Dated June 2020? The lid doesn’t bounce in the middle.

If the lid doesn't pop/bounce it has opened at some point.

No, that's not right. It's not supposed to press. That's the whole point. It's pressurised so if the lid can pop/bounce it has been opened.

zaza687 · 10/07/2022 12:41

It says it's best before that date but can eat it after that date

If the lid does pop, that means it has been opened.

The lid shouldn't bounce if it's still vacuum sealed.

This. So no.

Was once horrendously ill for days after eating a veggie burger that had been in the freezer for 6mo too long. It smelt and tasted fine.

I would guess that something else made you ill. Below -18 something like that would be safe to eat almost indefinitely but the taste/texture is likely to degrade.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 10/07/2022 12:44

You’ll know as soon as you open it. We had one that was very much off and dated 2021.

Exactly.

It wasn't a below -18, it was 6mo from the date recommended relevant to the star rating. Only those of us who ate the veggie burgers got sick so pretty conclusive. Use by dates are there for a reason, clearly. As opposed to BBE.

Izzy24 · 10/07/2022 12:48

Thanks all for bothering to reply ☺️

Clearing out cupboards and found two more - one also 2020 and one 2021…

2 different korma and one butter chicken. Nothing except sauce and in jars in a dark cupboard so will use them.

I do get the ‘why use them it’s only £1’ but I feel bad wasting it.

The poster who said this is why they don’t eat at other peoples houses - I know! 😂😂

Also……

Prunes which I decanted into a jar about a year ago…..?

No? 🤷‍♀️

It wasn't a below -18

The freezer needs sorting out then...

No, they'll have air in the jar too

😂 as in canned prunes? Even I would say no.

Preserves in glass are usually absolutely ok. If anything, the issue would be something that happened before cannong. I have jars here made in 2010.

chilledbubble · 10/07/2022 12:56

Maybe go through your cupboard once a month from now on?

parenthood1989 · 10/07/2022 12:56

@zigzag56445

That's not right though. The lid will pop if it's been opened.

ThreeLittleDots · 10/07/2022 12:58

There's nothing wrong with the freezer. It goes to -12C as a two star freezer. The veggie burgers were eaten 6mo after the use-by date as per the date for two star freezers on the box.

But yes, pick holes in my experience, why don't you.

It will pop off if has not been opened previously.
Having worked on food production lines, I know this. When the jar is filled and the lid goes on, a vacuum is created. When the jar is opened for the first time, the vacuum breaks and there is a pop. You can't create that vacuum again if you reclose it, so it won't pop again.

Riapia · 10/07/2022 13:25

If the jar is easy to open then the vacuum seal has been broken.
If you don’t know when the seal was broken ignore the bbf date don’t use it.

Agree with a pp - this won't make you ill. Frozen food - as a rule - cannot 'go off.' Risk is introduced if the temp of the freezer varies or if you've defrosted etc.

The jar - I'm VERY much in favour of 'just eat it' with fresh food (taste and smell test). Jars can be trickier. Botulism - for example - cannot be detected with our regular senses (no taste or smell). It's not likely here, but I'm more vary of bottled/canned products with inadequate seals that I am of fresh/frozen things.

It's the other way round, if the lid pops or bounces it means it has been opened.

ok, everyone’s talking at cross purposes now, half of use are talking about the indent in the top of a jar - if you can bounce that and make a pop pop sound, the seal has been broken.

you’re talking about when you actually open the jar and it makes a (totally separate) pop sound. Which would be missing if it has been opened.

ya see? Cross purposes 😁

fudfootedfannybangle · 10/07/2022 13:49

Did you keep the prunes to “aid digestion”? If yes, hang on to them because they’ll be 100 times more powerful than they once were… in fact you might actually leave orbit at the speed they pass through you. 😂

meanwhile - someone is feeling all the jars in Tesco and only buying the ones with a popped lid.

Seriously, the inference is that is its been opened already its not safe if its past its best before/use by. My point stands.

This sort of post is exactly why I never eat in other peoples houses!

You could eat in mine safely. I've fed MUCH older than this to family 😆but I wouldn't be feeding a jarred sauce to guests anyway.

As above, if seal is good, it looks and smells fine, it'll be fine.
