To ask if you think crystals have any power?

You know like healing or strength or helping you with whatever power the Crystal has?

Is this just a make believe thing like astrology or do you think there is power in crystals?

I don’t think so.

But if I put a crystal on a table, does it have gravitational potential energy?

Hmm good point. And if it was a large and spiky enough crystal, the kinetic energy from it as it travelled to the ground, if accidentally knocked off the table, might well convert to painful heat and sound and erm maybe elastic energy as it collided with your bare toes. Potentially quite powerful.

Ah, I hadn’t thought of those! Excellent points!

No, but they look nice.

I can also see how they might help you think through a problem- say you've got a difficult day at work coming up and you sit down and think that what you really need is some courage so you get out your courage crystal- that might be a helpful process because you've focused on the situation and what you need to do, but it's nothing to do with the crystal. You're just using something external to aid you in an internal process.

FourTeaFallOut · 04/07/2022 07:57

No, but they're pretty and if it gives someone what they need to get through the day then, why the hell not? At least they fall to benign side of woo nonsense.

They might if they were free. Although anything that claims to heal and might delay actual medical attention isn't all that benign.

Palmfrond · 04/07/2022 11:47

Years ago I knew an, erm, “doctor” who would strap two cast iron magnets (technically crystals) to different parts of your body and pass a low current of electricity through them.
Your chakras would know they’d been well and truly spoken to. A really strange sensation.

In the 50's (I think) you could get a crystal radio that used galena. No idea how it worked.

I remember making one as a teenager! The 'cat's whisker' ( a fine piece of metal) when in contact with a piece of galena can form a crude diode which retrieves the audio signal from a radio broadcast. You had to fiddle around to get the whisker to touch the right spot to get it to work. Energy input was solely from the broadcast signal, not from the crystal.

Might be a useful thing to have in the winter if we get power cuts, though they can only pick up an AM signal.

Yes. They are awe inspiring.

They have been in the ground for millions upon millions of years.

I need you to explain to me the connection between your first sentence and your second sentence.

I don’t think so.

Yes.
And if you push it off the table it will have kinetic energy. And depending on what it lands on it may give off some kinetic mechanical energy in the form of sound waves. Also there will be a bit of thermal kinetic energy as it deforms slightly on impact.

Dancingwithhyenas · 04/07/2022 12:25

No I don’t.

OneTC · 04/07/2022 12:27

You can use them to control idiots

Also, it may trigger the expenditure of energy stored elsewhere - in the form of hopping about and yelling, "Owww, right on my ingrowing fucking toenail..."

No

Yorkshirelass04 · 04/07/2022 12:01

Yes. They are awe inspiring.

They have been in the ground for millions upon millions of years.

They are wonderful, mineralogically and visually extremely interesting and often very beautiful. Their structures and formation are glorious. Some are very old, some aren’t. “Normal” rocks are also often millions of years old. Pebbles, gravel chippings, patio slabs, cliffs, etc. All fascinating and brilliant. But in no way necessarily associated with “healing powers”.

5128gap · 04/07/2022 13:17

I don't personally think they do, no. But then neither do I believe praying to a god has any power. Yet millions of intelligent people do, with a lot more money thrown at it, and a lot more human suffering linked to it than the crystal trade.

The same amount that was in my "magic cream" pot when the children were small.

It was an old camera film 35mm plastic case with a sparkly star sticker, and sudocrem inside.
But the children were sure it healed anything, and the magic was definitely there because the cream never ran out. Oka:
I replaced it from the big tub when I'd used it.

Storing this one up for the future!

afaloren · 04/07/2022 13:41

No but I like them. They look pretty and make me happy to see them on the shelf. That’s all.

knittingaddict · 04/07/2022 13:57

It's woo nonsense.

Yorkshirelass04 · 04/07/2022 15:24

I didn't say they had healing powers.

They are awe inspiring.

I have 2 x 6ft amethyst in my living room.

I also have a crystal with water and a bubble trapped inside it which has been in place for millennia. I look at that water bubble and wonder what the world was like when it was formed.

They are very very old and were created from movement and pressure, a long way into the earth, and pretty much by accident.

Yes I know pebbles and sand and lots of other things are very old too, if you like looking at them instead that's fine.

ChrisReasBathEggs · 04/07/2022 16:19

Not sure. I'm not entirely convinced, but I doubt we know everything there is to know about science right now and there is probably a lot more to planet earth than what we currently know. You can never rule anything out 100%.

Unless you are talking about crystal meth?

I think they are powerful in that they provide some people comfort whether there is any physical effect or not.

We might not know everything, but I'm going to hedge my bets and say that just because a rock is pretty doesn't mean it has magical powers.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/07/2022 17:59

No. But as a PP says the placebo effect does work.

CrazyPavedLife · 04/07/2022 18:19

Depends what you mean by powers but quartz powers watches, so in that sense, yes.

BeautifulWar · 04/07/2022 18:22

No. I think people that believe in them reframe their thoughts though, by focusing on a particular area of their life.

BeautifulWar · 04/07/2022 18:25
