To drink alcohol free beer from tap

HedgehogintheFog · 24/06/2022 13:25

Currently pregnant. I enjoy an occasional alcohol free beer. We went to a pub and, unusually, they had an alcohol free beer on tap, so I ordered it. DH said wasn’t I worried about it, in case the barrel was connected wrongly, or they used the wrong tap, and I accidentally got a “real” beer. I think it was a bit of a ridiculous concern. It’s a pub we got to a lot. It’s very clean and organised, and surely they must have procedures in place for allergies etc. anyway. Just to clarify, he would have been fine if I’d had a bottle or can, it was purely because it was from the tap.

Just to add: I know there are divided opinions on drinking alcohol free drinks in pregnancy, so just want to say that I have done my own research and am very comfortable with having one from time to time.

A father-to-be who actually gives a damn about his unborn baby's health? Shocking...

Yes, it might be far-fetched, but attempting to ridicule him on here is fairly awful of you.

AffIt · 24/06/2022 14:04

There are a VAST number of drinks and foods that contain naturally-occurring traces of alcohol.

Is your OH expecting you to exist on water and porridge for the duration of your pregnancy?

(Although actually maybe skip the porridge - having just googled, oats can and do ferment, so, you know... there's always a risk. I also love the mental image of somebody off their face on overnight bircher.)

There is no stretch of the imagination where the OP is harming her baby's health here. Don't be idiotic.

bigbluebus · 24/06/2022 14:08

I was going to say the same as a PP. Imagine someone goes to the pub and they are the designated driver so they drink 3 pints of alcohol free beer. The pub has connected up the pump to the alcoholic beer by mistake. Driver has an accident on the way home, breathalysed and found to be over the limit having only consumed alcohol free beer. More than the licencees job is worth I'd say. Not to mention all those folk who think they are drinking alcohol who are being short changed with alcohol free beer by mistake!
Does your DH have form for thinking up such unrealistic scenarios?

VioletCharlotte · 24/06/2022 13:34

I think that maybe his real concern is he's worried about what other people will think if it looks like you're drinking a pint of beer while pregnant, but he just doesn't want to say it.

Are there?

Why?

There are divided opinions on literally EVERYTHING during pregnancy

Regularsizedrudy · 24/06/2022 14:10

He’s being way over the top. Even if you had a real beer, one would be fine

Oh yeah I forgot we had to give men gold stars for doing the absolute bare minimum of giving a shit 🙄

hobbledyhoy · 24/06/2022 14:14

Yeah afraid I'm with most other PP and it's more the perception he's worried about than the likelihood of a mistake being made with the lines. Either that or he really is ridiculously neurotic.

Tinkletwat · 24/06/2022 14:19

Off topic but I'm excited that you managed to find alcohol free beer on tap, I've yet to see it. Was it Heineken? I know they've been working hard to get this in place, the beer kept fermenting in the pipes so they've had to find a way around that.

Hope you enjoyed it and good luck with your pregnancy OP.

ImInStealthMode · 24/06/2022 14:24

I wouldn't worry OP. The pub would be in very serious trouble if they put an alcoholic beer barrel on a non-alcoholic beer line so I'm certain they would do whatever necessary to avoid it.

(When I was in the pub trade we used to be repeatedly warned by management about even getting 2 alcoholic beers mixed up in case one was a higher percent volume than the other and we accidentally served a stronger drink than advertised).

ForBestResults · 24/06/2022 14:27

There are people for whom connecting the wrong barrell would be a far bigger issue than pregnancy. It's a miatake that just wouldn't happen and surely you'd know as soon as you tasted it anyway.

Plus he doesn't get to control you even if you wanted a real beer.

TruffleShuffles · 24/06/2022 14:31

I’ve drank many pints in pubs and have never got the wrong one, if they don’t mix up the alcoholic beers I very much doubt they would mix up the alcoholic and non alcoholic. To add to the people who say you would taste the difference, you can but it’s definitely a much closer taste off a tap than out of a bottle. The first time I had an alcohol free beer off a tap I had to have a sip of my husbands to make sure I had the right one.

Idontgiveashitanymore · 24/06/2022 14:36

Omg I had the very occasional drink when pregnant about 4 during the last trimester. My daughter turned out fine.
don’t worry

JennyForeigner · 24/06/2022 14:36

Gosh, and you might accidentally be served a caffeinated coffee as well, and then order a chicken sandwich and get a chunk of camembert.

Does your husband think you are an idiot?

I can't abide coke or other sweet drinks. Non-alcoholic beer is great for hydration and kept me going as a daily treat during my recent twin pregnancy.

Watchkeys · 24/06/2022 14:42

Isn't he worried about getting to the pub, given that there's a risk of unwitting drunk drivers being on the surrounding roads? I mean, if he got hit by one of them, his baby could be left without a father.

Mocking the occasional batshit PFB behaviour of first time mothers and fathers is a long-established MN tradition.

It's normally accompanied with an affectionate and patronising "bless!" but in this case, because we suspect that DH has other motives he's getting a rougher ride.

Oh, get over yourself.

Her husband was being ridiculous and so are you. It's not like she's posted a photo of him with his name and address.

Is it relevant that you were having twins? Were you twice as thirsty?

Husband is BU for trying to guilt you

When I was preggo i got so sick
Of fruit juice in the pub.

Alco-free beer was a life saver

Why are there divided opinions on AF free drinks in pregnancy? There is no difference to drinking a diet coke?

Also there is a nearly zero per cent chance of them connecting the wrong barrel.

They have strict protocols on these things. It's all good hygiene isn't it.

There's also divided opinion on drinking diet coke in pregnancy to be fair. Many countries say artificial sweeteners aren't safe during pregnancy. I don't think there are many products left in the world that there's not a pregnancy debate on at this stage.

If you husband is so stressed, he could give up beer himself for the duration of your pregnancy and breastfeeding . That might help him feel more relaxed and would be moral support for you.

He could also think of some place for you both to go out that are not the pub.

Seems like an odd thing to take a swipe at someone for but, actually, yes. Women who are pregnant with multiples do need to drink more and dehydration can induce labour...

Non alcoholic beer is fine in pregnancy.
diet coke is fine in pregnancy.
you husband is being nuts.
