To have slamed the door in the local MPs face?

Working from home today and there's a knock at the door, glanced out the window and it looked like the bloked we'd booked to sort DHs car so I click save quickly and make my way downstairs to find whoever knocked has already gone. Stick my head out and I can see 3 blokes at various neighbours wearing red labour rosetts clearly canvassing for the upcoming local election. They've already been once a week or so ago, I've had the speal.

Off I go back upstairs and by the time I get to the top there's another knock. So I open it and recognise the local mp from the aproximatly 6000 leaflets weve had lately. I ask if he's just knocked a minute ago. He says yes in a jokey 'oh wasn't it funny I didn't wait long enough' way. So I said right well if u havnt got time to wait 30 seconds for me to get to the door I havnt got time to stand here and talk to you, I'm busy trying to work. Shut the door and went back to work.

Was I unreasonable? It does my head in when posties do this aswell although I can understand more that they are on a tight schedule. What do the less able bodied do just never get to whoever is being so impatient?

Google tells me that there is a local council election today in Milton Keynes due to the death of a councillor?

Ah, thank you.

justfiveminutes · 07/07/2022 20:42

MN is a funny place about people knocking on a door. Round here, you answer if you want to and ignore it if you don't. If they've got a lot of houses to get around, and kind of expect a lot of people to be out as it's during the working day, I guess I can understand why they'd knock and move on. I don't think I'd have felt the need to be quite so rude to them but I know mn often calls that assertive.

Maireas · 07/07/2022 20:44

Yes, I can see Carole Baum sadly passed away.
The two MPs for Milton Keynes are Conservative, though. Have the Labour party sent in someone else?
Any MP I'd like to talk to, though. Just to vent!

AmaryIlis · 07/07/2022 20:45

What's speal, OP?

Somatronic · 07/07/2022 20:45

YABU. I don't think there's any need to be rude. People complain when politicians canvass and they complain when they don't. It's impossible to please everyone.

I canvass regularly and you meet all sorts of people who take issue with all sorts of bizarre things like this. But most are fine. When I am at home and don't want to speak to a canvasser or local politician I manage to get that message across politely.

Also, canvassers calling back to undecided voters and checking in to see if people have voted in the day is normal election behaviour many places.

ilovesooty · 07/07/2022 20:46

You're obviously quite happy to be rude, and in any case it's done now.

CareBear50 · 07/07/2022 20:48

I think you were a bit rude OP. Doesn't sound like he was

Leftbutcameback · 07/07/2022 20:52

Isn't spiel German for play? Like play area - spielplatz

Pinklimey · 07/07/2022 20:53

at least you are important enough to be canvassed. No one ever comes around here.

Maireas · 07/07/2022 20:55

I think Spiel is a Yiddish word meaning sales pitch.

MajorCarolDanvers · 07/07/2022 21:00

It' was rude.

People complain they never hear from their politicians and then they do this.

Maireas · 07/07/2022 21:02

I'd love to talk to an MP - local or otherwise. Like pp have said, you so rarely see them in the flesh nowadays.

Maireas · 07/07/2022 21:06

Anyway, as your local MP is Conservative, the person with the red rosette must have been someone else. Did they look familiar?
If it was a Labour MP trying to drum up business that's actually good.

maddiemookins16mum · 07/07/2022 21:16

YABU, rudeness is such an unpleasant trait.

MP out for local council elections?

My MP always turns out for council elections.

Joyfultoes · 07/07/2022 21:20

You were very rude. These people are campaigning for something they believe passionately in so obviously want to speak to as many people as possible. I just don’t get why people like you are nasty to strangers - because you know you can get away with it I suppose

Tromtrom · 07/07/2022 21:30

You were rude. As someone who has canvassed in the past I’d say you were unusually so. Remember that if you want a democracy then you need people to be prepared to put themselves forward as candidates. Though some people love the drama for many (especially at local govt level) it is a really brave thing and often a difficult decision to put yourself in the public domain because you want to work to do the best for your community.
