To ask what you prefer the 6 in "DD6" to mean?

Imvho it's Sixth daughter.

But I've seen it as the age, which to me becomes difficult to read in some circumstances. And I guess those MNers who see it as age rather than birth order, also get baffled in some circumstances?

Do you wish MN could agree on a standardised standardised format?

Blatantly misusing The AIBU voting facility, may I ask which you prefer?

Yabu - the number should denote birth order.

Yanbu the number should denote age.

Historically it was always the birth order if I remember correctly.

PeppaPigIsBacon · 06/07/2022 15:51

Can’t see the vote but I always read it as birth order

PurpleDaisies · 06/07/2022 15:51

This winds you up enough to start a thread about? It’s usually clear from the context or the op can clarify.

But DD(6) would be age

LimesandClementines · 06/07/2022 15:52

I don't really have a preference, 9/10 times it clear which one it is because of the context of the OP.

Soapboxqueen · 06/07/2022 15:52

dd6 sixth daughter
dd(6) daughter who is six

ShadowPuppets · 06/07/2022 15:52

I usually take it to mean birth order but I agree that context usually makes it clear. Yeh, I’d rather it was DD6 for sixth daughter and DD(6) for age, but I can’t bring myself to get terribly upset about it.

Confrontayshunme · 06/07/2022 15:52

Agree with @PeppaPigIsBacon DD(6) or DD, 6 denotes age.

Not wound up at all, but would prefer an easy read while I'm scrolling through Mumsnet.

dd6 sixth daughter
dd(6) daughter who is six

Totally agree with this.

DyingForACuppa · 06/07/2022 15:54

I am used to it being birth order, but to be honest age is more useful most of the time.

This is how I see it, yes. Flowers

I prefer it meaning age

liveforsummer · 06/07/2022 15:55

You can tell by the context - it can mean either either order or age. I use it as both and it's easy to identify which I mean but the sentence it's used in

DyingForACuppa · 06/07/2022 15:54

Yes I think histrocally it's been birth order, but most of the time she is probably more pertinent to the discussion.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/07/2022 15:56

I agree it's usually clear from the context. I wouldn't automatically assume that DD6 was someone's sixth DD as only a minority of families have that many daughters or even DCs, so it's much more likely to be about a 6 YO DD.

Even when someone says something like DD2 it's often obvious (or irrelevant) whether the OP is talking about a 2 YO or their second daughter.

Eg if they talk about an issue about DD2 at primary school, having a mobile phone or underage drinking, I'd just assume the OP was talking about an older DD who is her second daughter rather than making pointed comments of the 'your 2 YO is at school, has a phone, drinking alcohol' variety like some arses would.

It's usually pretty clear from the context.

Given newbies often don't know what CF means, think it's unreasonable for people to remember how to denote the ages and order of dc.

AnImaginaryCat · 06/07/2022 15:57

The abbreviations are ot actually a MN thing, but is general Internet slang. As far as I know the number is birth order.

Though what can you do, people balls them up all the time. I mean you get posters using DS to mean thier sister, and other mix ups.

Then there's the daft ones where people add a d before a word. (Ddog or Dcat.) Not sure what that's about!! What's the opposite of abbreviate? - elongated?

FilePhoto · 06/07/2022 15:58

It always meant birth order. I've been here a looong time and that's how it was. When I was new I observed and learnt the lingo/rules/conventions. I wish people would stick to them still.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 06/07/2022 15:58

TheGoogleMum · 06/07/2022 15:55

I agree, how often is birth order relevant to a thread?

girlmom21 · 06/07/2022 15:58

You know who the penis beaker gang are because they always pretend not to understand when the context of the post makes it clear.

Someone could start a post with 'DD6 is an only child' and someone would come along with a pedantic 'how old is she?'

peachgreen · 06/07/2022 15:59

Yeah DD6 is sixth daughter (could also be sixth child, unclear) and DD(6) is 6 year old DD.

DD6(6) sixth daughter who is 6.

I'd assume daughter age 6, to be honest.
