No. 1

I prefer the composition of 1 apart from the fact that he is just floating in space. I think 2 is slightly better technically. I don't think I would have been very happy to pay £70 for 2 as the composition is awful. I would have been very grateful and impressed with your gift of a lovely painting though.

There isn't much in it though.

Sorry I hadn't read the full thread when I replied. Yours is so much nicer @dingit

It’s 2 for me 🥰

Mallysmomma · 22/06/2022 14:58

I just saw that you painted it. I chose 2 because it was (ever so slightly) a better pose in my opinion however if someone had painted me a picture of one of my cats to the high standard of Number 1 I would be ecstatic so not sure why your “friend” opted to get a “ professional” portrait as they both look professional to me. You’re a great artist; try not to let it dampen your enthusiasm at all. Art is after all very subjective. Xx

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/06/2022 15:03

I chose 2 as it looks more finished. 1 looks like it's floating as needs some shading and something not quite right with the eye. Saying that if my friend gave it to me I'd be really pleased!

I don't actually visit her house often and she's just moved. So she could have shoved it under the bed and I would have been none the wiser. It was the fact she made a point of telling me about the professional one.
Oh well lesson learned 🙄

@GarrettAMorgan 's response would perhaps be fine if the OP had entered the paintings in a competition or exhibition of some kind. As this was not the case, it comes across as both pretentious and overblown, unnecessary and unkind. As is their second response.
It's the kind of written criticism which gives enormous pleasure to the writer but rather less to anyone else.
