Dogs and this heat

AIBU to be stunned at the amount of people walking their dogs in this heat?!
I popped out at lunch, it’s 27 degrees here with not a cloud in the sky.
I saw several people walking dogs, including in a local playing field which has NO shade. These included long coated spaniels, an English bulldog and a husky(!!!) the husky in particular was obviously struggling.
I also saw two men stood in the street both with dogs that were sat panting heavily on the pavement chatting for at least as long as I was in the post office.

I wish I’d had the guts to say something to them, especially the husky owner… is it ignorance or is it people just not giving a shit about the welfare of their pet…

And actually, my dog won't go in my garden and hangs on until he gets to one of his preferred crapping spots which are all a few minutes walk.
Should i make him uncomfortable by withholding his poo, because some Internet randomers think there should be blanket rules for dogs being banned from public places at some arbitrary heat?
Honestly 🙄

SlashBeef · 11/07/2022 16:38

@AdamRyan embarrassed for you. You're so ignorant.

Simonjt · 11/07/2022 16:39

We live in a flat, when its hot we take our dog out the shadiest entrance of our building, sluice the floor and thats where he goes. We don’t use our home as an excuse to risk our dogs health.

He is also pad trained, so that is also an option, especially for a wee.

AdamRyan · 11/07/2022 16:40

How am I ignorant?

Mollymalone123 · 11/07/2022 16:41

Walked my Shetland sheepdogs at 8am -their first walk in 3 days-because they don’t want to walk or do anything except potter or sleep in the shade or in the tiles in the bathroom.the go to bed at 9pm and it’s been still too hot here to walk them then anyway. They have not suffered due to lack of exercise at all.I cannot understand anyway who insists on dragging their dogs around.selfish and not dog lovers

Ilikewinter · 11/07/2022 16:42

I took winterpup out at our usual 5.15am, it was lovely and cool, hes been home all day chilling on the cold kitchen floor, however hes now having a mad half hour chucking a rope around 😁

I think you have no idea what people's home circumstances are, and how long they were taking the dog out for.

Spaniels and huskies are high energy dogs who need mental stimulation, staying at home all day because it's hot might be worse for them than a walk.

Also long nosed breeds are much less at risk than short nosed breeds. And this is the UK so it isn't even that hot.

So YABU

There's so much ignorance in the above post that it's difficult to know where to start.

I sincerely hope you're not a dog owner.

I was out at 5.30 this morning with my dog and that's it for the day.

Dogs do, and will die from being walked in this sort of heat, not to mention serious burns to their paw pads if walked on pavements.

Even high energy dogs won't suffer from a few days of not being walked if it's impossible because of timing.

There's plenty of 'brain' work you can do with a dog at home.

Anyone who thinks it's all right to walk a dog in the sort of heat we're having at the moment should try putting on hat, gloves and a heavy coat and walking bare foot down the road for 30 minutes or so.

Lorrymum · 11/07/2022 16:47

Just returned from a weekend n Lyme Regis. So many dogs walking the hot streets, furiously panting and obviously uncomfortable. Sadly sometimes holidays and dogs really don't mix.

SoupDragon · 11/07/2022 16:48

My spaniel spends most of the day stretched out on the cold tiled kitchen floor. He'll get his walk at about 8pm!

if it's hot I will sometimes take him out to the woods where it's shady and cool but I'll always have water with me. It's unpleasant because of the heat of the car journey though so we usually stick to late and local.

I think you need to shut up and think.

It's 30 degrees outside. Pavements are hot enough to burn paws.
Heat prostration in dogs is real.
Not having a walk won't kill a dog, this heat can and will.

If you have a dog that needs stimulation them work at that, indoors. As I am doing with mine who hasn't been for a walk since 6 am and won't go out again until about 9pm - and even then those walks were/will be short.

Every dog owner should know that anything over 20 degrees can cause issues with some dogs here in the UK

Walked ddog at 9 30 pm last might as first time it was ciol enough. We have a dog walker who usually takes him out 1-2 hours but today he said outright he is doing no more than 30 mins as its the dogs max. Ddog did the 30 mins and slept for 3 hours after. Tomorrow is doggy daycare. They will ensure he is cool and looked after. However at the moment I'm more worried about how to keep him cool and hydrated than how long a walk he has.

You've been lucky. Don't push it. My dog won't use our garden as a toilet and he has to hang on to whatever he doesn't void in the morning. He's fine.

We too had a heat prostate dog earlier. Owner was walking on the shaded side of the road, under trees etc. Her dog sat down and refused to move. A neighbour drove them to the vet.

Shade means next to nothing with heat and humidity.

That's fine, you're following their lead( no pun intended) my ddog keeps going to the door wanting his walk and is running in and out of the garden.

i personally do not walk my dog but you do have to see people's reasoning for doing so,
every poster knows heat and kill
no body needs telling
it is verging on obession

Does every poster know heat kills? 19% voted that the OP was being unreasonable which means they don't seem to know.

Many idiot dog owners in the UK also don't seem to know or, if they do, they don't care.

Makes me so angry seeing idiots walking (or usually dragging) their dog in the heat. It's not even 1 or 2 people, loads of people walk their dogs when it is far too hot.

My idiot neighbour leaves her dog in the garden in the heat and the poor thing tries to find any bit of shade it can. No bloody sense and yet she is a nurse!

SergeiL · 11/07/2022 17:09

I haven’t taken my dog out in the heat today. Just to be clear on that.

But my dog will NOT poo in the garden. He will pee if he is absolutely desperate. He can generally hold poo in til he is walked. But he sometimes gets a bad tummy and he needs to go. He will literally run around the house crying and crying and getting more and more stressed. We have tried to wait as long as we can to try and force him to toilet in the garden but he will not. We have ended up having to walk him, sometimes in the early hours of the morning. This has happened several times over the years. What would you suggest I do it this happens in the heat?

He is a rescue and my guess is he got kicked if he toileted near where he was living before.

tomatopsste · 11/07/2022 17:13

Mine was out this morning at 5.30, back at 6.30!

I won't be taking her this evening.

JMoore · 11/07/2022 17:16

27°C is not really that hot where I live. It's warm. We've already had 38° and will go over 40° next week, which means that it is unlikely to cool down below 25° over night. My dog does not poo in the garden. That means we have to go out. We do a longer walk in the morning around 6am (30 to 60 min weekdays, longer at weekends) and then 10-minute breaks at lunchtime and again around 5 or 6 pm, plus a night-time round. No heatstroke.

We've also been to southern France this year with temperatures of 30° and over, where we have been out all day with the dog. Still no heatstroke. You have to be prepared - lots of water to drink and a mesh harness that can be dunked in water help, plus stops in the shade or grassy areas. She's also had a dip in a fountain in Lyon... We've never had a problem with heat. I love my dog, and my dog loves to go out with me. She asks for water, she swims in rivers, ponds and fountains, and I guess she's simply used to higher temperatures.

Our utter idiot of a dog kept sneaking out of the open back doors today to sprawl on the paving in the sun. It's far too hot for bare feet (as I found on tiptoeing wincingly out there to drag her back inside). Doors now firmly shut (sob).

Either she has a death wish, or she really likes the smell of Roast Dog Fur.

My dog goes outside. There is no way I'm keeping the door shut

Just returned from a weekend n Lyme Regis. So many dogs walking the hot streets, furiously panting and obviously uncomfortable. Sadly sometimes holidays and dogs really don't mix.

About 15 years ago we took our then dog on holiday to Wales. The week we were there they had a freak heatwave which lasted 5 of our 7 days.

We took our dog to the beach (2 minute walk from our cottage) at 7am each morning and then stayed in the cottage until late evening when we took him to the beach again (about 10pm).

We didn't really want to spend our holiday just sitting in a cottage but, as caring dog owners', our dog's health came first. Also no way would we ever leave a dog alone in a strange place

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 11/07/2022 17:20

Again, that's acclimatisation. Dogs also live in the Sahara.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 11/07/2022 17:20

StrangeCondition · 11/07/2022 15:32

Give an example of the full story then? What possible reason is acceptable to walk dogs in this heat?

To be fair they could live in a flat with no garden so they take them out for 5 mins for a wee

User3456 · 11/07/2022 17:23

I saw loads out yesterday looking uncomfortable. One was really worrying me. Severely panting sat in direct sunshine. Heat stroke is a serious possibility. I nearly went to speak to the owner but DH dragged me off. Hope the doggie was ok :-( YANBU OP.

GiltEdges · 11/07/2022 17:30

What a ridiculous thing to say. Heatstroke could equal death. Being understimulated for a day is still alive Confused

HelloAllll · 11/07/2022 17:32

Amazed that 17% of people disagree with you op!
Dogs should not be walked in the middle of the day in this heat, no matter how 'inconvenient' it is or how it afftects someones 'homelife'.
My working dogs were out for an hour between 4.50 and 6am. That is them fone for the day. They have had free run of the tiled kitchen and the garden to do as they please. Unsurprisingly they have chosen to be indoor for 99% of the day
