To think that not being paid on time is unacceptable

I started a new job last month and today is payday.
Gave all bank details and so on well in advance.
In most jobs I've had the money enters my bank account just after midnight or early hours.
Still haven't received anything so I emailed payroll team to ask if there was a rough idea what time it went into bank accounts usually.
They just replied saying, "the money hasn't left the payroll account yet, if it doesn't come in today it should be Monday."

I don't think this is good enough really. Monday is still 3 days away and luckily I have some money to tide me over until then but I imagine that not everybody does, or have direct debits coming out on Payday or just after.

Every job I've had bar one abroad, they've always paid on the day we were due to be paid.

Terrible and unprofessional of them. Tell them you want an immediate BACS transfer.

TokyoSushi · 08/07/2022 13:57

Oh no that's really bad. We always put paying the staff on the right day before anything, as you say, people have direct debits etc. I'd be questioning what else went on in the company if that's the way that they operate...

Angelaanaconda1 · 08/07/2022 13:58

Yeah, it's the fact that there was no apology or explanation either. Just an assumption.

YANBU

Literally the over riding reason you are there

that would boil my piss

Angelaanaconda1 · 08/07/2022 14:00

I used to work in Switzerland and the payday was anything between the 22nd and 28th! No idea if that's the norm over there, but it was infuriating.

What does your contract say? For example, mine specifically says the date of the month it will be paid - if there's a weekend or bank holiday, it's paid early so they're not in breach of contract.

LittleOwl153 · 08/07/2022 14:03

When does your contract say you will be paid? If your contrac says 8th of the month, 2nd Friday or anything else what specifically points to today then they are in breach of contract as it is an unlawful deduction of earnings to not pay on time.

If on the other hand the contract says 2nd Monday 11th or something else relating to next week but they said they usually pay on the Friday before then there is sadly little you can do.

Angelaanaconda1 · 08/07/2022 14:04

I'm still waiting on my contract sadly...even though I've been there for 3 weeks and have asked them twice if my contract is ready.
I was told it would always be on X date though and before if this date fell on a weekend.

The contract issue is a whole other thread I guess!

Justcallmebebes · 08/07/2022 14:12

Let me guess..... care work?

Therealjudgejudy · 08/07/2022 14:16

That's awful...the wages and contract issues.

What reason have they given for not supplying you a contract before or on your start date?

Angelaanaconda1 · 08/07/2022 14:18

It's not actually care work it's in private education!
They have just been 'very busy' and 'not got round to sorting it' apparently.

Technically it means I could just leave with a week's notice if necessary?

OP posts:
Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 08/07/2022 14:48

That is non negotiable for me. I would leave. I work in a straight exchange for money. End of deal. No pay means I don’t work for them.

Not sure what you mean by technically. Unless notice period has been agreed verbally you can leave whenever you like as there's no contractual agreement.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/07/2022 15:13

If you've only been there three weeks you could have missed the cut off.

I think leaving is a bit of an over-reaction if the job is otherwise OK, but they absolutely should be giving you a written contract, which should include the payment date clearly stated.

Plus if your money isn't there on the stated day (BACS arrives 2 days after it is sent) they should do a same day payment before the end of the working day. They shouldn't leave you without your salary over the weekend.

OdeToSadDisco · 08/07/2022 15:13

In 8 years of doing payroll (amongst many other things) I've never paid people late. It's literally my absolute top priority. Completely unnaceptable.

DogInATent · 08/07/2022 15:15

You've only been there three weeks, this is your first payroll. Given that you don't have a contract yet, is it possible that things haven't been completely set-up for you?

Have you asked colleagues if erratic payroll is normal for that business? or asked payroll if this is because you're a new employee or a regular occurrence?

Angelaanaconda1 · 08/07/2022 15:16

Payment today is for work done from 1st till 30th June and I've been there since the 15th so definitely shouldn't have missed anything

OP posts:
Angelaanaconda1 · 08/07/2022 15:17

I got a notification from my bank saying my scheduled payment has been set up. Either way, I've worked and deserve to be paid like everyone else. It doesn't matter that I'm newer. 3 weeks is plenty of time to get me set up, no excuse

Angelaanaconda1 · 08/07/2022 15:18

I'm now worrying that it won't come Monday either

Iheartmysmart · 08/07/2022 15:24

That’s very poor of them. I started a new job on 13 December last year and didn’t really expect to be paid due to payroll cut off. I was paid on 23rd of that month the same as everyone else so it can be done.

One of the worst companies I ever worked for insisted on paying by cheque on the last working day of each month. This was back in the day when you had to wait for them to clear! If the boss couldn’t be bothered to come in with the cheques on payday then you had to wait!

NeedAJobChange · 08/07/2022 16:15

Have you checked with any colleagues if they have received their pay?

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 08/07/2022 16:18

I did work for one company where the cut off was a full Month before. I started in mid December and didn’t get paid till the end of January. However this was explained to me beforehand
