People are struggling, prices of everyday items climbing every week (more so than in other developed countries). Everyone's spirit appears to be low. The jubilee weekend raised spirits a little but only temporarily.
Yes, post pandemic fatigue is probably a factor but I can't think of a single thing this government has done that has improved the lives of ordinary working people. In fact, quite the opposite.

(Come at me Tory troll farms)

Well
No one seemed to mind being furloughed. Most were quite pleased at a vaccination too. People seem to enjoy free healthcare (personally I’d rather pay for good healthcare but that’s a different matter). There’s only so much a government can do to respond to global challenges.

Oh here we go again. Bash the furloughed. As if they had any choice in the matter.

It is not the government or Brexit. There is a war escalating in Ukraine. The Ukraine is known as the bread basket of Europe - of course prices are escalating. There has also been a pandemic... again this has had a huge effect on prices. It is not just the UK who are experiencing these issues - US inflation is at a 40 year high.

I don't understand why people are surprised that a pandemic and an ongoing war have a detrimental effect on prices.

Yes to those factors. But you're mad if you think there's no Brexit effect.

tobee · 04/07/2022 17:38

"Hardly unique to the UK. Power corrupts."

Well that's ok then. We'll have a race to the bottom.

TuftyMarmoset · 04/07/2022 17:38

Have they? I feel well. The jubilee weekend didn’t raise my spirits though, I had covid that week.

Charles11 · 04/07/2022 17:39

@Weirdwonders it's not whataboutery but a recognition of how fucked we are and probably quite powerless. So what can we actually do on a personal level? Write to mps? Go on protest marches? Look after ourselves and our communities? We might make a bit of difference there whereas we'll make none sitting by ourselves miserable and expecting government to suddenly care and improve our lives.
Big businesses, including oil and gas, have made huge profits yet we're all struggling to just be comfortable and keep up with our living expenses.

VanCleefArpels · 04/07/2022 16:37

What do you think the government should do. And how much more tax are you prepared to pay to fund it?

Plenty of money if the government chose. How many private jets have they bought & how much do they cost for example? Rising prices drive a lot of tax to the Treasury. I have lots more ideas.

tootiredtoocare · 04/07/2022 17:39

You seem to be slightly surprised. Did you really think ordinary working people would be better off under this lot? We need to stop bickering and come together - stop dividing ourselves by race/creed/colour/sexuality/whatever, and start working together to get a government that works for us and with us, rather than them and their mates profiting off us.

luckylavender · 04/07/2022 17:41

spotcheck · 04/07/2022 16:45

Jesus. Ridiculous post.

The government paid a big chunk of the population to stay at home during pandemic, rolled out the vaccine schedule quite quickly so we could open up quicker than many other countries. We have a well established welfare system. Where I’m from we have limited public transportation, and the student loan system is harsher. I could go on.
And I’m really not a Tory supporter.

Honestly though, what else do you want? I love this country, but one thing I hate is that so many people wring their hands waiting for the government/ council to sort everything out for them.

Rant over

Every government did furlough. And the UK was far from the most generous.

The Tories are not there to improve the lives of ordinary working people.

Yup. Tories care about two things and two things only.

The financial betterment of themselves and the financial betterment of their friends/families. As long as the outcome of their actions result in either of the above there is no moral, ethical, or legal line they aren't willing to cross.

That's why I always laugh at posters who claim they simply have to vote for the tories because "only they know what women is". The tories have shown time and time and time and time again their promises, stand points, and policies are there to be torn up and broken at will and I can guarantee you the second it benefits the tories to 180 on that issue they will do it without a seconds hesitation.

cormorant5 · 04/07/2022 17:43

There was a regular who kept posting about what sort of turmoil would we be in if we had not had Brexit. Would UKIP be sniping at everything at hijacking the papers and everything else.
I used to agree but not too sure now. But, EU has not put itself out much to help Ukraine has it? Macron has been a bit of a tit, that long table when he met Putin. OK Putin was in charge but why agree to release the photos?
The German leader; he was an active communist. Has he changed much.

All our problems extra to Covid and Ukraine are our own because the whole damn boiling of them are feeble Lab, Lib, Green are disappointing against these Tories.

It’s not just the pandemic, a serious war is raging in Europe causing these issues op. It is happening globally not just here.
Please keep things in perspective, it could be, and still may get much worse regardless of who is in government l.

Except it’s worse here because of Brexit. Inflation is second highest after Russia, other governments have cut taxes rather than raised them. Other governments have done more to control utility and fuel prices. There are labour issues in other countries but not as great an issue as they have here. Other countries don’t have to leave crops to rot or cull pigs due to lack of qualified staff.

Mischance · 04/07/2022 17:49

I have no truck with this wretched government. They make me sick.

But to be fair they did roll pout the covid vaccination at speed.

Nidan2Sandan · 04/07/2022 17:52

slow clap for everyone who voted for Brexit

LimpBiskit · 04/07/2022 17:57

Crikeyalmighty · 04/07/2022 16:40

@Provenceinthesummer I don't think labour with Lib Dem support could do a much worse job than the government is doing. It's not just the fact of Ukraine, it's a general vibe of 'I'm all right Jack' - I'm in Palma today- immigration a total and absolute horrendous queue for Brits- EU citizens just strolling to the egates- no waits. No forward thinking policies by UK government, no actual governing , just pandering to the faithful and saving their arse, fighting off sleaze etc. I'm very much a centreist, have lots of friends who are soft Tory's- to a man they think the gvt are useless, full of overpromoted ukippers with zero commercial sense. Personally I'm not into obsessing about the gender thing- I think transsexuals are still blokes who choose to live as a woman- I'm not going to argue about it or get into a sweat about it- it's such a minority issue that takes up far too much webspace and is hyped up by far too many - I don't care how they want to live, I don't believe in discriminating against but I do object to the cause constantly being in the media eye as opposed to say disabled or mental health or housing . I'm certainly not voting for this bunch of arses just because their views are a bit more traditional on gender

This. I agree with the government take on gender but it's a small issue compared to the damage they are doing.

carefullycourageous · 04/07/2022 17:59

I agree with you OP, I am working harder than ever and it is considerably more shit than it was a dozen years ago.

The government is not supposed to make things harder but for me they really are.

By that logic no non- Tory has or will ever be financially better off as long as there is a conservative government. You must know that’s nonsense right? Making this kind of ridiculous self evidently untrue statement does not a useful debate make.

Yes this of course, and yes I am still angry with the lying bastards who led the vote leave campaign.

And there was me thinking that the government had spent the best part of the last two years and many £billions in attempting to keep as many of us alive as possible.

Did you?
They merrily allowed the Cheltenham races to go ahead in 2020 despite being begged not to. They allowed big pop concerts in Cardiff and Liverpool to go ahead in March 2020, which were attended by people flying in from known Covid hotspots. They ignored offers from established producers of PPE in favour of giving contracts to inexperienced firms and then had to bin a load of substandard PPE. They've recently been found to have acted unlawfully with regard to people entering care homes in 2020 with the result that 20000 people died. It's an absolutely woeful record.

Ginandthings · 04/07/2022 18:14

Isn’t part of the overall issue government itself? It doesn’t seem to matter who is the party in power, mps are mostly privately educated, lots of staff, claiming expenses for everything and their salaries mean they are all so out of touch they probably don’t see most of the issues anyway!

Cakemonger · 04/07/2022 16:26

The Tories are not there to improve the lives of ordinary working people.

This. The Conservative Party originated with the goal of protecting the interests of the landed gentry and private industry. It's almost 200 years later and nothing much has changed. Their biggest achievement has been to con workers into believing that they're on our side.
