To hate head massages at the hairdressers?

Yesterday the hairdresser washed my hair and then gave me a long head and even the front of my head an intense massage. It felt weirdly intimate and inappropriate even though I know others love it. Aibu to dislike this and wish they would stick to cutting hair ?

I don't like it either so I ask them to skip it as I have a bad neck and don't want to lean back longer than necessary.

milkyaqua · 22/06/2022 03:40

A desultory head massage from a disaffected young woman who doesn't bother to emulsify or wash the dye out properly - what's not to like!

DangerouslyBored · 22/06/2022 04:09

Some hairdressers are amazing at head massage. I suffer with migraines so my head is often v right, a head massage can do wonders to release the pressure. However, if the hairdresser has big, sweaty hands and is just going through the motions, it’s a horrible experience. Just don’t bother

You

Blowyourowntrumpet · 22/06/2022 05:00

I hate them. My hairdresser always asks and I always say no

APJ1 · 22/06/2022 05:11

Hate it, makes me feel nauseous.

Same.

Marvellousmadness · 22/06/2022 05:50

This is on you. You could have said no
Or stop...

😅

Bednobsbroomsticks · 22/06/2022 06:33

Best bit I think and they put me in a massage chair while doing it. Tis lovely

Pushkinia · 22/06/2022 06:51

I hate head massages and my hairdresser knows not to even ask now. Neck problems mean getting my head back into the basin is painful enough, I don’t want to be stuck there any longer than necessary. I hate the feeling of fingers digging into my scalp!

WhiskerPatrol · 22/06/2022 07:00

I hate it. I feel like it's matting my hair, even though it doesn't. And I find the basin so uncomfortable and just want to be away from it as quickly as possible!

ellieboolou · 22/06/2022 07:02

Best bit, I was a hairdresser and would always ask if people wanted a massage, only 2-3 people ever said no.

Butchyrestingface · 22/06/2022 07:02

I love it, but appreciate that some don't.

What a pity you don't have a tongue in your head to ask her not to do it though. Sad

WibblyWobblyBoat · 22/06/2022 07:03

@Bednobsbroomsticks - yes! Massage chair here too! It’s one of the main reasons I go to the salon (plus the hairdresser is fab!).

rookiemere · 22/06/2022 07:04

I hate it and ask them not to do it. Thankfully I think it's written down on my record now. I asked an ex hairdresser and she said it was about 50/50 for those who didn't want it versus those who did.

PinkButtercups · 22/06/2022 07:17

I don't like it either. I don't like being touched at the best of the times, so a complete stranger running their fingers through my hair. No thanks.

Mxflamingnoravera · 22/06/2022 07:24

Going to the hairdressers is as enjoyable as going to the dentist to me. I love my hairdresser but don't like having my hair washed, head massaged or sitting in front of a mirror. YANBU

southlondoner02 · 22/06/2022 07:43

Going to the hairdressers is worse than the dentist for me. Hate it. Haven't been to one who do ones head massages for a few years luckily. When they've done it in the past I don't even class it as a massage more someone jabbing their fingers into my skull. And I say that as someone who loves a proper massage. I wouldn't mind if they asked but they just start doing it.

MarthanotMarfa · 22/06/2022 07:48

I always say no massages please just wash and they’ve always looked pleased!

RockinHorseShit · 22/06/2022 07:58

YADNBU.!

I friggin hate this with a passion, if I want a head massage, I'll go for one with a professional who knows what they are doing, so get your grubby mitts off my head & cut my bloody hair as that's what I'm here for

chiffchaffchiff · 22/06/2022 08:02

Depends on the person doing it. The receptionist at my hairdressers is apparently trained in Indian head massage. I hate it when she's asked to do the massage bit. It feels like she's jabbing her fingers into my skull. Not relaxing at all.

takingmytimeonmyride · 22/06/2022 10:03

I'm autistic, and I hate people touching me. I find going to the hairdressers really awkward as I never know what to say, then worry they think I'm a miserable cow.

But I absolutely love the head massages! I find them really relaxing. I had my hair done recently, that was the best part.

UndertheCedartree · 22/06/2022 10:27

I don't even really like them touching my head/hair atall but have to put up with it if I want a cut. But the head massage I politely decline. I think they should ask if you want it.

Hadalifeonce · 22/06/2022 10:30

I hate it if they ask if I want one, I say no. If they start, I ask them to stop.
