That ASDA are partly to blame for the price of petrol.

Asda when owned by Walmart has the policy that they where the cheapest petrol in town which meant that the other supermarkets would also keep their prices down.

Asda was sold to the Issa brothers who also own 1000s of petrol stations under EuroGarages and certainty round here none of the supermarkets are now the cheapest place to get fuel.

and I know they’ve been forced to sell some but with out that completion to keep prices down they’ve run away. And now our local rural garage is cheaper than ASDA, Tesco, Morrisons in the nearest city when it used to alleys be 5-6p a litre more expensive.

If that was the case then the petrol wouldn’t have skyrocketed in other parts of the world like it has.

Marmite27 · 25/06/2022 07:58

Asda is still the cheapest local to me, then Sainsbury’s, Morrison’s and Jet. Some of the shell and Np are the same, except for one, which is a whopping 12p more than Asda. I don’t know who they sell to, when there are other fuel stations closer that are cheaper within less than half a mile including another shell garage. Mind you, it’s notorious for card cloning so maybe I shouldn’t be surprised.

Where I am, Asda has consistently been 4-5p cheaper than everywhere else, even now.

MrsPartridgeKleio · 25/06/2022 08:01

Morrisons have always been the cheapest for petrol where I live. That said, go to a town 30 miles away and sainsburys petrol is always about 5p a litre cheaper! Wasn't impressed at having to fill up last night, 191.9p a litre!

Even John Lewis has dropped their 'Never Knowingly Undersold' price promise that was a big part of their business identity for decades.

tttigress · 25/06/2022 08:13

Yeah, but obviously they are not going to sell below their all in costs.

Maybe they would be 1 or 2p cheaper if still owned by Walmart, but the main reasons that petrol is now so much cheaper is our of their hands.

balalake · 25/06/2022 08:25

I understand in Northern Ireland there is some form of easily accessible price comparator for petrol and diesel prices (according to an interview with the head of the RAC foundation I saw).

Perhaps the same for the rest of the UK would help reduce prices, as even 1p per litre cheaper adds up.

More like 7-9p

You know they're a business...of course it's about profit, that's not some kind of moral failing 🙄

It's all about profit, but it isn't the retailers who are making a mint. They're not the ones roaring through Knightsbridge in Lamborghinis or buying up football clubs. No, look further up the supply chain.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 25/06/2022 11:11

Our Asda is very much the cheapest in the area. We have 3 petrol stations within a mile of each other and Asda frequently run out as they are so much lower in price.

rwalker · 25/06/2022 11:12

Most retailers buy fuel at average cost from prev week . So if asda bought fuel last week it would at the production price for the week before.
If local garage bought 3 weeks ago it would be bought at production cost a month ago.

Asda must sell huge volumes so they will be buying each week hence price fluctuations no great conspiracy .

declutteringmymind · 25/06/2022 11:21

I'm glad that your rural fuel station is now competitive.

itsgettingweird · 25/06/2022 11:25

I don't know if there's anything in your theory but my local Sainburys which was always 5p per litre cheaper went closer and closer to the local garages and is now 2p a litre more expensive!

CMOTDibbler · 25/06/2022 11:44

We don't have any supermarket petrol stations in my small town, but in the nearest town that does 8 miles away, prices are much lower. Here, diesel is 199.9 at both garages Sad
