I earn a 6 figure salary...

Just reading another thread and pretty much every post is going on about "6 figure salary" - as if this is some sort of meaningful marker.

But obviously there's a massive difference between someone on £100k and someone on £900k. So by "6 figure salary" are they just essentially saying they earn around £100k? If they earned £250k, how is it acceptable to describe that?

Does it matter?

Singleandproud · 09/07/2022 09:57

It doesn't matter, either way it makes they are wealthier than the average bear.

Raquelos · 09/07/2022 09:58

Surely once you've hit 6 figures it's all gravy!!

floweringpoppies · 09/07/2022 09:59

🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'd love a 6 figure salary, so many can only dream of it!

Meraas · 09/07/2022 09:59

100k is meaningful, when the average wage in
the UK is £26k (I think).

If someone is on £250k or 900k they’re unlikely to just say they’re on 6 figures, they will
probably give other markers of wealth (e.g. £5m house).

YABU to think people on Mumsnet tell the truth about their salaries!

spotcheck · 09/07/2022 10:02

I’m not quite sure what you’re getting at- are you worried there are too many people in your club?
The point people are making when they say ‘six figure salary’ is that they are high earners

LordEmsworth · 09/07/2022 10:04

Well... 1% of the UK population earns £120k+ so we are broadly talking about the top 1% of UK earners. There are half a million individuals in this group. So it's a pretty elite group who are going to be very different to the "average" across the other 53.5m UK adults.

0.5% earn £236k+. 0.1% earn £650k+.

So if you really need to differentiate between those earning £125k and £250k then "the 1%" or "the top 0.5%" would do it. But I am not quite sure why we'd need to differentiate between "these quarter of a million people who earn over a quarter of a million, and this quarter of a million who are just on a six-figure salary". The point of saying "six-figure salary" is surely to HIDE your actual income while making it clear that it's high - otherwise someone could just tell you their income?

My husband is on a 6 figure salary, more than 100k and into 45% tax. Why would you specify how much? Beyond 60 % tax and onto 45% or just tipping into the 60% tax. I have to say though, you have a point. Between 100-125k a person would be wise to throw everything over 100k into a pension. The tax rate is pretty disgusting at 60% and it’s why much talent moves away. I don’t think it’s ever occurred to him to highlight his salary to be honest.

herehearher · 09/07/2022 10:06

No DecimatedDreams, of course it doesn't matter (like a lot of things on here).

It's just something that struck me glancing at the Russell Group uni thread - eg, "I went to such and such... and now am a mystical 6 figure earner..," post after post.

Why is "6 figures" a mystical salary? Why not just say what you earn? Yes, I get that it's higher than the average salary , but after tax, it's not that much at all somewhere like London.

I earn a six figure salary too 👍. All depends if I'm living in Fantasyland that day or how may zeros I add after the full stop. Life's usually about that one month ment in time you make a great decision or get that lucky break or have friend family in the in the right place.

People on shit wages often work a dam sight harder and longer than those on six figure salary's it's just they never had that break or opportunity.

Why do you disbelieve that 6 figure earners exist? Is it really so hard to fathom?

Sorry, that is bollocks.

My husband and I are both working class, the first to obtain degrees in our family. We work bloody hard for our qualifications and opportunities. I’ve been skint, homeless, lived in council housing, full benefits, the lot.

My husband is an extremely high earner, he worked hard to get where is is and he works bloody long, high pressured days to command his salary.

Enough with the bitter, sweeping statements. Green isn’t a nice colour. Plus, it’s utter crap.

Perfect28 · 09/07/2022 10:13

It's disingenuous to say it's not that much OP when it's 4 times the average and as another poster points out, 99% of people earn less. This post is basically a boast. The truth is though that the more you earn the likely your job is more immoral and or less helpful to society, two things I wouldn't be so proud of.

CredibilityProblem · 09/07/2022 10:14

The raw numbers tells us that there's more people earning in the 100-250 range than there are in the 250 plus range. If someone says they're earning six figures then I'd assume they meant somewhere in the 100-200 range, both because that's what the data suggests is more likely and because if you were up much higher you'd probably indicate that specifically - though I can't remember ever seeing anyone apart from Xenia claiming to be in that range.

There are hundreds of thousands of people in the 100,000 plus range, I assume a lot of them are on MN.

Perfect28 · 09/07/2022 10:15

Itsasecret care to share what he does that is so hardworking?

mizzo · 09/07/2022 10:16

Yes, I get that it's higher than the average salary , but after tax, it's not that much at all somewhere like London.

Bingo!

A six figure salary is a lot of money. Yes to live in some places, London being one of them you might have to spend a big chunk of it on mortgage or rent, that doesn't mean it's not a lot of money though.

sst1234 · 09/07/2022 10:16

OP, the problem is that there is a sizeable proportion of people on MN who disbelieve other posters are when they say they earn 6 figures. They have such a narrow world view that they simply think anyone claiming to earn that on here must be lying. Despite knowing that ordinary people like doctors and civil servants earn this. That’s before you consider people in the private sector and larger organizations.

So the issue is that some many people on here think of it as mythical rather than just poking around them. It doesn’t even require imagination.

Perfect28 · 09/07/2022 10:15

Itsasecret care to share what he does that is so hardworking?

Why would I do that? He often works 17 hour days, has a lot of responsibility and a lot of stress. It’s quite clear you have a significant issue with higher earners. I’m here to clarify that higher earners don’t just walk into that money all of the time. To suggest otherwise is just false and bitter.

TyneTortoise · 09/07/2022 10:17

It’s just shorthand for ‘high earner’ OP.
Also for the average person 100K vs 300K doesn’t matter. It’s still in the same category of A LOT.

sst1234 · 09/07/2022 10:17

Bingo, another person who doesn’t understand the high cost of living in London, especially if you’re not subsidized by the taxpayer. Which £100k earners aren’t.

Curiosity101 · 09/07/2022 10:19

@Perfect28 I wish that wasn't true but it definitely feels like it is. I've always said if I won the lottery I'd quit my current job and go and work (or volunteer) at an animal shelter or a farm or something.

Perfect28 · 09/07/2022 10:20

The London point- most earners in London are still not reaching that figure. The bitter point- I'm not bitter, I'm angry. I believe in a ratio between top and bottom earners, the inequality in this country is disgusting.

And don't try and nullify the point about hard work. Many carers and NHS staff work similar hours on pittance. If there were true correlation between hardwork and pay you would happily disclose.

Pay transparency is needed now.

AnaïsM · 09/07/2022 10:20

A lot of people on six figures will have a highly variable salary, so won’t have an exact number to quote.
