Is anybody else 30+ and still has spots?

I had tons until around the age of 27, especially on my chin, but luckily they've reduced quite a lot.
However I still have some now at 31. I always have a small cluster on my chin which I guess is hormonal, but I still get a few others too. Used to get cystic acne which luckily I don't anymore, but I have a lot of little pimples.
I take the contraceptive pill, and I use products that are supposed to help them but still there. Anyone else? It's pretty frustrating..
I still get more around my period, and when I haven't slept well.

I had them quite bad and finally got put on roaccutane in early 30s which was amazing!
Now I just seem to get the odd big hormonal spot on my chin each month which I can live with. I’m on Yasmin and scared to come off the pill at any point as worried my skin will go mad.

KatherineofGaunt · 30/06/2022 21:52

I have them now at the age of 40. My skin was much clearer (not completely clear plus I have rosacea) all through adulthood until after I gave birth. Now I have quite a few around my mouth and nose and have done for 3 years. It's infuriating! I am trying a regime of face wash, a spot gel and an Acnecide moisturiser and they're better, but still obvious.

April90 · 30/06/2022 21:53

Yup I still got spots and I'm 32. They aren't as they used to be though. Cetaphil has really helped but I've never had super clear skin

onlyconnect · 30/06/2022 21:54

I'm 54 and still get the odd one

Goggle787 · 30/06/2022 21:54

It's hormones isn't it..so frustrating. I wouldn't mind the odd one at all but these clusters and small ones all over are annoying.
I will consider speaking to a gp.

Hate to say this, but 64 and yes, still the acne around the chin always in the same place and nothing has worked.

WingBingo · 30/06/2022 21:56

I have had acne for 30 years.

I did a course of Roaccutane 2 years ago and it’s changed my skin massively.

I still get the odd one but my face is so clear! No more blocked pores or blackheads and way less greasy.
Roaccutane is extreme though, there are lots of other treatments to try, go see your GP

Octomore · 30/06/2022 21:57

I take comfort in the fact that oily skin does not wrinkle quickly. I may have blemishes, but by God I look young for my age!

Goggle787 · 30/06/2022 21:57

Is Roaccutane prescribed easily or are GPs reluctant to do so?

OP posts:
April90 · 30/06/2022 21:59

@Octomore same here actually so at least there'a 1 positive

whatabloodyjoke · 30/06/2022 22:00

Yep, I still did post 30. Then had 2 babies and it seems to be better now. Something hormonal must've changed. Too drastic a measure for you to take 😂?

I am still prone to them a bit but much less. I've been using Skin+Me stuff for the last 2 months and it seems to be doing the trick. Tbh, I don't know if it's actually that stuff or the fact that it's a cleansing and moisturising routine (nothing fancy that takes forever) that I'm actually sticking to.

Fluffygreenslippers · 30/06/2022 22:01

Yes I used to break out when I ovulated, sometimes cystic, sometimes just smaller ones. My chin is all scarred from years of cystic acne. When I was pregnant I had a huge cystic acne breakout upon entering the 2nd trimester; 4 huge, painful cystic spots. One was so large it ended up coming to a head four separate times. I’ve not long given birth and i’m waiting in trepidation to see how my skin reacts.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 30/06/2022 22:01

Yes. I have atypical acne rosacea, so general redness plus papules rather than pimples.

I find it really upsetting. I remember being a teen and watching tv shows like crime dramas and wondering how police officers managed to wake up and show up to a crime scene without having their faces bright red.

I’m taking lymecyline on the advice of my dermatologist consultant and have been insanely lucky to be approved for laser therapy as well. However that won’t help with the general redness.

Flockameanie · 30/06/2022 22:02

Yup. 46 here and skin been a bit crap since I was about 30. Not acne, but hormonal spots. I started Dermatica a few months ago and the improvement to my skin has been quite dramatic. Took a bit of fiddling with the prescription to get it right.

Pixiedust1234 · 30/06/2022 22:03

I'm 50+ and still get them. Kept getting told that they would go with be8ng on the pill, then a different pill, first pregnancy, then breastfeeding, then second pregnancy....then menopause. The only one left is death I guess.

whatabloodyjoke · 30/06/2022 22:05

Oh, just remembered something that worked really well for me in my 20s. Megadosing on vitamin B5. Have a read up on it. I used to buy pouches of the powder from a protein shake website. It seems like so much to take, seem to recall it was something like 0.12g per kg of your weight. So I weighed 60kg and took 7.2g of the powder mixed with squash. It's a bit minging but you get used to it. As soon as I started it was like my skin just stopped producing oil and I didn't get a single new spot. Honestly it felt like magic. Can't actually remember why I stopped!

HeleenaHandcart · 30/06/2022 22:07

I’m the same. Still get spots, but on the other hand at 46 I have no lines round my eyes yet or creases in my skin.

I had painful cystic acne for years in my late 20's and early 30's, mostly on my chin. I was prescribed long term antibiotics and a retinoid gel, which helped but not enough. I asked to change my contraceptive pill (to Yasmin) and now my skin is mostly clear. I do get the odd spot but only occasionally. It's made a huge difference.

mrsfoof · 30/06/2022 22:13

Yup. I'm now at that lovely time of life (40s) when I still have spots but also have wrinkles / fine lines. Lucky me Smile

SpotlessMind88 · 30/06/2022 22:17

i do and I'm 33. I had bad acne as a teen and it never really went away. I tried all the creams and lotions but I'm allergic to most of the main ingredients in acne cosmetics so it made it worse. Went on antibiotics which worked but then my body got used to them. Went on the pill which helped but didnt work on the spots on my back.
i ended up taking Roaccutane which cleared a lot up, but i still get spots and since i came off the pill my spots have come again, but i dont plan on doing anything now. I've accepted them lol
i wouldn't advise going on roaccutane, i had to get it through a dermatologist but there are a lot of side effects including extremely dry skin, suicidal tendencies and birth defects. Its banned in a lot of countries including America

WonderingWanda · 30/06/2022 22:26

Yes, I hate my skin.

Mandatorymongoose · 30/06/2022 22:48

Lymecycline helped mine a lot. Roaccutane cleared it completely.

Roaccutane (isotretinoin)can only be prescribed by dermatology. You have to use 2 forms of contraception and have monthly pregnancy tests, they won't issue the next month's prescription without a negative test. It is taken for around 6 months usually. Common side effects are incredibly dry skin, lips, dry eyes, dry nose - can cause nose bleeds, muscle aches and pains and headaches. Dose is based on your body weight. There have been links to mood side effects, including depression and suicidal thoughts so anyone with history of these needs carefully monitoring.

I took a low dose over a longer time due to my medical history and mostly was achey and had really chapped lips but no other issues.

violetbunny · 30/06/2022 22:51

Definitely see a GP (or a private dermatologist if you can afford it).
Also I found that some contraceptive pills work better than others at managing my skin, I'm currently on Yasmin which works well and I now only get the occasional spot (I'm 40).

minipie · 30/06/2022 22:54

I’m 42 and had acne since 12 or so.

Tried everything including Roaccutane twice - it helped but didn’t clear it.

Definitely hormonal, I have PCOS and the spots come in a monthly pattern.

I’m on Dianette pill and Epiduo cream which help keep it controlled but I still have several spots at any time.

I’ve pretty much given up tbh. On the plus side I’m a complete ninja with concealer.
