The mouse will start going into the boot to eat, keep renewing the food (then you know he’s not eating wires). Then one day when you know he’s in the boot, pick it up and hold the leg opening closed, take into garden and lay boot on its side, and leave.

The mouse will run out and you can retrieve boot. This time of year the mouse will not try and get into the house. I find this method works well and you don’t have to handle or even see the mouse if you don’t want to.

I have murderous felines. I remember one particularly fun occasion when I removed a dead pigeon from the house and they kept bringing it back. Eventually I removed it only for the bloody dog to find it and eat it.

Seriously, that sounds like a good idea, if you've got to have a cat flap. (DM housetrained our cat, no flap or litter tray. She also trained him not to go upstairs or on worktops/tables. He was allowed to play the piano though.Grin)

I never watched League of Gentlemen but is it just me that thinks Alan looks like he's escaped from Royston Vasey?

fufulina · 13/07/2022 10:24

Plz send more Alan pics

Smorgasbordbaby · 13/07/2022 10:26

Alan is precious and must be protected at all costs.
I too have a pair of murderous psychopaths but thankfully they do prefer to kill their prey then leave their half eaten corpses in the kitchen for me to find in the morning.

Mummyoflabradors · 13/07/2022 10:28

Oh Alan is gorgeous! Wish I could have an Alan but bloody dh allergic to Alans☹️

PeloAddict · 13/07/2022 10:31

My cat hasn't killed anything ever. He did bring me a leaf once which was nice. He does tend to bring other cats home though, but only monochrome ones for some reason Confused

Greengr · 13/07/2022 10:36

Sid is only 4 months old and is about to start going out soon. He is practicing on flies 🪰and spiders🕷 spending all his time leaping in the windows! We hope he'll be a good mouser as well as killing the b........d moles that have literally dug up our lawn. He also likes getting in the fridge🙈

OldTinHat · 13/07/2022 11:07

I'm not a cat person but have to confess to loving Alan!

I had a mouse in my kitchen a few months ago (after being terrorised by rats from my neighbour breaking through two years ago, long story!). Anyway, not being in the servitude of an Alan or a Hattie (who don't sound very helpful tbh), I put tubs of neat bleach behind the kickboards in my kitchen. Apparently rodents don't like the smell. Mouse never came back after night one of putting them down - but my house still whiffs of swimming pool...!

longtompot · 13/07/2022 11:46

Alan is gorgeous! Fab name too😊

We had various 'presents' brought in by our boys. Live pigeon in the living room one morning. Two dead squirrels, one taken under our bed! A frog which is when I found out they scream and look smeared on a carpet to appear dead. It puffed back up a short while later and was released. So many mice, many of which died under our sofa which we wouldn't realise for a few days until the smell. One mouse escaped and was living in the corner of our living room. I tried to catch it but could never find it. One evening we were sat down for dinner and our ds said 'there's the mouse!' and it was sat, happy as Larry, on top of a shelf watching us!
