So I have had a lifetime of sadness and sometimes tears at not being able to have children and now somebody is saying I should be financially worse off too?!?!?!?!?

I hear you. In the same situation here.

You’ll still be substantially better off financially than those who have had children

How insensitive!

Yep!

Some people do not have kids because they can't afford them.

And I fucking hate the trope of childless/childfree being career driven hard nosed bitches with loads of time and money. It is bollocks.

Hivaluegirl · 09/08/2023 01:31

I have a child so don't get me wrong but people who have more than three should be taxed. the planet is overpopulated why would childess people who aren't contributing to this be taxed? Bizarre

sixthvestibule · 09/08/2023 01:44

So I get to spend my hard earned money on my spoilt stepchildren AND pay extra tax because they aren’t mine. Nah.

Well said!

Those who choose to contribute to overpopulation should be taxed more, not given handouts.

Take it from their future pension if need be.

It sounds like China, who are now panicking because they imposed a one child limit & have now realised that there won't be enough of the next generation.

Ponoka7 · 09/08/2023 08:38

@FortonServices you might be a professional but the way you devalue lower paid workers is off the scale thick. As has been pointed out you have got it wrong on educated women and you've certainly got it wrong on those who don't pursue a professional career. There's still a thought process behind having children. People who have your attitude are part of the reason why no-one wants things like care home jobs, there's no respect because it isn't degree level and you can earn as much in a supermarket. Likewise a lot of the essential jobs that don't pay over £11 an hour. Your thoughts on the lower classes is straight out of Victorian times.

So it's mandatory to view ourselves as global citizens and not UK citizens? Our government no longer works in the best interests of its citizens? How should the acceptance of immigrants then be set? Like Australia? Or do we accept immigrants with no education, poor English skills, dodgy views about women, the disabled, other religions?

This is ridiculous.

The cost of having children is insane, at least in the early years when you have to pay for childcare. I have one, I can’t afford another because I can’t pay my mortgage and £1.5k/month in childcare bills and I can’t afford to stay home either. Plenty of people may have no kids because they can’t afford it so instead of punishing them further financially maybe consider how to make having kids affordable?

But I’m from Sweden where childcare is almost free so it was definitely a shock to see how much it costs here.

Why is it that Sweden (and I believe Spain and Italy) can provide inexpensive childcare? Is it because the government funds them rather than private firms?

And where do you think the government gets the money to pay for them? Taxes. Sweden is a high tax country.

They allow high ratios of adults to children - much higher than England.

Look at the birth rates in the different countries as some of them provide inexpensive childcare as a method to encourage the birth rate to increase.

GasPanic · 09/08/2023 11:13

Cost of living is the enemy here.

People can't afford to have kids. Why - because both parents have to work to afford housing and childcare is expensive, so there is no route forwards.

Make houses less expensive to buy. Stop supporting house prices with stupid schemes like help to buy and build more of them. More houses built, more affordable as prices lower. More people will be able to buy and feel that they have the necessary security to have kids.

Overthebow · 09/08/2023 11:19

I’m not sure I agree with a tax but somethings does need to be done to address the issue. Having children is so expensive now, too expensive for many to afford to have kids. It’s a big factor for many when deciding to have them or not, and how many and birth rates are declining and population ageing. I think sorting out childcare costs and making child benefit universal again plus upping the benefit amount would be productive.

We don't need to subsidize childbearing on a burning planet teeming with 8 billion humans.

Sensible changes to immigration rules can solve any country's labour needs.
