I am not a slave to fashion, but want replace 12 year old sofas. I like the corner sofa look but wonder if it's a fad that will not last?

It depends on the configuration of the room. We have one in the kitchen, because it fits in - a corner! A straight one would be ok, but fewer people could sit on it and there would be wasted space.

Lockheart · 23/06/2022 11:04

Why does it matter? If you want one and have the space for one then get one.

Intheflicker · 23/06/2022 11:04

So you are a slave to fashion then? if you like them get one.

onanotherday · 23/06/2022 11:35

Yes I do like them, but it was a concern more about wasting money on something that would look dated more that a normal sofa in another 12 years🤣 I admit I'm a bit tight!

They’ve been around for quite a while now!

Scienceteacher1986 · 23/06/2022 11:47

We move house soon, we've currently got a 2 and 3 piece and they will not git the shape of the new room. We will take the 3 seater but hopefully next year get a corner sofa so more people can sit. Can't say I'll really care what anyone else thinks of it

If you like them get one

SaltandPepper22 · 23/06/2022 12:17

We have one which we bought last year and we love it!

We have an L shaped living room which means the corner sofa is perfect as two “normal” sofas would either cut the room in half making the room feel small or be very far away from each other making it hard to know where to put the TV. It’s also exceedingly comfortable and both me and my fiancé can both lie down at either end and have oodles of space to slob out.

Cotswoldmama · 23/06/2022 12:35

I think it depends on your room shape/size etc. I'm not really sure about fashion. I'm not really into interior design fashion just the clothing kind! It seems to go in our Victorian house. I would say our decor is boho/Victorian! We've got a slouchy dark brown corner sofa with scatter back cushions in a sort of chenille fabric. It goes well with the dark blue paint and wood and creates more seating whilst taking up less space.

ShirleyPhallus · 23/06/2022 12:41

I don’t think that corner sofas are outdated at all, but I do think the fabric you choose is.

I think those squishy dark brown / black leather sofas look dated, as to the corduroy ones, the ones that come with the round bit at the end, anything silver and / or chenille. Avoid all.

Thecontroller · 23/06/2022 12:42

We have a corner sofa. No idea if it's fashionable or not. It's comfortable, fits the space in our living room and has enough room for us all on it. DH and I also liked the colour and fabric.

Unless you regularly have Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen round for a cuppa, why do you even care what's fashionable?

Mercurial123 · 23/06/2022 12:43

They've been around for years, it's not something new. They are still popular. You're an adult buy what you like.

TheThreadisMildlyAmusing · 23/06/2022 12:59

I would love a corner sofa as they look so comfortable and practical, but sadly they won't fit in my sitting room.

BronzeSilverGold13 · 23/06/2022 13:00

It depends on the room but I love a corner sofa just wish they weren't so expensive as I refuse to buy a new sofa with a 1 year old running around but I currently have a large 2 seater and a chair which I won't get rid of until my boy is older

nokitchen · 23/06/2022 13:09

We've just ordered one.

HairyDad · 23/06/2022 13:22

The shape of a sofa should not be about looks, but about making the best use of the space and being comfortable. I have an L shaped one which I bought new, it's great for stretching your legs out and I often fall asleep on it.
If in doubt, try and get a free or cheap used one, try it out, if you like the shape then buy a better one

BrieAndChilli · 23/06/2022 13:26

my parents had a corner sofa in the 80s!! a cream leather one.
My mum then had one in the late 90s 0 a flowery fabric that I remember her getting scotchguarded.
My Grandparents also in the 80s had a god awful mud brown one

We now have a beige fabric corner sofa. Suits our space better than seperate ones. The people we bought the house off also had a corner sofa in the same space.

Yodaisawally · 23/06/2022 13:28

Depends on room layout. We had one in brown leather in our first flat with one reception room. It helped separate clothe space and was so bloody comfy.

In our house now it wouldn't work.

I'd go for the option that gets you the most seating in the space.

User3568975431146 · 23/06/2022 13:34

We're on our third corner suite and it's never crossed my mind whether it is on trend or not. They've all been vomfy, given us enough seating and fitted the room. 🤷‍♀️

JuneJubilee · 23/06/2022 13:35

Unless you buy something to perch on in an uncomfortable fashion, it won't be 'on trend'

just buy something you like that's comfortable!!

my issue is not knowing where to buy one that will last. I might end up 'cheep & cheerful' (like ikea) as I'm concerned about spending £££ only for it to not last.

years ago you it was much easier to know if you bought x brand it'll last.

Frazzled2207 · 23/06/2022 13:41

we're looking at them now and it hadn't occured to me that they were a 'fad'. We want something that we can all sit together on - currently we can just about but the children are growing. With the size of the lounge a corner one is the only option.
I do think though that it requires at least one additional 'chair'. Because i think some visitors will not be happy to share the sofa with others. But DH disagrees on that.

Cherryblossoms85 · 23/06/2022 13:44

We have a long corner sofa, have had for 10 years. Our living room is rectangular, not sure what else I would get. Don't really care about fashion, it fits. We also have armchairs separately that don't match.

Cherryblossoms85 · 23/06/2022 13:45

@JuneJubilee Our Next one is still going strong...

Badger1970 · 23/06/2022 13:50

We make corner sofas at work - you can have on legs or on the floor, and it really depends on your room space. I personally think that it can be awkward when you've got visitors as it's hard to sit in the corner space and you're all very close, but for families they're ideal. We've got a 2.5 seater, 3 seater and 2 chairs with an oversized ottoman which covers all options when we've got a house full.

Thanks. That's good to know. How long have you had it? Gruffalo or tinker bell use?

declutteringmymind · 23/06/2022 18:16

I don't care how they look. I love ours. Not quite a corner but has a corner chaise whic is absolute bliss. I'd love a chesterfield but
Can't nap properly or adjust the headrest on those.

Go for what you need, not what looks good
