If you don’t have/had/want children why are you here?

I’m aware the title sounds quite nippy and I don’t mean it to. Having read a post from a person considering cutting off friends since they’ve had kids it genuinely made me wonder…if you don’t have or have had or want or even like children what attracted you to a forum where the main users are all of the above?

Am I being unreasonable to assume that users of MN have/had/want/like children?

They are here to have laugh at the gripes and moans of us who do have kids

ScreamingInfidelities · 12/07/2022 19:51

Fuck sake, this shite again 🙄

maddiemookins16mum · 12/07/2022 19:53

I googled easy brownie recipe…..still here 7 years later.

MinglingFlamingo · 12/07/2022 19:57

Came on for research about a uni assignment. Which was about paediatric health
Popular threads at the time were about yoni masseuses and penis beakers and it spiralled from there

TroysMammy · 12/07/2022 19:59

I googled hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in cats and found The Litter Tray.

It's the most varied, funniest and most tragic forum of any I have seen. It generally manages to tolerate ignorance with kindly informative help, and it has some incredibly well-informed and clever contributors. I started with 'rules I didn't know I needed to make', wet my knickers laughing for two hours and have remained a fan. And in the years since, I have asked for advice on how to assist my demented DMIL and coping with breast cancer, as well as pontificating on S&B topics. Someone on MN always has a useful contribution to make, and many are wickedly funny doing so.

AlwaysLatte · 12/07/2022 20:15

I think the main name should be changed - it's very dated and sexist, and understandably people either get confused at Dads or non-parents on here, or feel hesitant about joining up because they might feel they don't qualify. There could still be sections aimed specifically at parents.

Userxxxxx · 12/07/2022 20:18

I love being here. This is far less of a 'my answer is right and you should only listen to me, point scoring' forum/community, very fortunately and relievedly.

Plus the layout is simple enough. All are very friendly. No one is above anyone else kind of thing in terms of parents v's non parents, never would have entered my mind! gosh could you imagine it!

I'm sure when I worked for a young entrepreneur back in 2014 who mentioned m*msnet in some round about way as the first aforementioned site they thought of during a discussion we were having, way above others they could have mentioned and they don't have children either so it must be for more than parents alone.

Lanawashington · 12/07/2022 20:18

Yay! It’s been at least 30 seconds since we last had one of these threads so we were definitely due another one

userxx · 12/07/2022 20:19

Do you actually know how many topics there are on MN. Thought not.

Rainbowbaby13 · 12/07/2022 19:31

@Robin198 please note although mumsnet is a chat platform a lot of people hate questions 😂😂😂😂

😂😂😂

FortonServices · 12/07/2022 20:28

I googled haemorrhoid pain relief and mumsnet seemed to have the most useful advice. Voices of experience.

I stayed for the competitive housekeeping and parking threads.

All of the above are shared experiences, parent or non parent.

girlfriend44 · 12/07/2022 20:28

Op it's a bit rude to ask that.

Robin198 · 12/07/2022 20:46

Hawkins001 · 12/07/2022 18:55

Or they are writing a research perspectives

Yes, I registered an account around about the time my son was born but if you extend your research you’ll see I posted once then and then twice today. That’s the extent of my interactions on here. No need to fake ahh thing as I was asking a genuine question!

OP posts:
Matildalamp · 12/07/2022 20:52

I came here for help with the National Book tokens annual picture quiz, and stay for the scaffolding threads 😂

TheWayoftheLeaf · 12/07/2022 21:18

Majority female forum (one of the only online spaces that stays mostly female) with topics on relationships, beauty, cleaning, mental health, clothes, driving, chat...

Yes what can we childless women possibly find interesting about that? It's baffling

XenoBitch · 12/07/2022 21:18

Lots of interesting boards and topics, most of which are nothing to do with kids.
It is anonymous with no profile pic/avatar to faff about it, and no karma/reward system thing like you have with Reddit.

spoonfulofmustard · 12/07/2022 21:21

someone just started a thread on cat mugshots... that's why I'm here 😀

Cakecakecheese · 12/07/2022 21:24

Because Handbag.com stopped existing.

Although I am actually pregnant so I can post legitimately now 😉

bro101 · 12/07/2022 21:27

To be honest I thought the same 12 years back.

Some people are extremely defensive.

What's with the full time mum question?

CounsellorTroi · 12/07/2022 21:31

I don’t have children but love being here because there are so many lovely funny well informed women.

fernz · 12/07/2022 21:31

I initially came for Property & DIY and stayed for Style & Beauty, the Litter Tray and so much more. It's one of the biggest UK based message boards that attracts a wide variety of people and I'm generally curious about things so it's really interesting!

PritiPatelsMaker · 12/07/2022 21:33

I googled 'how to clean poo from carpet' and ended up here

I'm more intrigued why you'd have poo on the carpet if you haven't got kids? Grin

FortonServices · 12/07/2022 21:34

@bro101

It's those SAHM who infer that mothers who work full time are only part time mothers. They are busy living their best lives and making memories too. They tend not to plan in advance and are going to get a shock when they try to go back to work and apply for jobs claiming that managing the family budget qualifies them for a Finance Director job (I see these CVs all the time).
