That ASDA are partly to blame for the price of petrol.

Asda when owned by Walmart has the policy that they where the cheapest petrol in town which meant that the other supermarkets would also keep their prices down.

Asda was sold to the Issa brothers who also own 1000s of petrol stations under EuroGarages and certainty round here none of the supermarkets are now the cheapest place to get fuel.

and I know they’ve been forced to sell some but with out that completion to keep prices down they’ve run away. And now our local rural garage is cheaper than ASDA, Tesco, Morrisons in the nearest city when it used to alleys be 5-6p a litre more expensive.

That’s a crazy theory!

whenwillthemadnessend · 25/06/2022 06:24

Is this true as I haven't seen cheaper from A supermarket since all this started. We now go to costco. 7 p cheaper and we have one in the next town.

SandyWedges · 25/06/2022 06:25

Nah that's just silly. They changed their policy as it was no longer sustainable

Nope they changed their policy before this all kicked off purely about profit.

I’m not suggesting prices wouldn’t have gone up but because they’ve dropped the policy it’s a bit more of a free for all.

You know they're a business...of course it's about profit, that's not some kind of moral failing 🙄

Well yes, that's exactly what I meant.

That’s a crazy theory!

Why. It’s a fact that ASDa have dropped the policy.

its a fact that our very rural petrol station for that last 20 years has always been 5-6p more expensive than the nearest Asda and now is often cheaper.

we buy fuel for a business and use supermarket fuel and place with Asda all the supermarkets used to be cheap. Go to a town without an Asda and Morrisons was always 2-3p more expensive

It was unsustainable because petrol prices went crazy. They would lose a lot of money.

when the Issa brothers bought asda

they even tried to sell the Asda petrol stations to themselves.

If they’d just done it but the dropped it last year when they took over Asda

No shit. Just showing how much in towns with Asda they previously kept prices lower than places without an Asda.

ASDA are still cheaper than all the Shell/BP/independent garages around here.

OwletteGeckoCatboy · 25/06/2022 06:38

I was under the impression they weren't allowed to buy the petrol stations? Just the shops.

OwletteGeckoCatboy · 25/06/2022 06:39

Oh sorry no I'm wrong it did go through

coffeecupsandfairylights · 25/06/2022 06:49

ASDA is by far the cheapest here 🤷🏻‍♀️

Summerofcontent · 25/06/2022 07:00

Our closest Asda is 15 miles away but the tesco in our town is more expensive than the BP half a mile up the road.

What is even more bizarre is that the garages on the main a road (normally 4 or 5 pence more) are cheaper than the local one

Yabu for thinking it wasn’t about profit before. Ever heard of loss leaders, Asda would sell the petrol cheap as a decent percentage of people would come over to fill the car up and do a weekly shop whilst there so it made sense to sell the petrol cheap to increase their overall profits. Obviously it’s got to a point where it’s not sustainable and doesn’t make sense profit wise so they’ve changed policy but they were never selling cheap out of the goodness of their hearts

This ^

They always made money on it in the past or they wouldn't have done it.

ASDA have always been trying to make a profit.

I think it definitely a contributing factor as the petrol stations that used to be the cheapest no longer are near me. If one supermarket chose to drop the price of fuel and others will follow but I suspect they’ll all hold prices. Makes you wonder if they are doing the same with food

In this climate, I expect many businesses can't afford to drop their prices 🤷🏻‍♀️

CuteOrangeElephant · 25/06/2022 07:50

I've worked on a petrol price engine for one of the major supermarkets and can confirm that margins are very thin because it's used as a loss leader.

I now live in a country without supermarket forecourts and do miss them!

BarbaraofSeville · 25/06/2022 07:52

I use the petrol prices app to find the cheapest petrol station in the area when I'm going out and need to fill up and it's nearly always Asda round here.

Although our Sainsburys is also often cheaper, especially when I decide to treat the car to super unleaded, which Asda don't sell.

Toottooot · 25/06/2022 07:54

Filled my car up yesterday. The local Tesco is normally 1 or 2p cheaper than Asda - yesterday it was 6p dearer. Asda currently has the cheapest petrol in my area 🤷🏻‍♀️
