Cinema stopping kids in suits from coming in - Minions

jackstini · 02/07/2022 16:48

DS & his friend (both 13) had tickets this pm for Minions, Rise of Gru

Like lots of people per TikTok, they dressed up in suits/ties - just for fun
Got to cinema and were told they couldn't come in because of what they were wearing

DS called me upset and DH went down to see if he could sort it. Found 5 grown men standing over them and a few other kids, shouting at them that they needed to leave and they were not allowed in. Kids felt very intimidated

No dress code visible in the cinema or on the website

DH asked if they had misbehaved and was told no, we just don't like this suit thing as some of the people on TikTok have kicked off
DH pointed out, they hadn't kicked off, just wanted to watch the film, so what was the problem. Stoney silence
He took them outside, took their jackets & ties off & they went back in 5 minutes later and were admitted by a different member of staff

Is it just me or is this ridiculous? And pathetic for them to treat kids like that

I really want to complain but wanted the MN population to vote on if you think they were BU or not

YANBU - cinema staff were out of order & I should complain
YABU - don't complain

When I was 14 I was taking ecstacy in abandoned warehouses off the M25 so this seems really fucking tame tbh!

You had low standards for Yourself didn't you .
Not much hope for your Kids with You as a Role Model

beautyisthefaceisee · 02/07/2022 21:27

Alright, no need to pile on an obviously vulnerable child.

Phyllis321 · 02/07/2022 21:27

@Clymene you are a legend for using the phrase 'chinny reckon'. 😄

I can't believe I'm reading this. The cinema is a disgrace. The staff there. Ds2 had just got back from watching it at our local cinema, nothing like this.

Sounds like she was lucky then. Because clearly there are many people on this thread who've had very different and much less pleasant experiences.

This cinema has clearly had such problems, and is trying to avoid them happening again. But yes, they should have informed people of their new rules.

GrinAndVomit · 02/07/2022 22:17

I voted YANBU until I read the comments and was made aware of this latest stupid TikTok trend.
I’ve changed it to YABU.

There’s no way your son doesn’t know what the score is with this.

JWhipple · 02/07/2022 22:19

If they do trash the cinema I imagine the staff would think "we're short staffed and I don't get paid enough to get assaulted at work". Surely easier for them to not let it get to that point.

So do you think that behaviour is okay @Hoolihan

I think there's a typo in the username...

They are out having fun with their friends. Am sure we've all done similar in our time.

Speak for yourself.

I've never ruined an event for other people and I've never trashed anywhere. Nor have my children

You?

You're blaming the cinema for hordes of stupid teenagers running riot? FFS

And @Phyllis321 - why thank you

Yes, on our way to school we used to sit on the top deck of the bus and read out/discuss at length the problem page in Just Seventeen mag. Sometimes we would shriek and leap about a bit and no doubt greatly disturbed innocent commuters.

I guess the aforementioned illegal raves sometimes drowned out Dr Who as well. Poor children.

Well done you for your unblemished record.

Why didn't/doesn't the cinema put up a sign at the entrance saying people dressed like this won't be admitted? Then you're forewarned at the door.

They probably should put a sign too but they did forewarn at the door, in person, so it wouldn't have made any tangible difference.

I would say that there's a big difference between a sign put up as a notice and 5 big blokes telling young teens you can't come in. You can do both but a sign is not aggressive. Just informative. They can let in who they want of course. But if they want future custom from the local community should be better not to be confrontational before any poor behaviour. Cinemas aren't exactly rolling in it right now I imagine.

SirChenjins · 02/07/2022 23:07

Reading out the JS problem page v groups of teenagers running around a cinema, throwing things, disrupting the film and upsetting those around them….

Yeah, not quite the same thing.

Hoolihan · 02/07/2022 23:09

It is the same thing. High spirits, the joy of being together, not really noticing people around you, being loud and inconvenient and a bit annoying, getting carried away. Like I said, teenagers gonna teenage.

SirChenjins · 02/07/2022 23:12

Nope, really not the same thing. Just as doing drugs as a child in a warehouse isn’t normal childhood behaviour.

Glencanto · 02/07/2022 23:13

But if a certain, much higher than normal level of anti-social behaviour (including trashing the room) is happening solely at showings of one movie, and specifically by teens dressed in suits, it’s hardly surprising that a cinema will take measures to prevent that.

As my mother used to say to me….”you are not the only pebble on the beach”. We shouldn’t be thinking it’s funny when people forget others around them and become loud and annoying.

saying that this is more than that, the kids are going out with the intention of upsetting others. It’s not just kids “forgetting” others. They’re intentionally doing that. As a parent I’d be mortified.

Yes of course. It's the cinema's prerogative to ban whoever they like. Just take issue with some of the ludicrous hyperbole about young people on this thread.

SirChenjins · 02/07/2022 23:21

There’s no hyperbole - just completely justified and appropriate reactions to teenagers behaving like a-holes in a cinema at a kids film.

Cornettoninja · 02/07/2022 23:23

JWhipple · 02/07/2022 22:19

I’m slightly bemused anyone can argue against that.

Teenagers push boundaries and do stuff for shits and giggles, when they get carried away with themselves they get pulled up on it and grown ups generally try to remove the opportunity.

Trend of going to the cinema in a suit? Knock yourself out. Trend of going to the cinema in a suit to act like a rock star at a party no one else present wants to be at? GTFO.

altiara · 02/07/2022 23:38

A friend went with his kids today and their were teens in suits ruining the film fur everyone and too many fit the staff to kick out. Makes sense not to let them in if they’re going to ruin the film and trash the place.
