To wear converse to my graduation?

inhellyesterday · 29/06/2022 14:00

I am graduating next Thursday. Would I be unreasonable to wear black platform converse with a black dress to my graduation? Getting mixed opinions from people saying it's fine to others saying too casual.

I just want to be comfortable and I always am in them.

Wear the converse. Definitely.

Lovemypeaceandquiet · 29/06/2022 14:02

I’ve had people wearing Doc Martins at my graduation, so why not?

Nothingfallingdowntoday · 29/06/2022 14:03

Its your day and you worked hard for it. Wear what you want and enjoy the moment.

Congratulations btw

Squiblet · 29/06/2022 14:03

Sounds cool, I say go for it

MeMe3Spoons · 29/06/2022 14:05

You should wear whatever you want to, it's you graduation! Congratulations!

Clovacloud · 29/06/2022 14:08

I wore them to mine 25 years ago LOL! Go for it you’ll be comfortable :)

PeanutButterOnToad · 29/06/2022 14:10

I wore leather trousers to mine, apparently female graduates had to wear skirts (1985) whoops!

Rumplestrumpet · 29/06/2022 14:13

I wore flip flops 20 years ago! Wear what you like. Congratulations!

KarenOLantern · 29/06/2022 14:16

Personally I'd say it's too casual. But the main issue is, will your uni allow it? I wouldn't have been allowed at my graduation as we had to wear suits for men and smart black and white office-style attire for women, with smart shoes, but I know some unis are more lax. I had quite an alternative fashion style when I was a student, but I'm glad I've got graduation photos where I look "normal" and smart.

You say it's for comfort... now this is going to sound proper old granny but please bear with, I'm only 33 so hopefully not totally past it... presumably after graduation you'll be hoping to get some sort of professional job where smart shoes are needed... Clarks honestly do the most comfortable smart shoes in the world. I'd go to Clarks and invest. I've got a pair of nice looking smart flats and a pair with a small (but very comfortable) heel from there and they were well worth it.

Nobody is going to be looking at your feet.

Congratulations!

Is there a published dress code? If so, follow it, otherwise wear what you like.

Converse look much more stylish that lots of tottery shoes I have observed tottering across the stage. We give up so much of our power, when we totter about in shoes disigned for everything other than being goood to walk in

Hophop26 · 29/06/2022 14:21

Yes definitely wear them!! Brides wear them with wedding dresses, you can definitely wear them to your own graduation, it is a celebration of you after all

Actually, given that the graduand's outfit is covered by an academic gown. And they often cross a stage above the audience, feet and shoes are very visible and can be a focus.

I've watched 100s of graduations (was part of my JD for some years) and Converse would be in a minority but not remarkable. Just make sure they are clean.

Congratulations and enjoy your day.

Bobbins36 · 29/06/2022 14:29

Wear whoever you wan to, you’v earned it! Congratulations and enjoy 🎉👩‍🎓

pag2020 · 29/06/2022 14:31

Wear wellies if you want to! It's your day! Enjoy it! Congratulations 🎊🎉

InChocolateWeTrust · 29/06/2022 14:34

What does your university require? There was a smarter dress code at mine, converse absolutely wouldnt have been allowed.

snoochieboochies · 29/06/2022 14:35

Is it allowed? Do you want to?

Yes to both?

no brainer. Stop seeking other people's approval to be yourself. You can't buy that for 9K a year.

BurningTheToast · 29/06/2022 14:39

If it fits with your university's dress code then go for it. Some are more traditional, some aren't, although I wouldn't describe them as 'lax'. DS is at one of the 'ancients' and they're told to wear whatever they feel comfortable in.

Enjoy your day and congratulations!

This, you need to check the dress code. Ds's has a strict dress code and this wouldn't be allowed

10HailMarys · 29/06/2022 14:57

Check the dress code just in case it literally specifies 'no trainers' or something, but otherwise, absolutely go for it! It's important that you're comfortable and feel like yourself.

I graduated in the 90s and there were plenty of Doc Martens at my graduation ceremony. I can't actually remember what shoes I wore, but they definitely wouldn't have been smart heels!

Also, most people will just be looking at each other's comedy hats. When people are wearing tassled mortarboard caps it's quite hard to notice anything else.

FilthyforFirth · 29/06/2022 14:59

I wore converse on my wedding day (pretty bridal ones!) So I am a yes for graduation. Be comfy!

I'm 46 and I work in what would definitely be considered a 'smart professional job'. Converse with a dress or trousers is a regular look for me, and totally normal in my office.

Mariposista · 29/06/2022 15:06

Congratulations!

I would definitely check your university's dress code, and not try and push boundaries and risk being told to change or not graduate (stressful and unnecessary). Only saying this as this was the case for me (albeit 10 years ago). We were given a fair, quite flexible dress code (black and white, could be skirt, dress, trousers, any style but had to come just above the knee) and some clearly footed it, came wearing green, pink, mega short dresses and were told they had to find something else or they wouldn't be allowed. They ended up racing home and coming back all sweaty - not what you want. If there are no specifications, go for it - I bet you will look amazing! Enjoy your day!

1dontunderstand · 29/06/2022 15:10

100% wear them. As long as they are clean and not too battered. If they are what you want to wear because they are you/comfortable. Are there any rules that say you can’t!

btw, if you wear something uncomfortable, that is all you will remember. I’m giving you this advice as a 44 year old who has lots of memories of ‘big’ occasions, and I can definitely remember every one that I wore uncomfortable shoes and went home barefoot.
now I wear appropriate, and comfortable, footwear!

PoleFairy · 29/06/2022 15:14

I wore them on my wedding day all day. Do it
