Hate this heat…need recommendations on places to relocate to in England!

Hello,

I wrote about this a few weeks’ back but I HATE the heat. I am so hot, uncomfortable and unhappy- so unhappy I could just cry with desperation and frustration.

Anyway, I can’t control the weather so am looking for recommendations for relocation to another part of England.

I can work (remote in admin or as a tutor or in person) in most places I suppose and I am single and child-free so no real commitments.

Any ideas on cooler climates in nice towns up north or maybe even Wales? I don’t fancy Scotland.

I currently live near to Wimbledon- a small town that is pleasant but overpriced and overcrowded and I actually fancy giving the north a go. I’m not terribly adventurous tbh and fancy a quiet small town/village not too far from a city. Looking for traditional pretty place with the odd cottage and plenty of countryside, I suppose. Sorry to be vague.

Any ideas? Thanks…

Northumberland area. Not that far from Newcastle and stunning.

crystalize · 10/07/2022 18:22

Chester, Harrogate, Knaresborough, York. Conwy, North Wales? Menai Bridge Anglesey...

enjoyingscience · 10/07/2022 18:23

Definitely northumberland

feellikeanalien · 10/07/2022 18:25

I agree. I'm sitting in my garden in Northumberland with a lovely breeze blowing Went up to 25 today but didn't feel too unpleasant.

Hexham is a lovely place with good road and train links to Newcastle and gorgeous scenery. Lovely coastline is about 45 minutes away although it does get pretty cold in the winter if you're not used to it.

Wouldn't live anywhere else.

HappyHappyHermit · 10/07/2022 18:27

Not exactly North but a village in Forest of Dean might suit, the trees keep it lovely and fresh feeling.

MichaelAndEagle · 10/07/2022 18:29

Northumberland, North Yorkshire or North Wales are all places i know quite well and sound like would suit you nicely!

KarrotKake · 10/07/2022 18:30

I'd put AC in your house, and stay where you are. Spend minimal time outside the couple of times a year it gets too hot, and enjoy your cool space.

I'm up north right now, and it's still unpleasant.

DorritLittle · 10/07/2022 18:30

It seems a bit extreme to move because of a hot spell of weather OP. Just saying. I dislike hot weather too by the way.

BlueKaftan · 10/07/2022 18:32

Lerwick might work?

EmmaH2022 · 10/07/2022 18:32

I sometimes wonder this but it's my flat that makes it so much worse

how is your home?

Thanks for suggestions, so far. Might have to visit to check out some of these places.

And yes, @DorritLittle , I can see why you’d think that but I can’t really afford to live here anyway! I’d like to rent a little 2 up 2 down near to my current home and they are not far off 2K pcm! And I do fancy living in another area whilst I’m relatively young.

It gets fucking cold up here OP, you need to think about your gas bill as well.

DorritLittle · 10/07/2022 18:43

If there are other factors that is fair enough. I also often hanker after a northern village. Having moved in my twenties to a small town with lots of settled couples and under 18s (on my own) I would just ensure you won't end up being lonely as Wimbledon is a very different kettle of fish potential-friendship wise to a remote market town.

bellac11 · 10/07/2022 18:45

We moved out of London 13 years ago, it wasnt the sole reason but London humidity is dirty, suffocating and exhausting and I cant tell you how much I dont miss that.

We're on the south coast now and temperatures are about 10 degrees less during this type of heat, my partner works in central London still, he watches the temperature come down during the drive home. Lovely.

RiverSkater · 10/07/2022 18:46

Morpeth, it's cold most of the time!

whatshouldIdo2022 · 10/07/2022 18:49

I moved from the south coast to south Wales and its significantly cooler although it does rain an awful lot. Really makes you appreciate sunshine though and hardly any need to water the garden!

Riverlee · 10/07/2022 18:50

Move to the coast? Sometimes their weather is slightly cooler.

Intransigentcat · 10/07/2022 18:51

Well coastal places up north are usually a few degrees cooler than inland so maybe Scarborough or Filey area, or Whitby might suit? The Howardian Hill area is lovely.

Or a higher elevation for cooler climes, somewhere up in the pennines? Round Huddersfield is reasonable and some pretty towns there. Honley is nice.

Northumberland is lovely, I lived up in Newcastle and surrounding environs are delightful. Alnwick is very pretty.

User48751490 · 10/07/2022 18:51

I am in England on holiday and finding the heat insufferable. Can't wait to get back to Scotland and taste fresh water out of tap that's also palatable. Tap water here is absolutely rank.

I have a longing to visit Lerwick - is anyone on here from there/lived there? Would love to know what it's like.

Melonportal · 10/07/2022 18:52

Morpeth or Corbridge?

Superdoopas · 10/07/2022 18:54

Whitby. ? Coast n moors. York hour away.

OhMerde · 10/07/2022 18:57

Chester, Harrogate, Knaresborough, York. Conwy, North Wales? Menai Bridge Anglesey...

All pretty much subject to exactly the same kind of temperatures as the rest of England.

Scotland is much cooler op and absolutely stunning. Skye, Harris, Lewis are all spectacular, although I acknowledge that you specifically said not Scotland!

garlicandsapphires · 10/07/2022 18:57

But this weather will be over in a couple of days! Then everyone will be back to complaining about a crap rainy summer. Surely you can last a few days?!

It's longer for the south...but I still shudder at the memory of 2018.
