Home costs reality check

I've just asked my DH and adult DC how much they think it costs to run our household for a year/week. Not the car, not cigarettes/clubs/personal activities, not repairs/replacing broken items, not buying plants for the garden, just running a 3-bedroom house itself. We don't have a cleaner/gardener/window-cleaner.

DH said 10k, DC said 9k - actual was closer to 14k.

Rent/mortgage - 0 (we own outright, thank goodness)
Council tax - 1890
House ins - 546
Gas and elec - 2525
Water - 530
TV licence - 158
Sky TV/phone/internet - 1839
Food shop/local extras/cash purchases - 6107

Total £13595 a year / £261 a week

Anyone care to compare? also, did I forget anything?

Mortgage/rent £0
electricity/gas (including charging electric car) - £2200
house insurance £100
council tax £2400
water £1000
phone/internet £600
sky/prime/Netflix/by sport etc £1400

TwittleBee · 09/07/2022 18:17

Rent/mortgage - 10800
Council tax - 1550
House ins - 300
Gas and elec - 2650
Water - 450
TV licence - 160
Internet - 360
Food shop - 5500
Total : £21,750

This isn't including general maintenance, childcare (£11k) or fuel and other bills.

GettingReal · 09/07/2022 21:05

Some good points here - I didn't include maintenance because we haven't been here that long, still doing it up. We've replaced most of the windows, but we're not likely to do it again for example. But agree it should be considered in thinking about how much it costs to run a house. When I said 'local extras' I meant as well as the main food shop, if we run out of milk and buy it from the corner shop etc.

Socially housed, no repair costs (what's your average in repairs?) 320/month. 3 bed, huge garden. Nice area.
Council tax - 1200
House ins - the what now?
Gas and elec - 1200
Water - 530
TV licence - idiot tax
broadband - 29
Classes for our child (home ed) - hard to quantify as they change a lot but let's say £100/month
groceries 200 a month for essentials and another 50 here and there in top ups.

We are not wealthy, we run out of money at the end of each month but both have secure income that means we know we will be paid, all the bills paid, and we have all our shopping in so not short on anything except spare cash.

Together we earn about £40K/annum. I WFH casually so take on all the housework. He does long weeks one for career prospects and two for extra income.

You pay £1700+ a month in utility bills for a council house? Bullshit

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 10/07/2022 06:12

Rent 15000 a year and I'm going to stop there, as that's depressing enough.

(SE, can't move to cheaper area, can't get a mortgage as we don't have time to pay it off before retirement).

This is a thread about annual costs.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 10/07/2022 09:30

I've never looked at it as an annual figure, only a monthly one.

Mortgage £800 = £9,600
Council tax £123 = £1,476
Gas and electric £153 = £1,836
Water £36 = £432
TV licence £13 = £161
House insurance £19 = £225

Totted that lot up and annually it's just shy of £14k.

Maintenance comes out of savings so I don't have a separate budget for that. I just tried some random figures (eg, replace kitchen every 20 years, new roof in 40 years, repaint one or two rooms every couple of years) and it's around £2,500 pa.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 10/07/2022 09:36

I forgot internet in my breakdown - it's £20 pcm or £240 pa - but it's included in the annual £14k.
