No refund on bridal make up after trial

MakeupWoes · 11/07/2022 17:39

I booked a highly recommended artist for my bridal makeup, and had to secure with a non refundable deposit before I was allowed a trial.

I've since had a trial, and the makeup was shocking. My face was caked on (I get for pictures), but in the heat, it was literally running down my face. It transferred everytime something brushed my face.

I'm left with proceeding with someone who's make up I really dislike because I can't afford to lose the deposit, or I have to borrow the money to change to someone else. WWYD?

Omg at the faux naivety I dont understand I wore no make up on my wedding day why would anyone want to be different to me? Maybe just maybe people are different maybe just maybe people like different things maybe just maybe to some people if feels like a treat and you know they want to 😯

Hellospring22 · 11/07/2022 20:20

I was researching non refundable deposits earlier this week as I’m setting up a business. It’s actually far more complex than you’d imagine and just because she’s stated it’s non refundable doesn’t mean she’s entitled to keep it.

Could you ask for a second trail with lighter make up? Most self employed people value happy customers and as long as your not a bridezilla about it I’m sure she won’t take offence.

I can do another trial, for her to make changes based on my feedback, but I have to pay for another trial

Makeup does not need to be caked on and thick for photos and to last! Total bollocks. Good quality makeup applied well on well prepped skin would be much better and last all day. Either explain what happened to the Mua and see if she can change what she did or cancel and do it yourself.

Wexone · 11/07/2022 20:26

you don't need thick make up for tour wedding day you need make up that will last and won't cause flashback in your photos. I had mine done by a girl who I have gone to before for my trial. she is very good but she did my eyebrows roo dark, eyelashes too heavy and it didn't last on my nose. the rest was lovely. I just explained that to her and on my wedding day she did a fabulous job. I wouldn't do my own make up on my wedding day. I wouldn't do it as good plus would have been stressed to the hilt if something went wrong. it's a fab treat for your wedding day. I would defoe reach out to her and explain your issues with it. that is what a trail is for.

Oceanus · 11/07/2022 20:26

BB has a great eyeliner gel and special blending brush (small and looks like a dome) that create a beautiful smokey eye for people who aren't used to doing it, if you have a very smooth canvas or don't really use many potions and lotions underneath. If you're over 40 you have to try it and see if it works for you, you might not like it or it might not work with all the stuff that we put on our faces. The older we get, the more we need to try things out for a bit before committing to anything.

Mum2jenny · 11/07/2022 20:27

I’d be inclined to leave a poor review for her stating your issues and I’d warn her first of your intentions. It may make her change her mind.

It's makeup, not magic. Everything is going to slide off in this heat

Nothing moved when I was bridesmaid at a destination wedding and another wedding here in the UK last year in similar temps.

Surely you just speak to the make up artist about what you didn't like? I felt like I didn't look like me after my make up trial, so we discussed why, and what I usually do differently, so that she could adjust. On the day it was amazing.

To show in photos, especially with a flash, it does need to be a lot heavier than normal day to day make-up so it's a balance really between putting up with it, or it not showing up so well in photos.

This has happened to a friend of mine. She booked an “Instagram famous” MUA thinking she’d get a good job done.

I thought it was a bit off when the make up artist demanded an £80 deposit for the wedding (6 months away) as payment up front, cash or bank transfer only, she wouldn’t take payment by card or PayPal and the wedding day deposit was non refundable - even before my friend had had a trial - but she refused to do a trial unless friend had booked in for her wedding.

Basically it’s a way of earning £80 for doing nothing.

On the day of her trial my friends foundation was about 8 shades too dark, looked like it’d been laid on with a trowel, not blended into her neck (however it was such a different shade to her neck it would have been impossible to blend it in to look ok) she had mascara all over her eyelids and the strip lashes the MUA had applied had popped off at the corners before she’d even got home. She asked for fresh, light and dewy and looked like a matt orange.

The MUA blocked her number and blocked her on social media when she complained and asked for her deposit back.

Are her initials KHM?

Sounds so similar to me, not the same initials though

Not everyone knows how to apply it properly and some people might want to look back on their wedding photos with happiness and not dread.

Thank you.
I wanted to look beautiful, not the same face that stares back at me everyday.
Even spending a day applying my makeup, I won't achieve how I'd 'like' to look. Still me - but far more elegant and 'put together' IYSWIM

I see two possibilities. Either bad/wrong products or a bad hand.
When you looked in the mirror the first 5 minutes did you think "I look amazing! I can't believe that's me!", if the answer's yes I think it was bad products she used (hency the way it looked after a while after setting), get new ones and tell her on the day this is what I want you to use.
If you looked in the mirror and thought "Hmmm... I paid 80 quid for this?! Is this it?!" you need to either get a proper professional to do your makeup or get new products and do it yourself. A bad hand will take time to become better, you don't want to be her guinea pig. Try to get the money back! Somebody had good advice upthread about getting your money back.

Vikinga · 11/07/2022 20:48

I don't know about bridal but my daughter had her make up done for prom and it was caked on. She would have been better off doing it herself. Didnt she have photos that you could see if you liked?

ScreamingToddler · 11/07/2022 20:57

stuntbubbles · 11/07/2022 20:09

What happens at 40? Do they stop selling you the makeup and send you over to Bobbi Crone instead?

I just laughed after taking a sip of tea and it ended about as well as you can imagine.

But in all seriousness, you need different eyeshadow once your skin starts looking more mature; glitter is the best (when appropriate) followed by matte and avoid frosted/shimmer as the shimmer will show creases really badly.

Oooohh please, now I'm going to be accused of ageism! Brilliant! I'll repeat myself here and before you ask I'm not getting anything for recommending BB, no 10 euros, no points and no free delivery here, zilch, so:

Personally, as I've gotten older I don't need to cough up for uber expensive tools anymore, I'll use whatever I have. Older women can see past the faff I think.

All these posters bleating “just do you own makeup”

FFS it’s her wedding! She’s doesn’t wanna look as she does day to day, she want to look special

let’s not pretend mumsnetters are too superior to feel like that.

LuckySantangelo35 · 11/07/2022 21:14

@FlamingoQueen

“Could you go to a department store and book a Bobbi Brown (or similar) makeover?”

Aye, that’s gonna work on the morning of her wedding isn’t it

PatientlyWaiting21 · 11/07/2022 21:29

MakeupWoes · 11/07/2022 17:49

The artist advised me it had to be thicker for photos, and I wasn't about to argue considering that is her job and assumingly she knows better than I. So whilst I asked about the thickness, she explained why.

However, it wasn't until it all started running once I was getting on with my day, that I saw the real problem of it moving so much

She’s not a clue if this is what she told you!

ItWasTheBestOfTimes · 11/07/2022 21:31

As PP said most makeup will slide off in this heat although of course you should have it more natural looking if that is what you like. I suffer from horrendous year round facial sweating so I use odaban on my face and it stops my makeup sliding off. Maybe something to consider as September can be quite warm too.

They teach you how to do the make up so that you can do it yourself. It was only an option! I thought that was the whole point of posting - that you get different opinions. Not really a need for such sarcasm, is there?

C152 · 11/07/2022 21:38

I would accept you've lost the £80 plus whatever you paid for the trial and move on. I understand that's a lot to loose, but it's better to loose it and be happy (and look happy!) on the day, than go ahead, spend even more, to be miserable and possibly not look good in the photos. FWIW, I did my own makeup (which literally consisted of mascara and lipliner) and the photos looked fantastic. You absolutely DO NOT need makeup caked on to look beautiful.

I had a trial with a famous brand that everyone said was supposed to be the best makeup brand there is - it looked hideous and brought my face out in a rash. Trust yourself.

I don't know about whether you'd be able to get the deposit back. Was it definitely a deposit, or could it be an advance payment (which you can get a refund for)? There's some info here that may help:

YABU. I am also getting married in September. I paid a deposit for a hair stylist, paid for a trial, didn't like so it so I cancelled. Didn;t get refund back and didn;t expect one - that is what the deposit is for. As she had held that date for me, and now it's very short notice to find someone to fill that date, so covers a small loss in earnings.

LuckySantangelo35 · 11/07/2022 22:11

Makeup artists know what they’re doing.

heavier makeup does look better for photos and will last longer

all these posters saying “I want to look like me” - you don’t wanna look like how you look popping out to Tesco do you?! You want to look good! Like you but better
