Dogs and this heat

AIBU to be stunned at the amount of people walking their dogs in this heat?!
I popped out at lunch, it’s 27 degrees here with not a cloud in the sky.
I saw several people walking dogs, including in a local playing field which has NO shade. These included long coated spaniels, an English bulldog and a husky(!!!) the husky in particular was obviously struggling.
I also saw two men stood in the street both with dogs that were sat panting heavily on the pavement chatting for at least as long as I was in the post office.

I wish I’d had the guts to say something to them, especially the husky owner… is it ignorance or is it people just not giving a shit about the welfare of their pet…

There are plenty of ways to provide mental stimulation for dogs which don't involve going for a walk.

Assisted a lady carrying her dog with heat stroke Friday last week, was about 11.30am. Dog completely lifeless in her arms, struggling for breath, it's tongue was navy blue, it was pooing all over her as gone into shock.

It's a real thing that does happen in this country. No dog ever died from not having a walk, regardless of its breed. Unfortunately I have no idea how the dog is, but my guess is they have learnt the hard way.

@AdamRyan I think you are talking crap. Don't take dogs out in the heat. Obviously some people in flats, or with dogs that won't toilet in the garden, are going to have to take a dog out. But not for exercise.

Exercise them when very cool - or brain train at home. They don't need walks every day - even high energy dogs. Unless they are cool under trees and in water.

Please say something, even if indirect, such as telling them of somewhere that offers dogs water.

What I would like to see is leaving dogs in cars be something that results in a lengthy driving ban, and anyone allowed to break into a car to rescue a dog without fear of any prosecution.

that pet plan link talks about breed dependant
so a pug is far more likely to suffer than a jack russell for example. <<similar size>>

I've just seen a tweet from our local police, telling the public they should call 999 if they see a dog left in a car in hot weather.

Absolutely do this. Its not worth the risk.

I got up at 4.30 thud morning to take mine to the woods before it got too hot. I keep the walks shorter than normal too. If it is cool enough late this evening will do a short one again.
