Wind chimes that neighbour refuses to move

Yes, it's another AIBU about wind chimes. We politely asked our neighbours to move their wind chimes as we could hear them clearly in our garden and in our house with the windows or doors open (these aren't the little tinkly chimes but the big resonant tubular bells – Mike Oldfield would be proud). The neighbours were quite hostile but did move them – about two feet from where they had previously been. We could still hear them although slightly less frequently. We politely asked again but they were very aggressive, accused us of harassing them, and cut off all contact with us. The wind chimes remain. We can still hear them even on slightly breezy days. We can't leave our bedroom window open at night as the sound carries right into our room, which is especially frustrating during this hot weather. We've been quite distressed and frustrated and can't enjoy our house and garden like we used to. I guess some people might think we are being unreasonable – it's only a musical noise right? not a barking dog or anything – but this really is a problem for us. We've considered contacting the council about nuisance noise but this might be very provocative and also hard to prove. What should we do?

This thread is excellent. I've had a proper good laugh !

So, let me get this straight, people are not unreasonable for being irked by constantly barking dogs/screaming kids/t.v. on at full volume all the time/loud music/all night parties/shouting/slamming doors/revving or idling car engines etc.

But.....nuisance noise from wind chimes. Nope, perfectly acceptable to some people apparently. Anyone who has a problem with it should just get used to it.

OK, I get it people who live near a railway line don't hear the trains anymore, apparently people who live near an airport don't hear the aircraft after a while.

Maybe there just isn't the level of frustration that unwanted noise brings.

Even the aforementioned audible irritants stop eventually (only to start again though). Wind chimes, you've got no chance. Every time the wind blows....

We had a neighbour who had wind chimes a few years ago. I like the sound of the wind in the trees on an early summer morning when the windows are open at our house. Nope, had to have fucking tinkle tinkle tinkle of those blasted wind chimes.

The only way to turn the noise off was to close the window. Lose the pleasant ventilation and the nice sound of the gentle wind in the trees. Gee thanks.

Oh, and to the people telling the OP simply to, 'get used to it' I'd like to tell you to do that to things that annoy you and undermine your quality of life.

The sound wind chimes make are frankly anti-social. Whatever happened to the legal right to peaceful enjoyment of your property ?

Raise a noise complaint with the council. You've tried to speak to your neighbours but that went nowhere. Your relationship with your neighbours has now finished. So, what have you got to lose ? (Unless you are considering selling your house anytime soon and don't want to admit to raising a complaint with the neighbours via your local authority)

It's still nuisance noise and you can report it to the Council.

SunshineLaughter · 15/07/2022 07:15

Could you put up a set of wind chimes outside their window? 🤔

The neighbours are selfish and inconsiderate. Why would they think other people would want to listen to the chines?

I feel the same about neighbors who let their kids screech and scream all day in the yard.

If I have to endure that and other intrusive noise, they can put up with my wind chimes.

I've read about wind chimes on here before. I have one which I occasionally hang up if I'm out enjoying my garden, but the reason is that we have bastard barking dog on one side and screaming trampoline users on the other. It's a distraction from that for me. My neighbours wouldn't hear it above the barkers and screamers. It's a discrete tinkle. Tempted to upgrade it though.

Exactly.

I put up with a nightmare array of noise; my windchimes are nothing by comparison.

Are all those against them sure their kids, dogs and radios are silent 24/7?

fyn · 15/07/2022 10:53

@KosherDill usually kids, dogs and radios aren’t audible at 1am every time the wind blows though are they.

BashfulClam · 15/07/2022 12:29

A golden near us has these, luckily I can’t hear them from our garden but when I walk past and hear the clonking horrors I feel sorry for the direct neighbours. A device for idiots to work out when it’s windy!
