Food places and cafes not accepting cash

Annoyedtiger · 28/06/2022 21:05

Yes I understand covid and I normally always pay with my card but today I accidentally left it at home and I went to three cafes including Cafe Nero which wouldn’t take my cash.

We know covid is airborne and everything is mostly back to normal.

AIBU to think everywhere should be tasking cash now?

The Cornish bakery chain have stopped taking cash too. While I was as queuing for my lunch at the weekend I saw a few older customers leave empty handed as they only had cash.

Its got nothing to do with Covid...its because cash needs to be balanced and banked....card payments are easier thats the only reason.

KrisAkabusi · 28/06/2022 21:15

COVID sped up the process, but this is the way things are heading. Lots of places no longer accept cash.

Mushroo · 28/06/2022 21:16

It’s expensive to accept cash. You have to insure it, pay for staff to cash it up, transport it to the bank.

also the risk of robbery / fake notes.

its cost saving not covid

I went to a cafe in London in 2018 that didn't take cash. London buses have been cashless for a few years. We've all got to get used to it.

Simonjt · 28/06/2022 21:17

We went to Warwick castle recently, they didn’t take cash, imagine how many school trips they host, imagine how much they are losing out on now those children can’t buy things in the gift shop.

Isaidnoalready · 28/06/2022 21:17

Many places are trying to go that way but some customers are voting with there feet and refusing to shop there

Tinktravels · 28/06/2022 21:19

I have this so much! I only really use cash and it does my head in
The woman in the petrol garage near me always puts a globe on before touching cash 🤦

It should be the law that retail businesses open to the public have to accept cash.

Can you add a credit card to your phone?

Hbh17 · 28/06/2022 21:26

It's nothing to do with Covid, people have been moving away from cash for years. I know that I am deeply old-fashioned because I use cards, whereas the young just use a phone to pay for everything.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/06/2022 21:27

Neros do take cash, but now only one one till.

Why? If they want to potentially lose business, then surely that is at the business owner's discretion.

I would suspect any loss of business would be more than off set by the cost savings of not having to handle cash anyway.

I had a school trip at my coffee shop recently. They all paid with cards. I was quite shocked. And pleased. Cash takes longer (counting change), has to be carted the bank, and they charge me to pay it in.

housemaus · 28/06/2022 21:31

I can't remember the last time I used cash, this is the way it's been going for years now.

There are reasons why it's not necessarily a good thing but it's often easier for businesses, and for many consumers. So I doubt it will slow down.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/06/2022 21:32

Card payments went down in our Asda last week. It caused chaos...

At least cash is reliable.

I think they'll have to get used to it, we're becoming a cashless society.

MajorCarolDanvers · 28/06/2022 21:34

I had a shop card shop refuse to let me borrow a pen to write in the card I had just bought "because of covid".

Its just an excuse for anything people don't want to do now that you are expected to accept without question.

tomatopsste · 28/06/2022 21:34

@Annoyedtiger get your card on your phone, it'll solve the forgotten card issue!

heyitsthistle · 28/06/2022 21:34

I wonder if it's more profitable to accept cash and handle cashing up/transport/banking, or letting a PSP like Stripe take a cut of every transaction 🤔

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 28/06/2022 21:36

Small independent businesses will always accept cash.

NorthernLights5 · 28/06/2022 21:40

I actually prefer it when people handling food don't accept cash, money is so so dirty. Nothing to do with covid, I worked in pubs and cafes for a number of years since I was a teen and hated handling cash! Yes obviously hands are washed but you can't leave the till between each customer and not all of us can use the majority of sanitizer.
