AIBU as the mother of mixed race children to be furious that Giles Coren’s article in The Times included the phrase “fuzzy-wuzzies”?

Why did The Times even allow this to be published? I can remember when I heard this derogatory term being used as a racist insult in the playground during the late 80s. It makes me want to weep. I know Giles Coren has form where racism is concerned but FFS 🤦🏼‍♀️, it’s 2022, not 1922. This is not funny, arch satire and could have horrific consequences. He may as well have used the n word and no doubt people like him do in private company. I really fear for my young children and what they might be subjected to if this is acceptable in print.

(This is my first time posting here on Mumsnet so please be gentle! I know this issue is being discussed a lot of Twitter though and several anti-racism campaigners have commented.) Here is a link to the full article, which is behind a paywall: www.thetimes.co.uk/article/call-yourself-british-ill-be-the-judge-of-that-dwl3qp53w

I read that as though he is pillorying racist attitudes from colonial times, but I think it is crass, completely unnecessary and agree that it is offensive.

yeah like I can see what he's trying to do (I think) like a and c are supposed to be the 'wrong' choices BUT I agree totally unnecessary and

I actually hadn't heard the term used in a racist way before for me if a person had 'fuzzy-wuzzy feelings' it meant you had a bit of a crush on someone. I shall make sure I refrain from using the term in that sense in future.

Are feelings not warm and fuzzies?

SausageAndCash · 05/07/2022 11:02

It’s only racist when used as the whole phrase to refer to black people.

It is fine as in the name of a bear, fuzzy felt toy, warm and fuzzy feelings etc.

And is so outdated (hence GC using it as the presumed racist talk of a past generation) that it is unlikely to be used in contemporary language.

The GC article was obnoxious. Yes he was pillorying the racism of colonialists, but he was also, in the wider article, pillorying people trying to make the Britishness Test less racist, and in fact all anti racist activity.

The wanking in the sofa article is so hideous I think it deserves its own thread like the penis beaker one.

I had a dog that tried to hump the sofa. Vet sorted it out with a small operation. I'm convinced the world would be a better place if Giles C sought out a vet.

#lol I think it would be beneficial for mankind if Giles Coren was neutered as well as being cancelled.

Hysteria about satire aside, there are some very unwell men in the world, aren’t there?

unitedcolorsofbattersea · 07/07/2022 09:32

Yes. Coren aside, today has seen the resignation today of probably the worst of them. I’m sure Giles must ruing the fact that he’s too irresponsible and liable to making sexist and racist comments to contribute to the Twitter debates today.

@unitedcolorsofbattersea OP I think you make a valid point to draw parallels between Giles Coren and Boris. In his own articles Boris has called black Africans “pickanninies” with “watermelon smiles”, which is a similarly derogatory term to Coren using “fuzzy-wuzzies”. Also Boris has called gay men “bum boys” in print while Coren predicted that gay journalist Owen Jones would be “chasing young researchers with tight bottoms up and down the corridors all afternoon” and then tried to weasel out of it by saying he didn’t know he was gay!

www.businessinsider.com/boris-johnson-record-sexist-homophobic-and-racist-comments-bumboys-piccaninnies-2019-6?amp

It’s exactly the same sort of dog-whistle racism and homophobia that is being served up by both Johnson and Coren.
