This cannot be true can it mumsnet?
If it is true then what is going on at mnhq
Aibu to be shocked by this
Or do fellow mumsnetters think it is ok to work for free
If the story is true

Yes @GoldenSongbird , if I wanted to be employed, with all the obligations and restrictions that involves, then I'd apply to be an MNHQer. I don't want to though.

(And Flowers to @Sweetpeasaremadeforbees and others who expressed appreciation)

WE DON’T MIND VOLUNTEERING!

sheesh…

and we are very good at it, thank you very much!

see you all later tonight! Wink

We just browse Mumsnet as any other user would - there is absolutely no pressure to be “on duty” and if there’s trouble down t’mill, we swoop in and have the power to hide threads and replies.

it’s not a huge job (apart from when there is a troll making mischief, or an invasion of spambots) but it’s interesting. I’ve been on Mumsnet for many many MANY years and am able to take a step back from the fray to deal with problems overnight.

no, I’ve never wished I was paid.

Thanks so much for replying, so it doesn’t sound hard work as such, it’s more as I said just the general presence that’s important.

Goodness! This thread is certainly bringing out the trolls, GFs and bitchploppers.

I’ve got to know, what is a bitchplopper?!

Apparently it doesn't matter that you don't mind. You have to be paid even though you don't want to be, you have to have a contract of employment and have a pension, annual leave allowance, annual performance development reviews and everything employment involves. Anything else is disgusting.

GoldenSongbird · 01/07/2022 13:48

@NiteWotcha and @EineKleineNachtwatcher thank you for everything you do Flowers and Gin and Cake

This thread isn't really about you or about employment rights. It's about posters with no knowledge of either trying to kick MN.

But it's worth it as a reminder to say thanks to you especially in light of how busy MN trolls are at night Grin --and during the day--

Somebody who arrives with a single bitchy/sarky comment on a thread and then disappears from the thread usually.

That seems a really over the top response, I don’t think people are saying that they have to have all of those things, just wondering why Mn choose to pay the day staff but not the night staff. It’s worthy of a discussion I think. If this site was non profit then that’s very different, but as they’re not, I do wonder why it’s this way.

Anyway it’s brilliant to hear from actual night staff and they sound happy with doing this on a voluntary basis. It does seem like they do a very valuable job tbh.

Sparklingbrook · 01/07/2022 13:51

My only about Nightwatch is that when you post on the Nightwatch thread to get them to look at something it's basically trollhunting, visible to all. Confused

Sorry if it’s seemed I don’t appreciate you by arguing that you shouldn’t be paid. I definitely do!! It’s great that you’re around to keep the place in check overnight so a thank you from me (as someone who is around a lot at night!)

(I just think sometimes a nice bit of casual purpose is good for the soul and your occasional evening task shouldn’t be moulded into a fixed job with fixed responsibilities.)

Yes, hide it until MN can take a look at it. Grin Then they'll get your contract written up and you can have your medical. Grin

I've thought the same when I've done that. Luckily Mumsnet mods have used common sense in not disciplining for that.

Sparklingbrook · 01/07/2022 13:55

Pleaseletmeconfirm · 01/07/2022 13:56

I'm sure the volunteers are happy to volunteers, it be really weird if they weren't . I can see it would be interesting. I regularly report troll posts so am also happy to help Mumsnet to run smoothly and be a positive place to hang out.

However, I still think that Mumsnet should have paid moderators overnight. It is an essential role and one that should be paid. There is no reason that I can think of other than maximizing profit why they won't make it a proper paid position.

QueSyrahSyrah · 01/07/2022 13:58

If the volunteers are happy to volunteer then I don't see an issue? I volunteer at some sporting events that are staged by a small profit making events company; they have a core of full time paid staff, and a pool of ad-hoc volunteers. I choose to volunteer as the events are beneficial to the community, and I also take part as a competitor in other events that couldn't be staged without willing volunteers, so it goes full circle.

If I didn't want to, then I just wouldn't.

Hi @Sparklingbrook That’s sort of true - especially when it’s actually not under our remit to hide something. I sometimes then hide the offending NW thread so it doesn’t spiral any further.
but in general, it’s the nature of NightWatch that it’s always a TAAT!

It's starting to get funny how determined some posters are to misread and misrepresent. It's like dealing with toddlers ... but without the cuteness and with seemingly less self control and object permanence. Maybe MN could do a sticky post at the top explaining who, what, why a Night Watch Wink
