What percentage has your gas and electric gone up by?

Outs has increased by nearly 150% overnight.

We just took this as life right now. It's happening to everyone.

However a friend of mine was paying £140 a month then like us, it went up over night but to nearly £700 😱

They have managed, after lots of calls to get it reduced to £150.

I suspect they were paying too much in the first place as there's only two of them.

But it made me think, how much is an acceptable increase at this point?

It seems ours had increased by 90%. Fun times

BarbaraofSeville · 06/07/2022 21:31

What are we basing percentages on? It's impossible to work out and compare a percentage increase based solely on the change in the direct debit amount because everyone was starting in different places due to historical tariffs, credit and debits on bills, varying charging policies between companies and differing entitlements to the various grants that are coming our way.

We used to pay £94 pm and are now paying £227 but that doesn't say anything about the percentage increase in the cost of our gas and electricity.

Bubblebubblebah · 06/07/2022 21:32

How much did people's unit pricea and standing charges risen then? Because my standing charge on electric is the biggest jump with 20p extra, making it £6 quid more than last year and kwh went up 9p each. That makes difference but not hundreds. Everyone had to have ultra cheap units. Gas has minum difference.

plsbekind · 06/07/2022 21:36

I'm not sure why or how but mine has come down from £160 to £138 with utility warehouse. I'm bracing myself for a massive leap in October and won't be able to afford much above £200 as scraping by as it is

Curiosity101 · 06/07/2022 21:44

I've estimated our bill this month will be £100 - I logged into my online account and they've estimated it'll be £147 ... the utility companies are definitely erring on the side of caution right now.

If you disagree with their estimates then you can go online, cross-check your usage and request they lower the direct debit. Obviously bear in mind the upcoming winter and any increases they've accounted for to cover that though.

Tsarina01 · 06/07/2022 21:56

My partner and I have just moved into a new flat, fully electric throughout.

Out estimated consumption is just under £70 per month right now, but I feel like this might be an underestimate.

So far I’m planning to watch the electric meter like a hawk, and act accordingly.

Ive checked the price for our KWh and I’m honestly shocked by how much electricity hasn’t gone up by since last year.

I am frankly really fortunate that my partner is on a decent wage and can afford this steep increase, but I can imagine it being extremely difficult for many families this Winter.

I’d so get behind riots, to be honest. Absolute disgrace that the government does nothing.

Housequest · 06/07/2022 21:58

No gas, no increase on the electricity yet as I’m set in a plan.

Hlglu56 · 06/07/2022 22:03

My direct debit has gone from £118 to £352! 😮 Always been in credit so just don’t understand why it’s gone up by so much but am scared to reduce it in case I have to pay even higher in October.

springisaroundthecorner · 06/07/2022 22:06

We are £300 in credit. We were paying £85 a month and we chose to increase it to £120 a month. We paid the £150 council tax payment straight into our energy account. Three adult household. Electric shower is on 3 times a day, playstation, washing machine etc. How are people getting such large bills? 🤔

What's the point of comparing amounts in £?
We all have different size houses.
A 2 bedroom flat and a 5 bedroom home would be vastly different.

Makes much more sense to think about the rise in percentage, it's not totally accurate for some of the examples you gave, but makes far more sense to compare a percentage.

Are you with British Gas?

OP posts:
Mahanii · 06/07/2022 22:15

I reduced my usage and insisted I pay for actual usage only so mine hasn't gone up.

Kite22 · 06/07/2022 22:19

357%

plugee · 06/07/2022 22:30

130%

plugee · 06/07/2022 22:32

I've consciously reduced usage too

Redglitter · 06/07/2022 22:33

I've cancelled my DD. I was paying £65 it was going up to £130. I'm now doing payg and my bill this month was £70

Pleasecouldihavesomeadvice · 06/07/2022 22:34

Ours must be really cheap?

It was £65 a month and now it’s £130.
we have got an electric (plug in hybrid) car and a 5 bed house 🤷🏼‍♀️

sosickofthisshit · 06/07/2022 22:34

Ours has gone down. Only by £5 per month, but I think we were probably overpaying for quite a while

aprofoundhistoricaloddity · 06/07/2022 22:42

5%, but then I'm in France.

StripeyDeckchair · 06/07/2022 22:42

Gas & electric have increased by 227% since the start of the year.

caringcarer · 06/07/2022 22:51

From £180 per month to £255, then £309 now asking for £400 but I have small amount in credit. Phoned Octopus and said I don't want to pay for more than I am using. They said it would rise in October. I said government money would arrive then. They agreed to put it back to £309.

GarethKeenan · 06/07/2022 22:52

From 130 a month to 286

TheDuchessOfBeddington · 06/07/2022 23:09

Ours went from 104 to 207 basically overnight

Aconitum · 06/07/2022 23:39

I've just had my June statement from Bulb so compared the first 6 months to the same time last year. The actual usage is pretty much the same as last year but the cost has gone up by 30%. (£540 to £703). I was paying £85 a month with a very small credit balance for both up until October last year but then it went up to £105 to cover the winter months. It got increased to £157 in April but I am now about £250 in credit so have reduced it to £130.
3 bed open plan semi all electric apart from CH/HW. Only two of us but here all day.

Mogs43 · 07/07/2022 00:34

Mine has gone up by 75% since April. I send monthly readings to Octopus Energy. I don't actually use a lot of electricity (am very strict with lights/ cooker/washing machine) , don't have gas and am apparently on their lowest rate - so payments are £100 a month but it was much lower before and for a one bedroom flat it feels a lot.

I haven't a clue how families on low incomes will manage at all.
