AIBU to think of replacing all synthetic duvets with wool duvet?

Return2thebasic · 18/06/2022 21:22

I just paid £20 to the laundrette for cleaning a synthetic single duvet - 4.5 tog. (I do think they ripped me off to certain level because the duvet has a label "Made in France". And they don't have a fixed price list, all by feelings.)

Our household washing machine wouldn't be able to handle washing duvets. And if wool duvets just need sunbathing now and then but don't need to get washed, why shouldn't I replace all duvets with woolly ones? A Forgary single all-season one on sale costs £52 and I don't need to pay an outrageous amount of money to clean it.

Can someone provide good reasons against this idea please?

Wool duvets are great. I found synthetic ones got very sweaty. I have a lightweight wool one for winter with a blanket and coverlet on top and then switch to a cotton duvet for summer. I also have wool pillows.

Hankunamatata · 18/06/2022 22:27

I wash my wool duvet at laundette

What has it being made in France to do with anything?

I have no idea. Just guess! Last time when I did for the same size of a different brand, it cost me £13! That was just last month! £7 price increase? Maybe they think a French duvet is on the posh side so charge me more assuming I have more money??? 😂

@AllTheMonacles no. Wool is one of the best at regulating temperature. So in winter it’s warm and in summer it’s cool.

Hankunamatata · 18/06/2022 22:31

My forgary wool duvet came with washing instructions.

Surely you just wash a 4.5 tog single synthetic duvet in your washing machine at home?

I don't understand the issue. It probably didn't even cost £20 to buy so in the extremely unlikely event that it is damaged beyond further use, its still cheaper to replace than pay so much for it to be dry cleaned.

My 7KG machine machine doesn't have the capacity - to wash properly, the drum has to be only 3/4 full I remember? It's too big for it!

I can get a single duvet in our 7kg machine! Don't forget there is a lot of air in a duvet, once wet it takes up a lot less room.

I wouldn't get one because I would be worried about moths. I still haven't got over a bunch of them making a meal of my beautiful cashmere coat.

If you use it all the time, moth shouldn't make home of it? When I don't use spare duvets, I vacuum them. That should provide good protection?

@Hankunamatata , have you tried to wash it? How did it turn out? I newly bought the Fogarty one and love it! I stopped having cold feet every night when I just have the duvet on! A huge bonus!

@AllTheMonacles no. Wool is one of the best at regulating temperature. So in winter it’s warm and in summer it’s cool.

I've read that but my sheepskin slippers which keep my feet beautiful toasty in cold weather also make them horrendously hot and sweaty in warm weather.
Are the duvets different because the wool isn't touching the skin?

@inappropriateraspberry 😫😫 I didn't try to fit it in honestly...Just assumed it wouldn't fit!

I have one from woolroom and love it. My dad got it me for Christmas and after doing the dad thing of inspecting it, he went and bought himself one Grin

Mostess · 18/06/2022 22:44

My wool duvet is from Devon Duvets at John Lewis and I absolutely adore it. I was looking for a cruelty-free natural one. It's wonderful - always warm enough in winter, and I use it for nine months of the year.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 18/06/2022 22:45

@AllTheMonacles I am not an expert - but wool in slippers is much thinner than a duvet, so less fluffy ness and airy ‘holes’ for ventilation in summer, conversely the duvet airyness of the wool traps warm air in the winter and let’s the heat escape in the summer. Also slippers have that hard man made sole which will help in keeping sweaty feet - sweaty.
I suspect the Baavet website explains it better than I have!!

Lemonlemon88 · 18/06/2022 22:45

We love our wool duvets here, we have clip together ones so you have a summer and winter weight.

Skinterior · 18/06/2022 22:46

Love our wool duvets - the pillows and the toppers too

Had it for years. Survived all the babies and various accidents (my babies are all nearly teens). I can squeeze superking into my 12kg washing machine but doesnt do a great job so just tend to wash it at launderette every 6 months, usually a boil wash as I have allergies and it's still going strong.

I got a super lightweight from Baavet a few weeks ago. Very happy so far, it's feels comfortable and good quality. I'm hoping it gives us years of use.

I'm now pondering changing to wool pillows but I'm extremely fussy about pillows so worry about making an expensive mistake.

Gentleness · 18/06/2022 23:41

I'm contemplating doing the same thing, but can't decide where to shop. Everyone loves the duvets they have so I guess I can't go wrong, but it's quite an investment for us so I'm nervous.

Has anyone been able to make a direct comparison between makes? Woolroom vs Baavet vs Devon?

Return2thebasic · 19/06/2022 08:57

@Gentleness , maybe start another new post for that topic to get traffic? I'm interested to know too. I've got two Fogarty from Dunelm. One for DH and one for myself. DH didn't feel much difference, but I love mine. It's on sale at the moment, a single for £52.

@Gentleness my Devon Duvet is much less rustly than others I've encountered. It also never smelled 'sheepy' which I've read can be a problem with some other brands to begin with. Excellent customer service too.

Thanks for the explanation. I wish I could try one out.

Mine was woolroom as it was the cheapest at the time. Completely happy with it!

anybloodyname · 20/06/2022 07:56

@Return2thebasic the single will most likely fit in machine ( for next time )

Anything bigger - I take to launderette and put in a big machine and wash while I read my kindle with a coffee - cost me £4 last time

Take it home wet in whatever bag is handy and spread it out on some chairs to dry in sun

Needs a bit of coordination for weather of course but if can be machine washed then that's most economical way
