To think it is wrong to smoke and breastfeed?

My friend thinks this is ok and I really really don’t! Surely the toxins get into the milk?

Of course it is wrong to be smoking when you have a baby let alone breastfeeding. How anyone can think you are unreasonable is beyond me.

same

KevinTheKoala · 02/07/2022 15:30

Yes it's best not too smoke at all, but realistically it is an addiction that is hard to quit - speaking as someone who smokes (and yes I'm aware I'm disgusting, please spare me the comments on what a rubbish mother I am) it was so easy not to smoke while pregnant, much less so once the baby was born and I needed an escape from my overbearing in laws, overly critical partner and two small children during in lockdown while dealing with severe depression and suicidal thoughts and no support. So I smoked outside, never around my children, I washed my hands and took off my jumper before breastfeeding my baby but I did continue to breastfeed her because it was still better than formula, and I would have had to hold her in the same way even if she was having a bottle.

In an ideal world nobody would smoke, but in an ideal world nobody would have untreated mental illness, unsupportive families and othed stressors that make it hard to give up unhealthy vices.

Suedomin · 02/07/2022 15:33

It's better not to smoke at all, presumably they gave up while pregnant? If so why start again.
But if for some reason someone can't give it up it's still better to breast feed than to give formula

SexyLittleNosferatu · 02/07/2022 15:34

What would you like the punishment to be? Or is this thread reward enough for you?

SnowWhitesSM · 02/07/2022 15:35

Don't beat yourself up @KevinTheKoala I gave up when pregnant and then started again, although I didn't breastfeed so have that shame to contend with 🙄

That’s what the little dent in their head is for, tapping your ash in.

😎😄😁

Snowflakes1122 · 02/07/2022 15:44

I can only think the 42% that said YABU are smokers.

YANBU. Smoking when you have children generally isn’t great for their health.

Thanks, you fed your baby - and had to contend with sterilising and making up bottles at night - no shame in that 😊. I formula fed my first - breastfed the second purely because I'm lazy 😂

Somethingsnappy · 02/07/2022 15:55

Smoking of course, is not ideal, but as pp have said, the advice is that if you do smoke and can't give up, breastfeeding is better than not breastfeeding. Mostly because smoking is a big risk factor for SIDS, and breastfeeding is a protective element in that department.

It's not OK. My sister smoked through her pregnancy and while breadt feeding and acted shocked when my niece had breathing problems and asthma.

Plenty of people have asthma without being exposed to smokers as baby's

Yeah it's disgusting, almost as bad as smoking while pregnant.

Yes, disgusting.

They probably didn't give it up.

@FourTeaFallOut not sure how close you can get a bottle fed baby to your skin when feeding..? The whole bottle thing gets in the way of that..

What about the arm you’re holding them with? Or the hand your using under their chin to wind them after a bottle? Your handling a baby exactly the same wether your breastfeeding or bottle feeding.

DaphneeBridgerton · 02/07/2022 16:42

waveyourpompoms · 02/07/2022 15:06

Of course it’s not ok. Just like breastfeeding and drinking alcohol is not okay.

But the mothers who do it don’t care about their baby as long as they get their fix 🤷‍♀️

Do you HONESTLY think it is that simple? That Mothers who smoke simply do not care about their babies? Is that the same for mothers who bring babies into unstable/broken relationships? Who feed their kids junk? Who let their kids sit in front of a TV screen all day? Do you not see there is a wide spectrum when it comes to parenting and not everybody can be bloody perfect?

bakewellbride · 02/07/2022 16:45

Parents shouldn't smoke at all imo.

WingingItSince1973 · 02/07/2022 17:00

Smoking anyway while you have kids is a selfish habit. The amount of poor kids I used to see at school which reeked of their parents smoke. Breastfeeding and smoking is disgusting. Yep am judgemental when it comes to this.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/07/2022 14:46

I read the thread titles thinking you meant the risk of getting fag ash on the baby's head. 😬

You joke, but my grandma didn’t like breastfeeding and used to treat herself to a ciggie while doing it. She also said the best smoke she ever had was on the delivery bed with my newborn mum in her arms.
