AIBU - Aldi: How much should this have cost...?

GingerWit · 02/07/2022 20:51

I'm not sure if I should be shocked or I should have realised everything will cost more due to cost of living situation etc and I need to suck it up.

However, Mumsnetter's!

How much do you think the following should have cost?

Small tray of beef pieces
Jar of mango chutney
2 onions
Bag of wonky peppers
3 packets of microwave rice
Small, plastic container
Cheap drinks bottle
Tin of mixed fruits
2 Naan Bread's
Garlic bread
Small tray of Indian bits (bhaji and samosa x2)
Flour
Sugar

One bag of shopping from Aldi. This is also a bit of fun/tongue-in-cheek to help me get over handing over the money when it came time to pay and my daughter needed to unfurl my iron-like grip from my card and put it in the card machine for me while I stood there wondering when are my kids gonna get a job at the ages of 8,9, and 14 and buy me food instead and leave my money alone.

Alas, here I am! So...how much!? Have a guess!

(I didn't get a receipt. Daughter was too busy guiding me out of the store through my veil of tears and catatonic state. I might actually just be a tight-wod!?) Hubby works full-time, I work full-time.

Anyway!

How much!?

(Stffu, Aldi! Stffuuuuuu! hisses)

Oh shit, was I right? Aldi isn't generally cheaper than Morrisons or Asda by the way OP.

Blinkingbatshit · 02/07/2022 21:29

Wow, £219 for 3 weeks for 5 of you?!! You’re doing waaaaay better than me - does that include lunches too? I think I need to come to you for training….!!

Yeeeeears of squinty-eyeing the bottom shelf and price comparison shopping online! 😂 Even that price annoys me though! I just dislike spending money on food..instead of shoes and booze.

In all honesty, I'm also diabetic and need to be really careful on what I eat because I also have Vasculitis (autoimmune disease linked to the diabetes). Certain foods flare up my Vasculitis, if I don't eat enough I have a Hypo etc. I try and make healthy meals we can all eat, because at one point I was spending around £400-550. So I try and keep meals simple!

2 of the meals the kids really love:

Pasta, sweetcorn, peppers, and onion stirred through sweet chilli sauce. It's really nice!

Pasta, ham, chicken, red onion, peppers, sweetcorn, mushrooms, garlic passata stirred through and cheese sprinkled on top. Pizza-pasta!

I was going to say £23 ... I reckon you were overcharged on something!!

GingerWit · 02/07/2022 21:56

That's what shocks me!

OP posts:
Asmallgiraffe · 02/07/2022 21:57

£21.85

Winniewonka · 02/07/2022 21:58

I shop there every week but never buy meat so I guessed £5 for that. I reckon £32 absolute tops for food items. I think the other items cost a lot more than you were expecting.

BlancmanegeBunny · 02/07/2022 21:58

There is something wrong! Absolutely no way is that £45. Why don't you check it online????

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/07/2022 21:59

I've skipped straight to "add post"

£16.50.

Verite1 · 02/07/2022 22:00

I haven’t read thread but my rough and ready calculation is £29

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/07/2022 22:01

GingerWit · 02/07/2022 20:54

Forgot to add:

Garlic clove
3 yoghurts
Bread
Small pack of ham
Butter

Ok given the update, £24.

Bpdqueen · 02/07/2022 22:02

I guessed £18. £45 doesn't sound right id double check that might be a mistake

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/07/2022 22:03

Just seen your amount. Insane. And I shop exclusively at Aldi.

Post your receipt!

GingerWit · 02/07/2022 22:03

hatinacat · 02/07/2022 21:36

Are you sure they didn't make a mistake on the checkout?

I calculated those items for Waitrose and it came to £27.85. I didn't choose the cheapest or smallest items either.

I've never actually shopped at Waitrose, but I'm incensed to try it now!

Receipt: Yes, I should have taken my receipt. My own fault there. Won't be doing that again!

Thank you all for answering though. It was meant as a bit of fun during my not so rock n roll Saturday night!

Ok just added up everything you bought at aldi excluding bottle and tub it came to 24.80 so either you have been massively overcharged or there were more items missing from your lists

MiniDinosaur · 02/07/2022 22:06

£30

prettybird · 02/07/2022 22:08

Does Aldi have an app? I no longer need to get the receipt at Lidl as the app stores it.

I mentally came to about £35 - but that was not knowing what sort of water bottle/plastic container you'd got, not the sizes of the yoghurts. Plus I've never bought microwave rice, so don't have a clue how much that costs.

Russell19 · 02/07/2022 22:10

The Indian selection things would have been about £8 for 2 packs! People saying £15?! Where do you ship haha, every item would have been less than £1 at that price

flutterbybabycakes · 02/07/2022 22:11

That's 99% processed food. It's going to cost the earth in money and health.

TheHateIsNotGood · 02/07/2022 22:13

I guessed correctly at £45, it was the meat tray, indian tray bits and plastic container that priced it up for me.

I am not shocked by the cost, you'd need to be seriously under-informed if you were.

toastofthetown · 02/07/2022 22:15

I'd be seriously worried you've been overcharged. Obviously I don't know exactly which items you bought, but I put them into Aldi's website and the food came out at just under £20, plus you estimate another £6 for the non food items.

This.

Meat around £5.40, indian the tray £4-£5, container around £5 (yes for a small one). Yogurts at about £0.90-£1.60 a pop as you said 3 - so i guessed the fancier individual ones. The rest is all pretty standard pricing for Aldi.

You're forgetting most of Aldi stuff is just repackaged M&S/Waitrose stuff. They aren't cheap. They used to be. But they aren't any more.

Well I wasn't planning on eating the bottle and container, nor was I planning on eating it all to myself.

I'm diabetic, but also athletic...but I suppose you knew that, right?

Everything in moderation, because I don't want to be a miserable so-and-so for my family just because I have a condition which limits my enjoyment. Saturday night is...well...is my business.

Alas! I asked for the price, not a health checkup. Thank you for your utmost concern. I will endeavour to chew more grass.

Azandme · 02/07/2022 22:27

How on EARTH is that right? I do a full weekly shop for two, including a bottle of wine, plus most of your shopping list, plus much more at Aldi for that, if not less!

By more I mean enough food for breakfast, packed lunches for DD10 and me (including those fruity water bottle drinks for her) and scratch cooked dinner six days a week, most meals including meat, plus the usual staples like bread, milk, butter etc.

I'm astounded it cost that much - I honestly can't see how. Were the "Indian bits" gold plated?!
