Terrified of upcoming laparoscopy and hysteroscopy

ihateendometriosis · 07/07/2022 14:57

Hello,

I have got my laparoscopy and hysteroscopy surgeries coming up within the month and I'm terrified.

I have horrendous emetophobia (fear of being sick) and I'm so scared that it's going to make me sick.

I can't not have the surgery as I'm ttc and have a hydrosalpinx to be removed as well as endo to have any chance of conceiving.

I feel really stupid panicking about being sick when I'm also in such mental turmoil regarding my fertility but I just can't turn this phobia off. I will obviously be asking for anti emetics.

Can somebody help please :(

Hi. I had a laparoscopy and hysteroscopy in September last year after trying and failing to conceive for 5 years. Other than an episode of low blood pressure shortly afterwards (likely due to me not accepting the offer of food or drinking enough), resulting in me feeling dizzy... I was absolutely fine and didn't feel sick at all. Discharged after a couple of hours, was a bit sore for a few days but all in all, nowhere near as bad as I'd imagined it to be!

Oh, and the best part of it was I then fell pregnant 2 cycles later and am now 33 weeks!

ihateendometriosis · 07/07/2022 15:15

@Eminen

Really?! Thank you so much. I feel like an absolute knob for panicking about it when getting pregnant is so important to me but I've recently seen somebody online say how they felt unbelievably sick after.

I'm so pleased you managed to conceive so quickly after aswell!!! Hopefully this will be me!!

Thank you xx

Hi. I had this years back when I was TTC. I also have PCOS and endo. I cant advise re the sickness but I was honestly fine afterwards. I ate my sandwich, drank my tea and was home not long afterwards. I didnt have any of the shoulder pain they say you can get either.
And, like Eminen, I conceived straight afterwards. My son was born 9 months and 4 days after the procedure (although he was a week early).
Good luck 💐

ihateendometriosis · 07/07/2022 15:20

@Mrschristmasqueen

Thank you 🤍🤍

I will only have one tube after the surgery (hopefully I'll have one tube left at least) so I hope I can conceive quickly too xx

Talk to the anaesthetist as perhaps she can give you an anti-emetic drug to stop any sickness.

ihateendometriosis · 07/07/2022 18:38

@Snog

Thank you. I definitely will be requesting the strongest anti emetics!

I had a hysteroscopy recently under general and was given anti sickness drug

ThirtyThreeTrees · 07/07/2022 18:45

I've had both. No sickness, no complications.

In terms of shoulder pain, I didn't have pain just every mild stiffness or tenderness afterwards which was gone with 24 hours.

Best surgery I ever had.

kitty1993 · 07/07/2022 18:45

I had this surgery a couple of years ago and they had plenty of anti sickness meds to give me if I needed them. Like a previous poster has said I had issues with low blood pressure afterward but that's kinda just my style anyway 😂 I didn't throw up at all after the surgery. I did end up staying in for 2 nights because my bladder stopped working and took a while to wake up after surgery. Make sure the nursing team are aware of your worries and they can support you with the sickness afterwards but you may not even feel sick!
All the best!

Also I'm also currently pregnant 🙌

scubad · 07/07/2022 18:45

I am emetophobic and have had to have a few laparoscopes due to having endo.

I remember the very first one I had was going to be a big operation and all I was scared about was being sick after so I completely relate to how you're feeling.

You'll speak to the anaesthetist the day of your operation and my main piece of advice is to tell them that you're emetophobic and scared about being sick after the operation and request very strong anti emetics. They will listen and drug you up as requested.

Best of luck xx

sweetheartyparty · 07/07/2022 18:47

I had about 10 years ago and i didnt feel sick at all. The only problem was not being able to pee for a while afterward. I fell pregnant 2 months later after they managed to unblock my tubes. Sadly it didnt end with our much wanted baby but it was first time pregnant after 5 years TTC. We now have a 5 year DD after IVF.
You'll regret it if you don't try. It wasn't too bad at all.

Talk to the anaesthetist as perhaps she can give you an anti-emetic drug to stop any sickness.

It is routine to give anti-emetics intra-operatively for this sort of procedure.

ihateendometriosis · 07/07/2022 21:33

Thanks everyone - a lot of positivity here and I'm amazed so many of you managed to get pregnant naturally shortly after!!

I hope if I am lucky enough to keep one tube that it's the same for me!

I agree, the regret for not having the surgery would be worse. And I have been seriously reconsidering just not having it due to this :(

X

Hi, I had a similar procedure a couple of years ago. Whilst not a diagnosed or perhaps true phobia, I am terrified of being sick. I told the anaesthetist when he came to see me before the operation. He reassured me that he could add (extra) anti emetics into the drip. He did and it definitely worked. Whilst I felt a bit drowsy for about a week following the anaesthetic (I’m one of those rare people that happens to apparently!) I never once felt sick. Definitely tell the consultant/anaesthetist. They will do what they can to help you. I hope it goes well and I wish you every success.

DoingJustFine · 07/07/2022 21:51

I don't think I've had a laparoscopy but I definitely have had a hysteroscopy. I was REALLY SCARED beforehand but it ended up being (unexpectedly) a great laugh and 100% painless. Absolutely no nausea or sickness at all.

I was singing to calm my nerves while they were up there (I know) and one of the nurses held my hand and made me a "well done for being brave" sticker afterwards.

I don't think you'll feel sick.

ihateendometriosis · 07/07/2022 22:09

@DoingJustFine

Thank you. I'm having both at the same time and will be under general anaesthetic rather than local so I luckily won't remember any of it! X

@EvianBaby

Thank you. I have had surgery previously and did wake up feeling odd but I think it was more panic and relief that I'd done it and then the fear that will I be sick now?! I wasn't x

Hi op. I work in theatre recovery. Everyone gets anti emetics in theatre but if you say to the anaesthetist that your really worried about it they will probably give you extra ones too just to be safe. Your also prescribed more for recovery if you need it and it’s the type of information that would be passed on so you’d be given more straight away. The type of surgery your having it isn’t common to be sick so try not to worry too much about it. All the best ❤️

ihateendometriosis · 07/07/2022 22:16

@KEG05

Omg thank you so much!!!!

My leaflets that I had say side effects are feeling or being sick so I assume that's just a precaution that's put on them then!

Thank you thank you ☺️❤️❤️

Hey I had this done a few months ago and it was absolutely fine! Don't worry. I felt worse after my booster vaccine!

LoonyIdea · 07/07/2022 22:37

I had a hysteroscopy and bladder investigation at the same time, last month, under a general. My only memory of it is. “Sharp scratch” as the cannula went in and then that delicious feeling of being swept into the living arms of opiates.

I woke up feeling super duper relaxed, with a slightly uncomfortable muff, and mystery knickers on. But we’ve all had nights like that.

please don’t worry. It’s totally fine. I was nil by mouth from the night before and they bumped me down the list so I was about 18 hours without food. The soup and toast afterwards was the best ever!

DangerouslyBored · 07/07/2022 22:37

I hate to say this but there is a high possibility that you will be nauseous for most of the first trimester if you are lucky enough to conceive post surgery.

ihateendometriosis · 07/07/2022 22:42

@LoonyIdea

You had me at slightly uncomfortable muff and mystery knickers 😂😂

I've had a hysteroscopy with no pain relief and a hysteroscopy and laporoscopy under GA.
I felt no nausea whatsoever with either, but like previous posters it took quite a while for my blood pressure to raise to normal levels when I had both procedures under GA.
Don't be scared.
