To leave the cat "locked" out

I know I know that's broadly it's unacceptable to treat our Lord and Masters that way but here me out first

Said cat is being a fuckwit. He has a cat flap which he is perfectly capable of using but for the last 2 weeks he is obsessed with coming in the upstairs window. He always does this around 4.30AM. I know my place so I usually let him but but 30 mins later he's screaming to go back out!!

So this morning I didn't let him in .... and he's now giving me the silent treatment and in fact is walking out of every room I go in

I've tried to reason with him and explain that's its just an unacceptable time but he's not interested. DS thinks it's just a phase and I should accommodate it and it'll pass but I don't know.

So AIBU to leave him locked out and should I just accept waking up at 4.30 until he gets bored?

Did he leave the heads in your bed 😂

FunnysInLaJardin · 28/06/2022 13:41

😁cats are such a PITA. Ours has a cat flap which she happily uses, however she would much prefer we open the door for her and 9 out of 10 times we do 🙄

Dancingfairydreams · 28/06/2022 13:45

This thread does nothing for my confidence in moving to a house soon with a catflap to stop the 4:30 waking 🙈🙈🙈🙈

OwBist · 28/06/2022 14:00

Mine's good at using her cat flap to come in, pee in her "emergency" litter tray, then go back outside again. And her version of emergency is if it's raining. Or a bigger cat is around. Or if she's seen me hoovering and mopping and wants to kick litter around....

Overnight she's actually pretty good. Stays in overnight until 7am of her own accord, in her cozy, dark cat-cave. I used to call it my clean linen cupboard, but it's not that clean anymore.... Sigh.

ifonly4 · 28/06/2022 14:19

He's a lovely boy. He does have a look that states 'you're messing me around'. You're probably scattered this afternoon, but I bet he's forgiven.

Goldensunnydays81 · 28/06/2022 14:34

Oh mine is the same, but I won’t get a cat flap as we would forever have mice dead and alive in the house!
i left my balcony window open the other night and she brought a live mouse in that lived under my bed for 2 days.
so now she goes out about 1 am then comes back in at 4 am for a little snack and then is back out again until about 6 but it is a lot of getting up and down in the night .

RelativePitch · 28/06/2022 15:25

@spidersenses we have one of those too. Everything he brings in is very much alive. The prey he kills he generally eats. It's a very bad phase at the moment. We've had to lock the cat flap because of this. I don't want to move all my furniture to find a mouse, shrew, rat, bird. I don't need that! We do bring him in at about 11 at night until 5.30am to give the wildlife a break. Bastard cat. But I adore him.

He's gorgeous op.

No it was worse than that. He left a live one ... in my slipper (or it ran in there to escape him). I despise him I really do 😀

Do it, but there will be more silent treatment to come. Ask yourself if you can deal with it 😂

Wouldn't lock mine out all night, pretty irresponsible pet ownership.

If they are being chased by a fox or bully cat there's nowhere to go.

Injured they can't get in for several hours.
Could just lay there in pain, bleeding.
Get a cat flap if you want to let them out at night but don't deny them sanctuary.

He could get in if he wanted. Through the cat flap.

It's never just a phase. I think if you even give in once, they think that is how things are now going to be done. We had one who, after being allowed out once at 4am, then insisted on going out at 4am every day for the rest of his life.

You're doomed!

TuppyBarmyFotheringale · 28/06/2022 16:23

How old is he?
Apparently a sudden change of behaviour could be a sign of a medical condition. Cats are weird.

Lozzerbmc · 28/06/2022 16:50

I don’t have a catflap for the very reason our kitty also needs to be security checked before he’s allowed back in to make sure he hasn’t bought any “friends” back. We try to get him out early in eve so he doesn’t return too late. I stupidly let him out at 8:30 last night and he returned at 1:10 am this morning and I had to wait up for him. However he is a very sweet amiable little fellow so easily forgiven.

supertedlasso · 28/06/2022 17:30

Urgh I’d not even thought about one of them bringing stuff in if I had a cat flap. I would have a house full of frogs.

We get a lot of vole parts.
I'm glad all ours announce their arrival if they've brought something with them.

I often end up waiting up till midnight or later to get our last stragglers in, but I hate them being out all night.
Then they think 5am is a perfectly ok time to want to go out even though they know that's not happening!

Very much sounds like my boy!!

Confusedmeanderings · 29/06/2022 02:41

Unfortunately we have totally spoiled our boy Muldoon. Not only does he totally ignore the catflap, but he expects any door to be held open for him, even if it is actually ajar. I'm not quite sure how he trained us to do this, I suspect he started when he was a new kitten and wasn't quite big enough to push a door open. He's bloody big enough now though and has us very well trained. He also has appalling table manners. He seems to scatter most of his biscuits over the kitchen floor when dining. Here's a picture of him 'helping' me to inspect some new stock for my antiques business!

Sorry, I know he's gorgeous, but I didn't mean to post two pictures of him!

Selttan · 29/06/2022 02:58

This reminds me of my old girl. My mum would be sitting in the lounge downstairs and instead of tapping on the window there to be let in, she'd get on the roof and tap on the mezzanine window where I was sleeping.

She knew who was the soft touch.
