Wind chimes that neighbour refuses to move

Yes, it's another AIBU about wind chimes. We politely asked our neighbours to move their wind chimes as we could hear them clearly in our garden and in our house with the windows or doors open (these aren't the little tinkly chimes but the big resonant tubular bells – Mike Oldfield would be proud). The neighbours were quite hostile but did move them – about two feet from where they had previously been. We could still hear them although slightly less frequently. We politely asked again but they were very aggressive, accused us of harassing them, and cut off all contact with us. The wind chimes remain. We can still hear them even on slightly breezy days. We can't leave our bedroom window open at night as the sound carries right into our room, which is especially frustrating during this hot weather. We've been quite distressed and frustrated and can't enjoy our house and garden like we used to. I guess some people might think we are being unreasonable – it's only a musical noise right? not a barking dog or anything – but this really is a problem for us. We've considered contacting the council about nuisance noise but this might be very provocative and also hard to prove. What should we do?

We had a similar issue with a neighbour and I had to go round 3 times in the end. What worked in the end was saying we understood that they would want them up when they were in the garden and that was fine. But please just take them down afterwards.

luckily they moved soon after 😀

Genius! I can’t though, the fences are too high to climb. And I’m just too nice. But loving the creativity on here ;-D

That does sound like a reasonable compromise.

The more expensive, deeper resonance types have a way you can turn them "off" by muffling the sound.

DayreeMilk · 12/07/2022 17:22

I've read about wind chimes on here before. I have one which I occasionally hang up if I'm out enjoying my garden, but the reason is that we have bastard barking dog on one side and screaming trampoline users on the other. It's a distraction from that for me. My neighbours wouldn't hear it above the barkers and screamers. It's a discrete tinkle. Tempted to upgrade it though.

Cocolapew · 12/07/2022 17:22

My neighbour has small ones so it's a bit better. Where we are it can get really windy, fences, sheds, trampolines all get blown away and still the bloody wind chimes are there tinkling away 🤷

Albgo · 12/07/2022 17:22

Get a white noise machine. That way at least at bedtime you won't be able to hear them (hopefully even with the windows open)

fizzywat · 12/07/2022 17:28

Are people who have these abominable things deaf or what? Do they not hear them? I suppose it's like constantly barking dogs, the owners never hear them, but everyone else does!

I'd get a ladder and stick an elastic band around them, if they are that type of chime.. If they have teenagers I'd get the noise thinggy that drives them mad and put it somewhere near them, front and back., I would not damage, but I'd me on a mission for no fucking chimes.

I'd be

About 15 yrs ago we lived on a terrace row. We got on with the neigbours, not best friends but had the odd coffee and chat. Our kids were similar ages and played together in the gardens. One day out came some wind chimes next door, they were hung on the little hang over thing of the front door. Neighbour was delighted, I was not. They were plinky plunky noisy fucking things. We had dropped a few hints that they were beginning to get annoying trying to keep neighbourly without loosing the plot. But our neighbour lady had very thick skin, after about 2 weeks we were contemplating removing them ourselves, they went quiet. So we thought they had removed them, nope someone had wrapped each one in bubble wrap 😂 a few days later they vanished and were never talked about again.
Since then we've moved and as have many of the original neighbours, never did found out who the phantom bubble wrapper was, but they were the hero of our street that week!

Every time they go out in their garden, play “Tubular Bells” on repeat. They should get the message.

We’re not attached unfortunately (or
maybe fortunately!).

You'll need a long stick then 😉

I had no idea that wind chimes annoyed people so much. I've got screaming kids either side of me. I'd much prefer the sound of wind chimes than the sound of the 7 kids they have between them.

He he! Have to say, even though the poll is Indicating I’m probably being unreasonable, I do feel a lot better about the support. And also that maybe I just need to do my best to accept the noise. Thanks everyone 🙏

Buy loads of cheap nasty tinkly ones to hang as close to their window as possible?

It did occur to me that if I bought my own I might actually like the noise as it would be my doing and not someone else being inconsiderate. But no doubt that would upset the other neighbours!

Are they just wind chimes? Or are they musically tuned wind chimes.

I thought all wind chimes were the same until I experienced tuned ones. They are so calming and beautiful to listen to.

Untuned ones would drive me mad.

SheWoreYellow · 12/07/2022 17:48

Can you reach them? I’d try and muffle them with a dot of something on the central bit where they hit every chime. Clear sticky dots maybe? Or glue?

cottagegardenflower · 12/07/2022 17:55

saveforthat · 12/07/2022 16:57

Could you accidentally damage/destroy/lose them when they are out one day?

Good way to get arrested for criminal damage. Our neighbour was charged for destroying our plants

Notanotherwindow · 12/07/2022 17:55

Alternatively do you have a child who may have an undiscovered talent for drumming?

Kids all grown up now, but i may find a hidden talent for playing the bagpipes in the garden!

My neighbours don't like me. It's mutual.

Where can I get these super loud wind chimes please? 😁

D0lphine · 12/07/2022 18:04

Get a speaker. Blast dance music until 3am. When they complain do a deal.

"Oh our music is annoying? Ok well we'll turn it off if you take your wind chimes down."
