To think serving alcohol at a school fayre seems off

Just that really, it seems off to me.
Not against drinking in any way, i actually work in a bar (possibly why it seems more of a concern to me) but theres a time and a place for drinking and a school fayre doesnt seem like one of them. Ive witnessed so many happy, family occasions descend into utter chaos because of excess alcohol consumption and it seems like a school fayre would do fine without a bar.
Additionally, i know many people who struggle with alcohol addiction and i dont think they would expect to be confronted with that temptation at a school event
So AIBU to think people could go without a drink at a school fayre?

I detest beer tents at anything that is for families. Always a few that spoil it. I took my daughter to the local carnival once with a friend and her little boy. I had bought my daughter a Winne the Pooh balloon in the park after which she loved. A few rowdy men obviously had a few drinks came marching out the beer tent and punched my her balloon then just walked off no apology. Luckily we were stood right by the man I bought it off an hour earlier.

Plus people drinking then going on ride's and being sick on the ride. I don't appreciate being splattered by sick thanks very much.

Always going to be d*heads. A family member of mine also has alcohol issues. So if he's there at family gatherings nobody drinks. It never ends well if he does. I detest alcohol at family events shouldn't be allowed.

I’ve chaired a PTA for 8 years and we’ve never had booze at events.

It’s not necessary.

The fun police 🙄

custardbear · 24/06/2022 17:27

Surely they make more money for the school that way, like others say, beer,Pimms and Prosecco - win win

What rides are vomit inducing at the school
fair?

What about gambling on the school tombola, that should be stopped as well!

Yes, that's my point.

mbosnz · 24/06/2022 17:29

but if spending 3 hours in the afternoon at an event with your children at their school is unbareable without a drink i think you need to have a look at yourself

It's spending 3 hours in the afternoon at an event with other people's children (and their parents) that is so often unbearable, I find. . .

Booze as prizes yes, booze consumed at an event all for children and AT a school, no! It's a recipe for disaster.

This^

I'm with you, let's stop everything!

Not really I love the wine and the tombola!

It's working on your comprehension skills you need to focus on. I think the OP is bonkers.

I used to love 'Sponge the teacher' but they banned that too.

I think people like the OP probably phoned 999 and reported it as a violent incident 😂😂

SmartCarDriver · 24/06/2022 17:38

@worraliberty nooooo they've not banned that!! Outrageous!!

stitchinguru · 24/06/2022 17:38

It’s worth bearing in mind here that (due to the addiction and withdrawal issues) alcohol would be classified as a ‘Class A drug’ by nowadays definitions.
Just because something is legal, it doesn’t make it desirable.

Actually so do I, not sure why you haven't picked that up! I've made it very clear!

Maybe have a glass of wine and chill out?

superram · 24/06/2022 17:41

Yabvvvu. Honestly it makes loads of money and tbh I wouldn’t go if there wasn’t.. school fare’s are hard work. I don’t think a glass of pinks to ease the pain is too much to ask.

Yes, I heard someone threw a fun sponge by mistake.

Could've been wishful thinking though? 🤔😁

What rides are vomit inducing at the school
fair?

One at my son's school had everything from Taylor's funfair including spinning teacups and a few other vomit inducing spinning round ride's that I can't remember the name of and a simulator. As well as the usual trampolines, bouncy castles, slides etc

You'd hate our village church OP. 😄

i think you’re overthinking this. It’s normal

Not at our local school it isn't.

The fun police 🙄

Please read my other posts on this thread.

Following the utterly disgusting behaviour of parents towards the former headteacher alcohol at school events was stopped. It wasn’t reintroduced by 2 further headteachers and now the local authority has banned it due to incidents at other schools.

We don’t actually have a school fair any more, for lots of reasons. We do non-alcoholic mulled wine at Xmas concerts and I do buy the brandy laced mince pies.

Is if you can get the local brewery to donate and you coin it in😂It makes serious amounts of money for our PTA

ExtraOnion · 24/06/2022 18:06

I chair the PSA

we have mulled wine & liquor coffees at the Christmas Fare
Pimms & Prosecco at the Summer Fare
We also hold evening events, where we sell Beer, Wine & Spirits

Pumperthepumper · 24/06/2022 18:07

I hate it. Our local softplay sells booze too, alcohol culture is insidious in the UK.

Greengagesnfennel · 24/06/2022 18:08

I agree with you op. No need for alcohol at childrens events. A school fete is for kids. It's not supposed to be fun for adults it's supposed to be fun for kids.
Tipsy grown ups is not fun for them.

It's not really "supposed" to be fun for anyone, it's supposed to make money, making it fun just helps with that.

I used to help at our local Salvation Army fetes(teetotal). Miserable affairs they were, hardly anyone turned up and you'd be there all morning to make less than I would have donated if they just asked.
