To have zero sympathy for Ghislaine Maxwell's 20 year sentence?

Mememene · 28/06/2022 20:49

She says she has been vilified and 'tried in 'court of public opinion':

I think she got away with it for way too long and might even believe her own BS. I have no sympathy and she is where she belongs.

Am I being unreasonable to think 20 years is not enough?

She was a madam who procured children for rich men. She should have got longer.

I am disappointed that out of all the men involved in this child abuse ring, one woman has been put in prison.

One woman needs to start talking then. Although, I guess if she does, she might suddenly "commit suicide".

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/06/2022 03:32

The only person who gets time for men raping trafficked girls is a woman. No, that's not just. It would be if every one of THEM did time too.

Midlifemusings · 29/06/2022 03:38

I have no sympathy for her. She was a kingpin in this operation and not only trafficked the young women but participated as well. She herself is a predator and she isn’t a scapegoat but one of the key players.

I am not sure why she hasn’t given up the names. Maybe now that the sentencing is done, she will release more?

It could be that the men could also testify to her further involvement leading to more charges and time for her. It could be fear of her own safety, if she believes Epstein was murdered.

I wonder if the victims will at some point release a list of names.

I fully agree with you.

Not only did she traffick young women, but sexually assaulted them as well.
The women testified aboout the horrific and humiliating sexual assaults GM did to them.
Scapegoat? No. When you listen to the victims stories, GM deserves the sentence she got.

I'm also not sure why she isn't prepared to give evidence of the other men involved.
She absolutely should, if she had any moral fibre, she should be singing like va canary.
Part of me thinks, she is keeping the information back so she can use it as a bargaining chip.

greywinds · 29/06/2022 07:13

She hasn't given them up because she doesn't genuinely believe they all did anything wrong

balalake · 29/06/2022 07:17

I wish that Prince Andrew had faced a court to answer for the allegations against him, and that Jeffrey Epstein had not been able to kill himself so he could have faced trial.

It is a death sentence. Suspect the low sentence is in return for knowledge, or designed to look like that. Someone will get her.

im not remotely sympathetic, ans I’m a bleeding heart. I hope she is scared to go to sleep for a long time.

the men have got away with it, rich and powerful men always do. They had their useful Royal idiot and their madam scapegoat. Both will already be replaced and a whole new cohort of women will be being exploited. And so the world turns.

—kicks stuff—

Perfectly put (sadly).
I appreciate there is other news too but it didn't even make the front page of The Times. I hope the info she holds makes its way onto the web sometime.

Maybebabyno2 · 29/06/2022 07:21

I feel huge sympathy for all her victims that she only got 20 years tbh.

A580Hojas · 29/06/2022 07:27

No sympathy for her but where the hell are all the men involved in this sleaze? Why aren't they on trial and going to prison?

ladydoris · 29/06/2022 07:27

If she can cough up some names while in prison that would be good.

theworldhas · 29/06/2022 08:37

Because it would cause an earthquake in the political/business/aristocracy establishment. It’d bring the whole house of cards tumbling down.
it would be the greatest scandal since words have been set to print.

CulturePigeon · 29/06/2022 08:48

What she did was appalling and she deserves a substantial sentence - I'm not questioning that. But I'm someone who is often surprised at the short sentences murderers get in this country, especially as other PPs have said, they will not necessarily even serve the full sentence. (But it's not the UK, and I don't know anything about sentencing rules in the US.)

So I want to be clear about that! But - the Moors murderers only got 30 years (in the first instance) for luring, torturing and killing young children, some of whom they knew. GM may be a very nasty, narcissistic woman, but she hasn't done that. I would have thought 10-15 years would be right - and if you think about being in gaol for that long, and getting the treatment such people suffer in prison, that's a hell of a punishment.

She's 60+, so really even 10-15 years would be a huge punishment - pretty much the rest of the best years of her life.

I'm NOT sympathising with her - just suggesting things need to be proportionate.

Completely agree. I hope she suffers every day she's in there.

vjg13 · 29/06/2022 09:10

Presume she will appeal anyway.

LimonataRocks · 29/06/2022 09:13

Not sorry for her. But also don't believe she is keeping her mouth shut out of worry for an Epstein-like accident. She is more valuable dead BEFORE she talks than after she does, so must be higher risk now. Silence her now and it's likely we'll never know for sure who else was involved.

She should be talking to everyone, giving them everything. She cannot save herself now unless she does.

I also agree: WHERE ARE ALL THE BLOODY MEN??????

54isanopendoor · 29/06/2022 10:07

I think Maxwell will forever 'look over her shoulder' now she has been convicted.
Now, there will be people who want to 'suicide' her before/in case she talks.
But, if she does talk, there will be people who want to kill her as a result of that.

I have no sympathy. She came from a highly dysfunctional family. BUT, she knew what she was doing, & she did it deliberately, for years. Supply & 'par-taking' too.
Those young girls have a lifetime of the affects of Abuse to manage (if they can)

snoochieboochies · 29/06/2022 10:16

Why was this trial not televised for us like the depp one?

PlanetNormal · 29/06/2022 10:27

snoochieboochies · 29/06/2022 10:16

Why was this trial not televised for us like the depp one?

Different type of case, different states, different laws. Depp v Heard was a civil case, a libel lawsuit, held in Virginia. Maxwell was a criminal trial held in New York.

Mememene · 29/06/2022 10:31

The papers are reporting that there is no parole or early release for federal prisoners, this means she'll serve every day of her 20 year sentence. What an awful shame . Need a font for sarcasm.

OP posts:
the80sweregreat · 29/06/2022 10:59

I don't think she will talk now.
I think her brother will try and lodge an appeal and it'll drag on that way
Hopefully she'll be away for the whole lot, but her family are rich and probably won't let it drop.
The men who used and abused these girls will get away with it because people are scared of them and their friends and talk costs lives.
Might come out in many years time who was involved with it all, but who knows?
