Just read this is another thread I was just a plain Jane.

Why does the name Jane have to be associated with the name Jane.

All the Jane's I know are far from plain?
Very negative association with the name Jane.

I guess it just rhymes 🤷🏼‍♀️

FourTeaFallOut · 07/07/2022 12:09

I haven't seen anyone be called a Plain Jane for decades.

Happyplace88 · 07/07/2022 12:09

Because it rhymes 🫤 I don’t think anyone is suggesting all janes are unattractive. Honestly OP there are bigger issues in the world.

FourTeaFallOut · 07/07/2022 12:11

Billy No Mates is hanging on in there though, poor Billy.

girlmom21 · 07/07/2022 12:11

It's not insulting people called Jane. Nobody's suggested all Jane's are plane.

girlmom21 · 07/07/2022 12:11

Or plain lol

Tinktravels · 07/07/2022 12:14

It's literally just a saying. You're over thinking it

Billy No Mates is hanging on in there though, poor Billy.

That's a good one. Never thought of that one. There aren't too many out there that I can think of.

OP posts:
Meraas · 07/07/2022 12:14

YABU. My name has some unsavoury connotations but I literally could not give a fuck what people think.

Tinktravels · 07/07/2022 12:17

Jack of all trades

Master of none

Is that also a problem?

FlissyPaps · 07/07/2022 12:18

Like the name Karen, it has negative associations, but all the Karen’s I know are far from the stereotype.

You’re overthinking this OP.

FourTeaFallOut · 07/07/2022 12:18

Moaning Minnie.

Judd · 07/07/2022 12:20

Plain Jane Superbrain on Neighbours!

suckingonchillidogs · 07/07/2022 12:20

Plain Jane Super Brain was really clever tho (and gorgeous when she took off her specs 🙄)

KrisAkabusi · 07/07/2022 12:20

He's being a Dick!

LadyVictoriaSponge · 07/07/2022 12:23

Tim Tim nice but dim!

Curiosity101 · 07/07/2022 12:24

Jack of all trades
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy
Jack the Lad
Contrary Mary
Moaning Minnie
Peeping Tom
Take the Mickey
For Pete's sake
Happy as Larry

I do think you're overthinking it OP

There was a song that came out when I was around 13/14 which had my name in it, it was sung at me none stop for months. As well as a kids show theme tune which some kids at school reworded to make it offensive - specifically aimed at me and my weight. It's just one of those things.

Gatehouse77 · 07/07/2022 12:26

Have you come across Horrid Henry - the books are full of similar rhymes or alliterations.

I have a relative with the name Biddy but she’s not old…nor bothered by the phrase.

ChagSameachDoreen · 07/07/2022 12:27

OMG. Discrimination and bigotry against Janes.

It's because it rhymes. Obviously.

anotherbrewplease · 07/07/2022 12:30

Hello @girlfriend44 !

Another slow day? Thanks for a fantastic thread with some serious pondering to it.

what if there was a prison warden called Jane? That could be really terrible all round.

ddl1 · 07/07/2022 12:33

I think it's just because it rhymes; and perhaps also because at the time when the phrase began to be used, Jane was one of the commonest names for girls.

10HailMarys · 07/07/2022 12:38

It's literally just because it rhymes. Nobody actually believes Janes are ugly.

Jane Fonda? Jane Mansfield? Jane Russell? Jane Asher? Jane Birkin? All beauties who clearly didn't think that being called 'Jane' was going to be a problem!

DownNative · 07/07/2022 12:38

It's just a handy rhyme and/or alliteration like these:

Chatty Cathy

Debbie Downer

Doubting Thomas

Handy Andy

Simple Simon

Nervous Nellie

Peeping Tom

Smart Alec

Typhoid Mary

DownNative · 07/07/2022 12:40

Randy Andy is another one.........aye!

luxxlisbon · 07/07/2022 12:41

Its just a snippy rhyme. No one thinks all Janes are actually plain or boring.
