To ask what you prefer the 6 in "DD6" to mean?

Imvho it's Sixth daughter.

But I've seen it as the age, which to me becomes difficult to read in some circumstances. And I guess those MNers who see it as age rather than birth order, also get baffled in some circumstances?

Do you wish MN could agree on a standardised standardised format?

Blatantly misusing The AIBU voting facility, may I ask which you prefer?

Yabu - the number should denote birth order.

Yanbu the number should denote age.

Maybe people could just wrote properly, so we don't have to wonder if it's your dear son or sister that shat on the carpet.

RainCoffeeBook · 06/07/2022 16:06

Write properly, even.

PeekAtYou · 06/07/2022 16:06

DD6 is the sixth daughter.
DD(6) is daughter age 6 imo

Muphry’s law in action there. 😂

largeprintagathachristie · 06/07/2022 16:07

I thought it was age.

largeprintagathachristie · 06/07/2022 16:08

DD6 is a LOT of daughters.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 06/07/2022 16:10

My DF(84) suggested it means 6 pints of Double Diamond.

CourtneeLuv · 06/07/2022 16:11

I think it's easy to tell from the context most of the time.

gamerchick · 06/07/2022 16:13

I always read it as order of birth. Think briefly 'you've been busy' before I click. Just the way my brain processes it I think

BogRollBOGOF · 06/07/2022 16:17

I might write DS2 or DS(9) depending on my point.

Birth order can be relevant as parental decision making can vary based on the existance of siblings. Things like introducing Roblox was based on a practical best-fit of both DCs ages and their peer groups, therefore DS2 was 2 years younger than DS1. DS2 goes out to play younger because he has an older sibling to accompany him. He's more mature for his age as younger siblings often are, and sometimes changing circumstances e.g. secondary transition push me into making different decisions than I did when DS1 was of the same age.

DD6 is more likely to be a 6yo than a 6th daughter.
DD3 or 4 is more ambiguous unless very obvious from context.

KatherineofGaunt · 06/07/2022 16:29

If the post has multiple children being mentioned I prefer it to mean the order. Ages can be mentioned at the beginning.

If just one child is being mentioned then it's fine to have it mean the age, but again, establish the age at the beginning and after that just write DD.

Mythril · 06/07/2022 16:30

When I started using Mumsnet it was firmly birth order, so that is my preference. I've noticed it's slipped increasingly over the years into age, and I think it might be the dominant usage now?

zingally · 06/07/2022 16:47

I'd personally interpret that as "dear daughter who is 6 years old". But honestly, it's always clear from the context of the post (or is for me at least!) which one they mean.

Needmorelego · 06/07/2022 16:51

"My daughter who is age 6" would be better.
I find all that DD, DS, DH stuff a load of silly nonsense.

Lonelycrab · 06/07/2022 16:52

Always thought it was age. Can’t see the importance of knowing birth order, or why it would be relevant at all in the majority of posts.

dd6 sixth daughter
dd(6) daughter who is six

This is how I think it used to be.

Isthisbatcountry · 06/07/2022 16:59

I did not realise that the number meant order. Glad someone has asked the question. Wondering if my recent post specifying DD16 implied I have at least 16 children 😂😂

Cuwins · 06/07/2022 17:01

I just assumed it meant age

perimenofertility · 06/07/2022 17:38

A lot of the abbreviations on this site are annoying. Is it really so much effort to type "my sixth daughter" or "my 6yo daughter"? Similarly, why not just type my husband, partner, son, friend, etc.
