To have slamed the door in the local MPs face?

Working from home today and there's a knock at the door, glanced out the window and it looked like the bloked we'd booked to sort DHs car so I click save quickly and make my way downstairs to find whoever knocked has already gone. Stick my head out and I can see 3 blokes at various neighbours wearing red labour rosetts clearly canvassing for the upcoming local election. They've already been once a week or so ago, I've had the speal.

Off I go back upstairs and by the time I get to the top there's another knock. So I open it and recognise the local mp from the aproximatly 6000 leaflets weve had lately. I ask if he's just knocked a minute ago. He says yes in a jokey 'oh wasn't it funny I didn't wait long enough' way. So I said right well if u havnt got time to wait 30 seconds for me to get to the door I havnt got time to stand here and talk to you, I'm busy trying to work. Shut the door and went back to work.

Was I unreasonable? It does my head in when posties do this aswell although I can understand more that they are on a tight schedule. What do the less able bodied do just never get to whoever is being so impatient?

Sounds like you missed an opportunity to grill your MP on issues in your area.

Maireas · 07/07/2022 19:43

What election is this?

ElsieMc · 07/07/2022 19:43

They are too lazy to even knock on the door here op, I get a leaflet through the letter box at best.

Mind you, there is a very well known MP of whom i am not even a constituent who for some reason regularly asks me for money , sorry donation, addressing me personally each time. He was saying there were loads of rumours flying round Westminster and he wanted funds for a general election. I find it bizarre as I am a non working grandparent carer not a wealthy party donor.

FurBabyMum02 · 07/07/2022 19:43

Its just the local councillors election

I am very confused. Wasn't that on 5th May? Where do you live?

Dreikanter · 07/07/2022 19:56

Did it take you 2 months to open the door? Local council elections were on 5th May.

DistrictCommissioner · 07/07/2022 19:57

MP out for local council elections?

EltonsSpareGlasses · 07/07/2022 19:58

Not aware of any local councillors elections. Last ones were in May.

MP out for local council elections?

That was my thought too.

Are you sure it was your Labour MP?

Jalisco · 07/07/2022 20:03

It's quite offensive to refer to us as "less abled". There's no doubt many ways I'm "more abled" than you. My door has a sign that tells people that I may be slow to answer due to restricted mobility. And if I'm to busy to answer the door, I don't.

That sign sounds good. My ds is physically disabled and now he's older he will answer the door when I'm out. But it won't be at speed 🤣

MPs do canvas for local elections quite often.

Bunnyfuller · 07/07/2022 20:17

He’s not an MP ffs. And it’s ‘spiel’, from the German ‘speak’.

CIammy · 07/07/2022 20:18

I used to go canvassing. No excuse for rudeness tbh. If you really did slam the door in their face you’d be about 1 in 100. Most people are lovely and engaging.

JennyForeigner · 07/07/2022 20:24

YABU. I don't have much time for the Tories and would tell them all day long what I disagree with, but whatever the party, these are volunteers, out talking to people in the community and picking up casework. You are lucky to have an MP that does it. Half of the MPs in safe seats don't bother.

Sounds like they had a perfectly reasonable system of knocking and sending the MP back where there was someone in. No reason to be rude to them about it.

FurBabyMum02 · 07/07/2022 20:24

Yep it was the local mp, our election is today no idea why we're different. I've just been doing bedtime with DS and he's been back to see if we're going to vote now it's after work! Must be desperate

Can anyone solve the mystery of where there are local elections at the moment?

Oh yes! We got that here. Desperate not to lose the seat but they did.

I'm sorry I didn't mean to be offensive, I only meant to wonder how people who are slower in getting to the door for whatever reason deal with it as many people that come unannounced, to us at least, seem to expect u to just be waiting behind the door for them.

Well done. I'm so annoyed at all the politicians and their arrogance, that I'm going to vicariously celebrate how well you responded to the politician. Clearly, their time is more valuable. Atleast you had an actual visit. My area- the winner is such a sure shot, they just drop in leaflets.

Dreikanter · 07/07/2022 20:32

Google tells me that there is a local council election today in Milton Keynes due to the death of a councillor?

JaniceBattersby · 07/07/2022 20:35

There are by-elections up and down the country regularly when councillors die or resign. They pretty much always take place on Thursdays. MPs often canvass on the doorstep.

But yes, YWBU OP. He’s doing his job, knocking on doors to find out the priorities of local people. Nothing wrong with that. No need to be rude.

Siepie · 07/07/2022 20:35

Bunnyfuller · 07/07/2022 20:17

I'd check your German dictionary before you correct other people.

WhiteFire · 07/07/2022 20:37

It was maybe a little dramatic but hey ho.

Places often have stand alone elections if the local councillor or MP has passed away. The two times it happened locally to me it was close to the main elections so it carried over but otherwise it would be a local one for that ward etc. (So yes election (s) are happening today)
