To ask if anyone else didn’t like Book of Mormon?

I went to see it yesterday and was really expecting to love it. I know many people who’ve seen it and it always gets rave reviews. The person I went with absolutely loved it.

I thought it was fine, had a couple of laughs, but I didn’t think it was a brilliant, hilarious masterpiece. It’s in our city this week and my social media is covered in people saying how it’s the best show they’ve ever seen, cried laughing etc.

Has anyone else been disappointed by it? It didn’t offend me or anything, I just didn’t think it was as brilliant and funny as it seems every other person I know does.

I think the standalone episode or was it two, that it's based on is more than sufficient. I enjoy their humour but I don't think it should be overdone. It is what it is. I enjoy South Park but this BoM is just a money-making exercise.

Thrxverd · 03/07/2022 19:24

I’m pleased I’m am not entirely alone!

Yes to the PP who said they felt like an outsider. Even at the very beginning there was a moment that I really do believe would warrant no more than a weak smile in any other show, and people were laughing out loud.

It reminded me of seeing A Comedy of Errors at the Globe once. People were howling with laughter and I had a moment of thinking ‘are you laughing because you really find it so funny, or because you think you should?’ Probably the latter now that the same thing has happened again.

Sorry, probably the former! Just different senses of humour.

Yes, really expected to like it (and some of the songs were great) but some of it was just uncomfortable rather than actually funny.

Boxowine · 03/07/2022 19:57

It was written by a team known for an extremely outrageous cartoon series in the US. The show is called South Park and it is similar to BoM, very offensive but in a juvenile way rather than satirical. I saw the show about ten years ago, thought it was hysterical but very low brow. I don't think it has aged well, I wouldn't see it again.

ChompChamp · 03/07/2022 20:11

I found it extremely funny, but it does have a racism problem (not that I think the creators are racist, but if you’re going to use it in a satirical way, you need to stick the landing and make a point - they did that with religion but not with race). I understand the book has been updated somewhat since I saw it, though.

MarshaBradyo · 03/07/2022 20:14

I didn’t love it, some humour isn’t for me

I did like the last scene when they all sang though

I don’t think there’s anyone unfamiliar with South Park, though South Park is highly satirical and political - have you watched it?

Getoffmyshoes · 03/07/2022 20:19

I thought it was great, and I don’t like South Park etc. yes, there were a few jokes that were a bit close to the bone, but I generally loved the songs and the storyline and thought it was a great performance. Definitely up there with some of the better musicals I’ve seen.

CoffeeChocolateGin · 03/07/2022 20:19

Found it really funny on the whole but I felt that it was racist in parts and made me feel uncomfortable. I am white. Would be interesting to know if those with African heritage felt similar.

tulipsunday · 03/07/2022 20:29

Went to see Book of Mormon with high expectations didn't think was great. Went to see Avenue Q with v low expectations and thought it was hilarious!

OneCuppaChar · 03/07/2022 20:33

I totally agree. For me it lacked any kind of wit. I found it pretty boring actually. 😴

Mochacino · 03/07/2022 20:33

Absolute shite. Really hated it. Not because it was out of taste or anything, I just thought it was muck. DH did too but I've slightly "broader" comical tastes and struggled to sit through it.

Have to say, @WishILivedInThrushGreen I'm in agreement with you on Les Mis altho I think Cats was worse

FitAt50 · 03/07/2022 20:33

I'm an ex mormon and also a returned missionary and I Loved it. One of the funniest things I have ever scene and the soundtrack is fantastic. What made it more funny was that everything they say about Mormons in it, is true. I remember sitting with my husband and explaining that "yes I honestly used to believe that".

Mochacino · 03/07/2022 20:33

@tulipsunday exactly the same for us at Avenue Q. It was brilliant.

OatcakeCravings · 03/07/2022 20:35

Yeah kind of with you, I thought it was alright, wouldn’t go again, wasn’t offended or anything. I thought the production I saw was really good and the singing was amazing. My DS aged 14 really liked it, so I just thought the humor was probably too juvenile for me. I liked South Park when i was young and it was new, don’t find it funny now when my son watches it.

minipie · 03/07/2022 20:36

I found it really mixed, some bits were really funny, some were quite offensive, and quite a bit of it was just a bit meh. Loved several of the songs though, I’ve often got “Turn It Off” running through my head.

HermioneWeasley · 03/07/2022 20:38

I loved it, I laughed so hard as their version of “hakuna Matata” I struggled to breathe in places

Figgygal · 03/07/2022 20:41

I laughed and Enjoyed it
I love southpark too
But its not one id see again or listen to soundtrack

doadeer · 03/07/2022 20:47

Hated it.

DH was only black person in the audience and everyone kept looking at him when they were making jokes about Africans raping babies.

And he is the biggest south park fan so don't do that whole "you're just too uptight or you don't get the humour."

Pleaseletmeconfirm · 03/07/2022 21:01

I had a very mixed reaction. I found it well done but very dated. . I found it funny in places but it was really juvenile. I definitely found some of the jokes (the joke?) offensive. Some subjects should be taboo and jokes about raping babies would fall in that category. I don't understand how it's allowed, just imagine if it been another religion

EsmeSusanOgg · 03/07/2022 21:46

It was ok. Some great performances, and some funny bits but not a classic. I think as someone else said, there's only one or two jokes that are then run with.

Avenue Q is funnier, if you want an outrageous musical.

Darbs76 · 03/07/2022 21:47

I loved it, been a few years since I saw it

Hohofortherobbers · 03/07/2022 21:54

I found it distasteful and I'm not easily offended. Wouldn't be recommending it.

MrsDamonSalvatore · 03/07/2022 21:55

Everyone has different tastes. I absolutely loved it and thought it was hilarious. Would love to see it again.
