Home costs reality check

I've just asked my DH and adult DC how much they think it costs to run our household for a year/week. Not the car, not cigarettes/clubs/personal activities, not repairs/replacing broken items, not buying plants for the garden, just running a 3-bedroom house itself. We don't have a cleaner/gardener/window-cleaner.

DH said 10k, DC said 9k - actual was closer to 14k.

Rent/mortgage - 0 (we own outright, thank goodness)
Council tax - 1890
House ins - 546
Gas and elec - 2525
Water - 530
TV licence - 158
Sky TV/phone/internet - 1839
Food shop/local extras/cash purchases - 6107

Total £13595 a year / £261 a week

Anyone care to compare? also, did I forget anything?

Not everyone is mortgage free like you.

Fairyliz · 09/07/2022 14:11

Your insurance seems high how big is your house? We pay £287 for a four bed detached.

Geneticsbunny · 09/07/2022 14:16

You forgot building maintenance and repairs.

Bluevelvetsofa · 09/07/2022 14:16

Our council tax is way more than that and our house insurance about half.

RagzRebooted · 09/07/2022 14:23

£22,360. But ours includes rent.

Apprenticedeg · 09/07/2022 14:34

Total : 8228

PancakeB0atryde · 09/07/2022 14:35

House insurance approx £100 per year
Never auto renew
Shop around every year

flashbac · 09/07/2022 14:38

Sorry, not the point but no council tax or water rates in Ireland! What's the catch?

Apprenticedeg · 09/07/2022 14:43

@flashbac i don’t know 🤣 ppl say it’s more expensive in general but I don’t think so these days (I used to live in England!)

Gingerkittykat · 09/07/2022 14:47

Do you really spend £153 per month on Sky?

I'm not going to give my exact figures but it is less than you. My council tax is approx £900 for a start and that includes water and sewerage as I am in Scotland. I've just negotiated my Sky broadband down to £25 a month, it includes landline rental which I never use. I gave up my TV license and only watch things on catchup or Netflix/ YouTube for free (obviously no iPlayer). My student DD pays for Netflix and Amazon prime but I wouldn't bother with Netflix just for myself.

soootiredddd · 09/07/2022 14:59

Roughly speaking per month
mortgage £1050
CT £170
Home insurance £20 but we pay annually
tv license £14
gas/elec £100
water £30
internet £25
generally I allow £1500 for bills as we have a couple of other DDs that are for non house related thing such as contact lenses and dental plan.

then food shop £400 per month
so total per year around £2300

however to me you do need to include maintenance in here too such as repairs. Although I understand the costs are hard to predict eg we have just had to replace several windows which has cost an eye watering amount.

soootiredddd · 09/07/2022 15:01

Also I’m aware that the mortgage makes us sound like we live in a mansion, we do not. It’s an average sized 3 bed semi. But it cost nearly £400k as house prices here in the SE are insane. We have now done some work and it’s gone up in value so now worth £500k and we still owe £300k.

Rent/mortgage - 4620
Management company (inc insurance) - 1920
Council tax - 1200
Gas and elec - 720
Water - 240
TV licence - 158
Sky TV/phone/internet - 348 (I don't have sky)
Food shop/local extras/cash purchases - 2880

12,086 so basically 50% of my wage

forinborin · 09/07/2022 15:23

I think food shop and sky / other entertainment are a bit optional here, OP, as "home costs", as it technically isn't "running the house". You and your family might just have different definitions of what is in, what is out. Some people might add, say, commute and childcare too.

What’s the point if your snarky jealous comment? Where did she say others are mortgage free?

Tonysopranosghost · 09/07/2022 15:35

Rent 6600

Council tax 1090

Water 468

Gas/Electricity 2400 (estimate)

Internet & landline 312

Total 10,870

Ilikewinter · 09/07/2022 15:41

Well our mortgage costs over £12k and I dont want to add up the rest 🤣🤣

Ilikewinter · 09/07/2022 15:43

Well with the rest on your list im approx £22k, wow 😥

dworky · 09/07/2022 15:46

How come husband doesn't know?

ihavenocats · 09/07/2022 15:55

Socially housed, no repair costs (what's your average in repairs?) 320/month. 3 bed, huge garden. Nice area.
Council tax - 1200
House ins - the what now?
Gas and elec - 1200
Water - 530
TV licence - idiot tax
broadband - 29
Classes for our child (home ed) - hard to quantify as they change a lot but let's say £100/month
groceries 200 a month for essentials and another 50 here and there in top ups.

We are not wealthy, we run out of money at the end of each month but both have secure income that means we know we will be paid, all the bills paid, and we have all our shopping in so not short on anything except spare cash.

Together we earn about £40K/annum. I WFH casually so take on all the housework. He does long weeks one for career prospects and two for extra income.

Minimalme · 09/07/2022 16:03

I hadn't actually considered the total home running costs op.

No wonder we're always skint!

Testina · 09/07/2022 16:19
