To think serving alcohol at a school fayre seems off

Mummy0b · 24/06/2022 14:21

Just that really, it seems off to me.
Not against drinking in any way, i actually work in a bar (possibly why it seems more of a concern to me) but theres a time and a place for drinking and a school fayre doesnt seem like one of them. Ive witnessed so many happy, family occasions descend into utter chaos because of excess alcohol consumption and it seems like a school fayre would do fine without a bar.
Additionally, i know many people who struggle with alcohol addiction and i dont think they would expect to be confronted with that temptation at a school event
So AIBU to think people could go without a drink at a school fayre?

It's not really "supposed" to be fun for anyone, it's supposed to make money, making it fun just helps with that.

I used to help at our local Salvation Army fetes(teetotal). Miserable affairs they were, hardly anyone turned up and you'd be there all morning to make less than I would have donated if they just asked.

No alcohol or gambling

motogirl · 24/06/2022 18:15

Best school fete I've been to had a covers band and beer tent- we made £6000! 4x the year prior when they didn't have beer and a band. Brilliant night, kids were happy playing with their mates parents were happy too

Kione · 24/06/2022 18:20

What's wrong with fayre? Is what our school calls it

hookiewookie29 · 24/06/2022 18:25

Ours have alcohol at them- I'm sure it increases the footfall! Can't see an issue with it myself.

Nothing.

Fayre is an old spelling of either fair or fare that is sometimes used in (British English) to suggest something that is simple and traditional.

I dont have a problem with people drinking, i even have a drink myself on occasion, this has become a lot of people defending their right to drink and thats fine, you do you but if spending 3 hours in the afternoon at an event with your children at their school is unbareable without a drink i think you need to have a look at yourself

You're not reading the replies and repeating yourself over and over because most people disagree with you. Have a 🍷

Lndnmummy · 24/06/2022 19:05

I agree its unnecessary and I dislike alcojol seeved at children's activities. My ds had a school disco recently (primary) and there was a bar there which I thought was really inappropriate. They don't have to be indoctrinated that disco=booze at 5, surely?

Different schools do things differently. Ours treats it as a serious fundraiser rather than a purely 'fun for the kids' thing. It isn't just school families who attend, people from the local community are welcome too. Loads of organisation goes into it in the knowledge that it raises 10k+ which is used to contribute to equipment and fun things for the school (stuff for the leavers etc). Other schools keep the costs down so that kids can just go and have fun. I get why a beer tent would be odd for those ones.

Calling it a "fayre" is a bit off.

😂

UndertheCedartree · 24/06/2022 19:13

I can see your point and I'm quite on the fence. It is common to have a Pimm's Tent and I imagine they make quite a lot of money that way.

I hate it. Our local softplay sells booze too, alcohol culture is insidious in the UK.

Tbh I hate the culture of adding 'culture' onto any noun and turning it into a buzzword

Then read it as ‘alcohol consumption is insidious in the UK’ 🙄

It's not unbearable to spend 3 hours without a drink, or without a burger, or without tombola, or without hook-a-duck, or without a bric a brac stall. None of it's technically necessary. But for a successful fundraiser, it's best to sell things that make money, and alcohol can have large profit margins.

I rarely drink. The only time I have had a drink in the last 3+ months was at a fundraising dinner for DD's sports club (not at school, to be fair). I don't think choosing to drink somewhere where the money will go to good use is any worse than drinking in a pub or at home.

Are primary school fundraisers organised via WhatsApp a simple, traditional medieval event?

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 24/06/2022 20:27

If there's no Pimms stand at ours tomorrow I'm going to be hugely disappointed - one of the highlights imo.

And would you drive after one Pimms?

A580Hojas · 24/06/2022 20:41

I'll say again, I love a drink. Currently on my 2nd glass of wine this evening.

But it's sad that children's events are thought to be dull without alcohol. Is that actually any unreasonable opinion?

Bollindger · 24/06/2022 20:49

Why do you think only your choice counts OP?
The whole point of a fair, is to bring people into the school community and make it an enjoyable day to raise funds for the school.
If having a Bar means the dads are more willing to spend 4 or 5 hours doing things with their children, so what there is no funnel forced down the parents throats each person can decide for themselves, and the Bars normally make over half of the profits at these events.

Most Childrens fairs are dull, if it is outside then a beer or two is fine, and people fight even without beer.

Pumperthepumper · 24/06/2022 20:52

For me it’s the idea that it’s the bar making half the profit. Ie that’s what people prefer to spend their money on.

In my opinion it's shop bought alcohol served! Although others have said local bars donated. But 50% profit is better than no profit anyway?

ShepherdMoons · 24/06/2022 21:02

Yes my dcs school has always had some wine on offer at the Christmas and summer fairs. I don't drink much but other parents seem to enjoy it and it raises a lot of money for the PTA!!

I would think she’d go straight to church and pray for absolution

No, I don’t think so when it’s supposed to be a kids thing. Why not just find something they’re just as prepared to spend money on?

Attending a school Christmas play that had alcohol on sale. Thought that was odd considering the majority of parents there had cars parked outside.
And hypocritical of the school that objected to a chocolate bar in a lunchbox but hey daytime drinking is fine.
