To ask what hobby you do?

Becoming more and more aware that I don't have any hobbies and aside from work I have nothing to talk about when catching up with friends.

I don't have any obvious interests that could lead into a hobby.

AIBU to ask you for ideas for a hobby?

Perhaps it is something you do or have done and can offer some insight into it.

I'm thinking something with other people rather than a solo thing.

I think try and narrow down from what you do (or really don't) like:

Are you outdoorsy or does the thought of wearing waterproofs make you want to cry? You can count in or out stuff like outdoor swimming, stand up paddleboarding, hiking, camping, horse riding, cycling etc.|

Do you like exercising or prefer to be comfy and horizontal (like me, haha) - then you can count in or out crossfit, bouldering, Zumba, pilates etc.

Do you like being crafty or does the thought of something fiddly fill you with boredom? That covers painting or pottery classes, cross stitch groups, knitting groups.

Are you remotely interested in politics/local governance/helping causes? If so, there's campaigning for local causes or politicians, joining a local residents' group, joining a local foodbank or street homeless support team and helping out.

Like animals? There's volunteering at shelters, being a dog walker, horse riding, etc.

Want something you can do at home but meet others virtually? There are games (everything from Dungeons and Dragons to fun co-op strategy games), or puzzle solving clubs or online book clubs or cryptic crossworder groups.

Want something fandom related? There's cosplaying, fan meet ups, going to conventions, watch-along clubs for every TV show and franchise you could think of.

Like food and/or cooking? Cooking classes, 'curry club' type events, cooking for local homeless shelters...

Want to do something useful? Almost every charity ever will need volunteers - from admin to serving food to fixing outbuildings at animal shelters to sorting donations for charity shops to writing emails/bids for fundraising.

Do you want to/can you spend a lot of money, or not? Some hobbies (rally car driving, horse riding, pottery, collecting Warhammer, even some online games) can be expensive, some (online clubs, book clubs, volunteering, campaigning, running, etc) can be cheaper, and some are as expensive as you want to make them, so factor that in.

Do you want it to be regular, or ad hoc, or a mix? Park run, for example, you can do whenever you fancy but it's on regularly. Volunteering is usually set times, whereas you can pop along to a book club or debate club whenever you want.

So maybe think - "it needs to be out of the house, but not 'outdoorsy', I'd prefer it to be once a month/week/fortnight, I'm not fussed for it being charitable, I do want it to be cheap"... etc and then go from there!

Community theatre - building sets, finding props, eating cake; most convivial.

Thearex · 27/06/2022 14:29

Tennis & Gym
Walking
Sugar Craft & Baking
Reading
French Class (spend a lot of time failing to learn verbs)
Journaling - not sure if this classes as a hobby TBH

I make dollshouses in small scales and the furniture to go into them and go to all the dollshouse fairs.
Gardening.
I joined local occult and mystical societies. I meet loads of people that way there are more men than women there by far.
I renovate old furniture.
I'm currently doing an advanced book binding course.
I ride motorbikes and am a member of a group I go to rallies with in summer. I dont ride in winter.

Does Mumsnet count?

Family History research. Plan to actually visit places in the next couple of years.

Planning holidays (that we may or may not take 😂).

DH and I have started doing an after dinner walk now that Ddog has gone. We try to do different local routes.

Yodaisawally · 27/06/2022 14:36

Weightlifting but my friends really don't want to hear me bore on about it!

MintyGreenDreams · 27/06/2022 14:37

Couch to 5k

ZaZathecat · 27/06/2022 14:38

Am Dram. Very sociable, lots of fun, and people who don't want to act are always welcome for helping out in all sorts of ways - costume, hair and make-up, set building, props, making teas, running the bar at shows.

Gh12345 · 27/06/2022 14:38

Reading? Photography and hand embroidery

Stellaris22 · 27/06/2022 14:39

Gym (strength training) and LARP.

KyaClark · 27/06/2022 14:41

I read a lot. I've got an entire Instagram profile dedicated to it, because I'm a loser 🤣

Hardtofindafreename · 27/06/2022 14:41

Stsrted triathlons for fitness and it became a big hobby. Reading and baking too

WishICouldButIDontWantTo · 27/06/2022 14:42

Musical theatre, playing the violin (also play the piano, but no piano in our house unfortunately!), singing, running (REALLY want to get back into this but it's tricky fitting it around full time work and a 7 month old baby!)...I also follow the curly girl method for curly hair so spending time researching it on Instagram and actually doing my hair is a hobby in itself!

SwanAnn · 27/06/2022 14:44

Running, ballet, yoga, Pilates, weights.

Non exercise related. I've recently taken up crochet and like reading groups. I plan to do some watercolour painting later this summer.

bareface99 · 27/06/2022 14:48

Dog agility; dog obedience; dog displays at local events. My friends eyes gloss over or they change the subject if I talk about my hobby but I think well at least I have one. Glad to have some friends with the same hobbies.

erikbloodaxe · 27/06/2022 14:49

Buying fabric and making my own clothes. It can be very expensive but it's a great feeling when someone compliments your outfit. All my dresses have pocketsSmile and everything I wear is a one off. Huge online sewing following too.

LisaSimpson77 · 27/06/2022 14:49

Church (which is an excellent way of filling your time and expanding your social life!)
Sing in a choir and do amateur dramatics.

gwenneh · 27/06/2022 14:52

Riding (horses). It's as solo or as social as I want it to be, depending on the day.

Giggorata · 27/06/2022 14:53

Reading, dolls houses and making stuff for same and dolls house fairs, occult groups (waves to Shehasadiamondinthesky), gardening, crafts, tai chi, singing in a local group, drumming in a local group, a bit of writing.

I used to make wine and cider, which I will take up again, now I’m retired and have planted a load of fruit trees and bushes, just waiting for my harvest.

I know that if I start online gaming I will never emerge into the real world ever again, but I quite fancy some LARP.

HelloHeathcliffeItsMe · 27/06/2022 14:53

Ooooh I could tell you but it would be OUTING!

Nah not really. Book club, learning French, running, peloton. Used to sew but haven't found time lately.

DockOTheBay · 27/06/2022 14:56

I run a Brownies unit. Very rewarding and great fun. We just came back from a camp this weekend and the girls had a blast (and so did we). I've met a lot of people through it too.

I am in a book club which is a good way to make reading a hobby and also meet people.

monsterastuckiosa · 27/06/2022 14:57

Piano, pottery, learning to grow vegetables. My friend and I hike once a week together. And - this one's not a 'hobby' as such, but I also volunteer teaching adults to read.

Cbeebiesismyworld · 27/06/2022 14:58

Yoga, horse riding, walking the dog and wild swimming.

AceofPentacles · 27/06/2022 14:59

@Shehasadiamondinthesky ooh where did you find out about local mystical societies?

I do crap gardening and collect tarot decks / read tarot
