To wear converse to my graduation?

I am graduating next Thursday. Would I be unreasonable to wear black platform converse with a black dress to my graduation? Getting mixed opinions from people saying it's fine to others saying too casual.

I just want to be comfortable and I always am in them.

Did you miss the bit I quoted, which stipulated: Dress code is 'formal wear and comfortable shoes' ?

Of course there are other places and ceremonies where formal dress code is not required. But I had thought it was pretty clear I was responding to a point which does stipulate 'formal'

No, I didn’t miss it, I’m perfectly able to read. But the term formal does not have universal connotations. The likes of Oxbridge, Edinburgh etc might understand formal attire as being black and white, buttoned etc, but that simply isn’t the case everywhere. I spent the past 25 years working in universities (4 RG and 2 post-92) and in none of them is ‘formal’ interpreted on that way - it simply means smart(ish).

DS is sue to graduate from Nottingham Trent on Friday, he is very alternative in his style and was never going to wear a business suit. He has bought a mint green suit and is planning on wearing a plain T Shirt underneath. It looks very smart and matches his personality 100%. Do you think this will be allowed? When I graduated in the early 1990s it was business dress or nothing else. The dress code states no Jean's, trainers or T Shirts but I think this means casual wear. We saw a shirt today that he liked but the suit is almost designed to be worn with a plain top as opposed to a shirt.

I graduated two weeks ago and there was a really mixed turn out, some people went full dress and heels etc but many others wore a dress with converse or doc martens etc so I'd wear what you feel best on! Congratulations!!

I wore leather trousers to mine, apparently female graduates had to wear skirts (1985) whoops!

I wore trousers too, in 2015, & only realised after that a skirt/dress was mandated for women, oops! Madness

@inhellyesterday wear your Converse & be comfortable
