Cinema stopping kids in suits from coming in - Minions

DS & his friend (both 13) had tickets this pm for Minions, Rise of Gru

Like lots of people per TikTok, they dressed up in suits/ties - just for fun
Got to cinema and were told they couldn't come in because of what they were wearing

DS called me upset and DH went down to see if he could sort it. Found 5 grown men standing over them and a few other kids, shouting at them that they needed to leave and they were not allowed in. Kids felt very intimidated

No dress code visible in the cinema or on the website

DH asked if they had misbehaved and was told no, we just don't like this suit thing as some of the people on TikTok have kicked off
DH pointed out, they hadn't kicked off, just wanted to watch the film, so what was the problem. Stoney silence
He took them outside, took their jackets & ties off & they went back in 5 minutes later and were admitted by a different member of staff

Is it just me or is this ridiculous? And pathetic for them to treat kids like that

I really want to complain but wanted the MN population to vote on if you think they were BU or not

YANBU - cinema staff were out of order & I should complain
YABU - don't complain

Minions is a kids film. Why do loads of teenage boys suddenly want to go and see it unless it's to cause trouble?

And chinny reckon that it's just a coincidence they picked that film while they happen to be wearing suits @Daisypod

I don’t like the stereotyping in this post. DS has turned 13 recently and asked DH only today if he could see this film this weekend. Kids his age have grown up with the Despicable Me/Minions films. DS wouldn’t dream of causing trouble in a cinema and genuinely wanted to see the film. Boys don’t suddenly become sociopaths the minute they turn 13 you know. Many are still quite childlike. I see OP’s DS is only 13.

Having said that, DH’s response was ‘I wouldn’t bother, it looks rubbish’.

I'll give it a go to help you out understanding.
I think I know what you are trying to say, thank you, and you went to special trouble to emphasis your post with italics^^ and bold text. In my son's case (he is 14 and enjoyed and still watches the Despicable Me films occasionally) he and his friends were looking forward to the film and decided to dress up to be 'ironic' before the TikTok challenge to cause disruption came along and ruined it. They had planned to cheer at the end but stay quiet throughout the film. So he will be going but not now in a suit.

It's nice to see some other people on here not putting all teenagers in the same category.

@eastegg - I am the mother of a 15 year old boy. Possibly 13 and 14 year olds might be going to see it unironically but I can promise you that year 10 and 11s are totally taking the piss.

But not screech and throw bananas.

Children have been dressing up to go to the cinema for decades. I remember wearing a Snow White dress to go and see Snow White. But it wasn't associated with preventing other people from enjoying the film. That's the difference.

Oh fair enough. I wasn’t aware of any social media trend until now.

I went to go and see Shrek with my mates as a teen with pure intentions. Had one of the Toy Story films come out around then I think we’d have gone to see that as well, because like people have mentioned in the those are films we grew up with.

Actually Shrek was not even a franchise we grew up with as I think we had already started high school when the first film came out. I distinctly remember us going to see one of the sequels in the cinema.

If there’s riots in the cinema because of being trashed then I would cancel all showings of minions that should put a stop to it. I have been in cinemas with my son with kids throwing popcorn and drinks everywhere it’s no fun for the staff or the people watching the movie. In future go with your kids and keep an eye on them and if they are well behaved then they are not the problem it’s the staff blaming your kids for other kids behaving badly. If they act out whilst your there then your kids are part of the issue. Apologies if your kids are well behaved if so put in a complaint to the cinema. I am glad I have read this post as was going to see this movie. Will now wait till the last day and will get a ticket for the early morning showing when most teens are still in bed. Let’s see what happens when I go see this movie.

“we just don't like this suit thing as some of the people on TikTok have kicked off“

replace the suit with for example black/gay/autistic people and it’s pretty much tarring all people who wear suits/black/gay/autistic people with the same brush. I though we as a society had overcome this behaviour!

Absolutely terrible comparison.

No where near the same.
The cinema have risk assessed a situation and to reduce a known risk they have put a measure in place.
The people arent banned from watching the film. However on this occasion they are saying they dont want people wearing suits. They can still go and see the film.

I don't even know where to begin with this. I can't believe that anyone would write that sincerely. Believing it to be the case. You wouldn't be able to function on a day to day basis with that level of thinking.

sashagabadon · 04/07/2022 07:16

Young teens are going to see it as they grew up on Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2. It’s nostalgia. Not dissimilar to a load of middle age men going to see Top Gun 2

Fizbosshoes · 04/07/2022 07:20

My teen DD (16 next month) is going with sone friends this week. I'm pretty sure they are going because they want to see it....?

Proudboomer · 04/07/2022 07:41

There is a new craze on TikTok called the minion cult. Millions of teens have joined in and just if a small percentage of these take it to far and cause havoc in the cinema than it is no wonder that the staff are having to take measures to not only protect other film goers but their own staff and buildings.
you should direct your anger where it is due and that isn’t the cinema but those who spoil it for everyone.

In a strong field this is quite possibly one of the most stupid things I have read on here.

zizza · 04/07/2022 07:54

I voted YANBU but I should've learned my lesson by now and waited until I'd read a bit more! The situation could probably have been handled better by the staff, and hopefully they're now displaying signs like the one someone posted above. It's a shame some people are spoiling it for others though with this latest "trend"

With 20 other kids dressed in suits?

My daughter is Y10 and she is desperate to see it. She's going with her dad and Y6 sister as well so not just to cause havoc. Like a PP said I think it's nostalgia as they grew up with despicable me. We saw the first minions film at a drive in last summer.

QuillBill · 04/07/2022 08:03

With 20 other kids dressed in suits?

Or 349 kids dressed in suits. I can't understand how posters are unable to separate the two activities.

One is going to the cinema to watch a film.
One is going to the cinema to be daft.

You're likening decades long struggles with equality to some teenagers who are not allowed to watch a film in a suit? Just...wow. how to say I'm an able bodied while person without saying I'm an able bodied white person

Ah sorry, I didn’t realise that teens had suddenly grew suits that are now a permanent part of who they are.

How awful, they’ll have to shower with Persil now.

Thoughts and prayers

jadeyfly · 04/07/2022 08:42

My point being that teens are being judged for the behaviour of the minority, just for how they are dressed
