Where have all the bananas gone?!

MiniMoosey · 30/06/2022 18:55

My husband and I have noticed that banana flavoured things seem to have disappeared from shops.

There very rarely any banana milkshake in the fridges, if there’s any banana nesquick it’s the small pot and not the big tubs. Banana yoghurts are rare, banana custard seems to have disappeared… also having trouble finding banana essence.

Have we missed some great banana conspiracy?! Has anyone else noticed this?

Yes we have no bananas was a song from nearly 100 years ago so it's hardly a new phenomenon. My dad never even saw a banana until he was about 10.

MiniMoosey · 30/06/2022 20:22

We’ve got plenty of real bananas! But as pp said, it’s just not the same as the same as the synthetic flavour. I’m wondering if there is something in the flavouring that has been disallowed

I like them too, @RubyJam - they seemed to have plenty in our local Sainsbury's. Also the ones with broccoli florets and other veg, which I like.

MammaWeasel · 30/06/2022 20:23

@pixiedust1234 Banana toffees aplenty on ebay for you, if you're in the uk

HMSSophia · 30/06/2022 20:24

"Yes, we have no bananas, we have no bananas today" tra la la

I’m not sure that banana flavour has anything to do with actual bananas.

Random fact from a podcast.

Until the 1950s the main variety of bananas were Gros Michel bananas. These were mainly wiped out by a disease and we now have Cavendish bananas. The synthetic banana flavour was based on the Gros Michel which why it doesn’t taste banana-ery to today palate.

This has nothing to do with this thread but I find it interesting

Maireas · 30/06/2022 20:28

@Westnorwood - now that is interesting.

RubyJam · 30/06/2022 20:29

@Maireas , yes I saw the bags of mixed cauli and broccoli but no broccoli on its own.
Its not available online either
I bought fresh broccoli but the heads are tiny , one head used to do two meal sides now it’s only one.

The big bags of frozen are so much better value

Maireas · 30/06/2022 20:32

They are. I don't know if you can get to Sainsbury's, but ours had large bags. Co-op too. Maybe just luck.

RomeoMcFlourish · 30/06/2022 20:34

Banana flavoured everything is the dream! OP, you clearly have excellent taste. Also agree that a banana yazoo is the best hangover cure. I can never find banana yoghurts in these parts, drives me mad!

Thank you but I don't trust ebay for consumables or electrical items. Unless you know of a reputable company that trades on there?

Op...my daughter brought home a pack of mixed maoms (?) today and there was a banana flavoured chew in it (as well as other weird flavours like coconut and mango).

I don't know if this is any good

@Westnorwood that's the kind of fact I love

Oooh I did not know that. How fascinating!

Fairislefandango · 30/06/2022 22:17

Because bananas = nice and banana flavouring = Envy (not envy).

BogRollBOGOF · 30/06/2022 22:23

OP clearly never had that anti-biotic as a child.

While actual bananas are fine, banana flavoured anything takes me straight back to having ear infections.

OwlinaTree · 30/06/2022 22:29

I really craved that synthetic banana flavour when I was Pg with my son. I knew all the shops that sold banana yazoo and which only sold chocolate and strawberry! 😂
You need these bad boys...

Where have all the bananas gone?!
Mum2jenny · 30/06/2022 22:31

Plenty of bananas dying in my kitchen. I needed 2/3, had to buy around 8 in a bunch. May make a banana loaf tomorrow if I can be arsed!

I had not realised that all our bananas came from the EU!

They used to.

The EU has a deal with the main banana producing nations to buy the best bananas at the best price. Now, the U.K. is like the rest of the world and has not only to pay more, but also only gets to buy what the EU doesn’t want.

Amazon has banana Nesquik, Crusha and Yazoo.
Fill your banana boots!
I wonder like a pp said, its cos its unpopular?
Banana Nesquik has been my favourite since the 70s.

CuteOrangeElephant · 01/07/2022 06:02

Now I really want a McDonald's banana milkshake.

Vampirethriller · 01/07/2022 06:07

Banana is the best flavour! I can get banana essence in my local international supermarket type place and corner shops here have banana milkshake.
I used to love banana toffos.

Numbat2022 · 01/07/2022 06:14

Maybe because everyone who is now old enough to be responsible for food shopping remembers banana flavoured antibiotics in the 80s 😫and won't go near the stuff.

greenacrylicpaint · 01/07/2022 06:16

I'm not in the uk but could not get fresh bananas this week.

I loved that medicine. It was the only bonus of having tonsillitis.
