To think there is something wrong with my flapjacks?

I made flapjacks on Wednesday. Cut turn into little squares and have been munching on them ever since. I’ve also had stomach craps, bloating and loose poo ever since.

DH says there is nothing in flapjacks that could cause this. I thought he must be right as it’s literally just oats, sugar and butter!

ive just had another one and immediately afterwards stomach cramping and feeling like I need the bog for the 5th time today.

coincidence or is it my flapjacks?? DH isn’t eating them.

yabu - you can’t get Ill from flapjacks
yanbu - it’s clearly the flapjacks

Oats always do this to me. I had to stop eating porridge for this reason. My dad is the same.

MrsWayne · 24/06/2022 22:39

YANBU Flapjacks are for birds. 😁

How odd! I might trial it in morning and make mysen a bowl of porridge, see if it has the same effect

That's because you're using the wrong recipe.

SoupDragon · 24/06/2022 23:19

I agree that it's unlikely to be something "wrong" with the flapjacks that's making you ill though. Oats causing a problem could be the case though.

Honeyroar · 24/06/2022 23:20

I make flapjack a lot for my café, they’re really popular. Even though I love it, it gives me stomach bloat and indigestion. I think syrup doesn’t agree with me. I’m fine with oats.

Can you recommend a recipe? These are so rock hard

You need the mumsnet soft flapjack recipe (with condensed milk). It’s amazing!
but from the sound of it it doesn’t agree with you so perhaps best not!

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 24/06/2022 23:21

yabu - flapjack should have golden syrup and treacle in them.

seriously - oats do the same to me, same happens with hobnobs. But! My solution is to have soggy oats and dunk the biscuits. It’s when they are dry and crunchy that I have issues.

Well these are very dry and crunchy so maybe this is the issue?

It could be. I can only say what works - or doesn’t work! for me. (Oaty tum and bum is really not good).

Isaidnoalready · 24/06/2022 23:26

Why doesn't dh eat the flapjacks? If this were a cheap movie he would have poisoned them (I am joking) if he is so sure its not them he should try them and prove his point surely?

SunflowerGardens · 24/06/2022 23:29

I admire the way you're still persisting in eating them despite them making you unwell Grin

I refuse to let them go to waste, I slaved for 30 minutes in the kitchen to make them! 😂

Unsercooked oats have that effect in this house.....

Not officially a flapjack but these are amazing, I fiddle around with it so there's hardly any oats and more nuts and seeds....Nigella Breakfast Bars

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/06/2022 23:57

It's the oats!

Gubu · 24/06/2022 23:58

I have some sort of sort of oat intolerance too. Try gluten free (including hob nobs), I'm ok with them (I don't need gluten free for any other foodstuff). And for a recipe, BBC good food, so many delicious calories.

Pleiades2020 · 25/06/2022 00:47

@AllHailKingLouis this is the recipe I use. I cook for 20 mins. Also do about a third of the amounts as just for me. They look a little pale when they come out and are a bit soft, but they harden as they cool. You might be overcooking them if they're hard.

Pleiades2020 · 25/06/2022 00:49

And I use salted butter as it gives a nice contrast to the golden syrup taste.

Why yes, yes I can 😂 Unfortunately, as MNHQ have made the search facility completely useless I can't link you to the "perfected" recipe so here is it...

Porridge Oats (just the plain cheap type, not large ones), 250g (you might need a bit extra if the mixture is really gooey)
Butter, 150g
Golden Syrup 2 table spoons (about 75g)
condensed milk, half a tin

Method:

Preheat the oven to 160 degrees celcius, you may need to search the web to find a conversion to gas mark (1-9) which many ovens are in.

Line the baking tin with baking parchment, (18x28cm tray).

Melt the butter in a large saucepan over a medium heat.

Add the syrup and condensed milk. Keep heating and stirring until all is melted and mixed. let the mixture boil for a couple of minutes, stirring to prevent it sticking to the pan. This makes it nice and caramelly

Gradually add the oats, folding them in. All the oats should be coated, and the mixture quite dense, but still sticky. Don't add so many oats that the mixture becomes dry.

Pour the mixture into the tin and spread about to a depth of 2-3cm. Fill as many tins as necessary! Don't squash the mixture in, just spread it evenly.

Bake in the oven for ~15mins (mine took about 20).

You should take them out when they just start to go brown round the edges, don't leave longer than this. If they're still squidgy in the middle that's fine, they set on cooking.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 25/06/2022 07:49

My flapjacks are basically toffee with some oats mixed in. That’s how I like them 😁

Sparkletastic · 25/06/2022 07:52

Oats are an IBS trigger for me.

MrsPartridgeKleio · 25/06/2022 07:58

Oats do the same to me although I can tolerate porridge better, not sure if that's because they are cooked for longer.
