to ask if your automatic car is any good?

Planning to buy an automatic in a few weeks (second hand, I’m not made of money!). It needs to fit a toddler car seat in the back so I’m thinking not a hatch back. But ideally quite small and un-fancy.
If you drive an automatic, I would be really grateful for your car reviews!
sorry there wasn’t a ‘car’ section so AIBU it was..

For a cheap first car in automatic, look at a Honda CRV. Absolutely rock solid reliable, huge amount of room. Not stylish, but very practical. I had a 2006 one which I bought for £1500 7 years ago, drove it with no problems until I bought a newer car and my neighbour bought it from me as he liked it and has been driving it everyday since.

I had a Nissan note automatic. Most relieved economic car ive had. Big boot space too. It was fab x

Volvo V40 is great. And you can ignore mileage. Ours has done 140k in 8 years and still drives like it’s new. You do need to factor in brakes and tyres as automatic cars get through these more quickly than manual cars.

Mine is a Kia Picanto. Not too fancy, drives well and we have a child car seat in the back.

Automatic car made me a driver. I just can't use the manual gearbox. Maybe I'm too stupid for it. I made my peace with that.

xogossipgirlxo · 28/06/2022 15:35

Ah, and mine's VW Tiguan. They have DSG gearboxes, very reliable, smooth drive experience. Apparently Tiptronics are even better, I think they put them in Mercedes and Audi cars.

generalh · 28/06/2022 18:15

@TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo I car share anyway but I am averaging about 61.7 miles per gallon. Which is not bad apparently.

Toyota Yaris. Mine is a hybrid, wasn't looking for one specifically but did want a Yaris, but the hybrid means £0 road tax, which is a nice bonus.

Our household has manual & automatic

Both OK

Why wouldn't they be ?

Kia Niro (hybrid) - they only come as automatic which I wasn't a fan of at the time but now totally converted! Bought 2nd hand and very good value plus tank of petrol lasts for ages.

I looked this up because Im nosy, the tax on that is quite high for a hybrid, any idea why?

Nissan note auto post 2013, my tax is £30 compared to £220 before 2013. A big difference.

Horrible shape though and much smaller engines. Mines a 1.6 but yes tax is more.

Vauxhall Meriva. Very reliable. Good boot space, nice comfortable drive and they have flex doors at the back (they open the opposite way to normal back doors) which are so much better for getting kids in and out of cars.

mutleyschuckle · 28/06/2022 19:41

I've got a 2013 Suzuki swift- 4 door so you d easily get car seats in, feels like a go cart & quite cheap to insure. Only negative is the boot isn't massive so you may struggle with pushchairs in but I can fit 2 spaniels in so suits me. Great little car

I’ve an automatic Golf estate. It’s 290bhp so don’t lose any power with the automatic transmission.

if you’re after something smaller then maybe a Polo?

caringcarer · 28/06/2022 20:13

I have a Vauxhall Meriva. It is automatic and I got it because DH has problems with his knees. I like it well enough. It has cruise control when I go on motorway. It has a good size boot which is important to me.
