Please help, I'm not from the country so I know nothing about stuff like this.

My DD went for a walk with nursery and has come home with this on her leg. She says it hurts.

Update: got it out in one piece - it was still alive!!

Can't thank you all enough for your help.

I'm sorry I didn't get to record it for sporner corner!!

you rock - well done!

BruisedSkies · 29/06/2022 07:26

taking the kid to the vet!! That’s amazing. I actually bought our tick remover from the vet. I had one of those card ones but they’re shit if the tick is anywhere that isn’t easy to get to. So I rang the vet for advice and they said they sold hook ones which are better.

@howdoesatoastermaketoast thanks Grin

@WestIsWest nah she sort of kicked her leg a bit as she knew what we were up to but she was exhausted and went straight back to sleep! Deffo didn't hurt.

She woke up this morning asking for what happened to her leg but that's just because she remembered all the drama.

No issues today can see a tiny raised bit where we pulled it out. I'm keeping an eye.

Glad you got it out. I've removed many ticks with my tweezers from my dog and one from my neck! Get the tweezers as close to the skin as possible and firmly pull away - don't twist. Always see their little legs moving

Brilliant! My DC’s was a bit red and raised for maybe a week I think.

if no walk in and you cant see a GP just go to A&E and ask for help

Madamum18 · 29/06/2022 17:56

I don't want to cause worry but have you asked about her being tested for Lyme Disease infection as that is passed on via ticks so as it was there for a while there MIGHT be a risk of that developing. Ask at pharmacy or ring GP??

Octomore · 29/06/2022 17:59

They would only test if symptoms develop - Erythema migrans (bulls eye or circular red rash), joint pain, fever etc.

RedCardigan · 29/06/2022 18:06

I would ask the GP about prophylactic antibiotics anyway as waiting to see if the rash appears or not is too late. Other countries give a one off dose to anyone with a tick bite, only in the U.K. do we fire fight and not have preventative medicine.

clarehhh · 29/06/2022 18:08

Use tick remover from pet shop, I went to GP and he made a hash of removing it and thought if I ever get another will remove myself with the dogs remover. If no remover use a tissue and twist checking all removed.Don't smother it as will bury in deeper.

Romney981 · 29/06/2022 18:09

Not read all the threads. Glad you got the tick out. Both my dogs have had ticks and afterwards have been left with a bad reaction. Not Lymes Disease or any lasting issue but the area where the bite was came up in a reaction, a big lump called a granuloma which isn't an issue, just a reaction. Just in case that happens to your daughter.

this has been discussed upthread.

prophylactic antibiotics will be given if o/p is in an area with known Lyme disease. If she isn’t, then the risk is so low prophylactic ab’s are no benefit.

not handing out ab’s IS preventative medicine. You try firefighting an antibiotic resistant infection. Or antibiotic resistant lyme disease- there are already resistant strains.

Parr1960 · 29/06/2022 18:14

Definitely looks like one, DO NOT PULL IT OUT, YOU COULD LEAVE THE HEAD IN, go to hospital ASAP. Country girl here who has seen thus often. X

Mariposista · 29/06/2022 18:18

Brilliant good for you. Ewwww same happened when I yanked one out if dear puppy’s ear. Still alive and kicking! (The tick I mean, not the dog). He had a bump on his ear for ages but wasn’t poorly.

Seasidevibes · 29/06/2022 18:21

It’s a tick, i would go to the GP and get antibiotics as Lymes disease can be long lasting. Be careful when removing as the head can be left behind and cause complications

Tomasinabombadil · 29/06/2022 18:27

Glad that you got the tick removed quickly & safely. I have dogs & live in the countryside & have dealt with quite a few of these horrid little beasties over the years.

Here’s some advice from the U.K. NHS regarding any after effects.

“Ticks in the UK can sometimes carry a potentially serious infection called Lyme disease, so they should be removed as soon as possible if you find one attached to your skin.
See your GP if you develop any symptoms of Lyme disease, such as a rash that looks like a "bull's-eye on a dartboard" or a fever.”

Take care….🥰

Theonlyoneiknow · 29/06/2022 18:32

Best to keep tick, put it in freezer then if Lyme symptoms do develop you can have the tick tested at a lab to confirm it (there is one near Edinburgh)

Rwealere · 29/06/2022 18:35

Glad you sought help from MN OP, as I have been following because I have always wondered how you could tell and then just what to really do and how. so along with the pics it been most helpful to follow! Glad you got it all out. it’s so tiny I wondered how you’d even notice and how you’d get to twist it out. Good your DD was able to alert you.

Prettypenelope · 29/06/2022 18:35

Cover it and the surrounding area liberally with baby powder and it will fall off within half an hour or so. We did this ourselves and treated our dogs this way effectively when I lived in Africa

Icantfindmykeys · 29/06/2022 18:37

Yes, go to a walk in centre get it removed. You need to keep an eye on it. My son had one after a Cub outing it was in his neck for a couple of days - they didn’t mess about and gave him antibiotics.
In future use insect repellent or cover up - although you can’t cover kids completely!!!

Catsandallthingscrazy · 29/06/2022 18:39

Im a veterinary nurse and yes MOST definitely that is a tick !! Put some washing up liquid or olive around its head to suffocate it if you don't have a tick hook ! Under no circumstances try to remove it without a tick hook ! If any of its mouth parts are left behind it will likely cause an abscess! Shame on the nursery for not advising parents to dress kids in long sleeved tops long legged trousers as that would of stopped it attaching to her skin !

Rwealere · 29/06/2022 18:39

Really prettypenelope that sound so simple! I’d have more confidence trying that first

Tricey · 29/06/2022 18:44

Post tic, Ledum is a great help to support the body in dealing with tic transmission. Can find it in some health food stores or a HP pharmacy.
